Primary 6 Student Stalling in English Writing

Block 1 — System Boundary

System: One Primary 6 student preparing for PSLE English Composition Writing over a 12-week window.
Included: vocabulary depth, sentence construction, planning process, feedback loop, motivation, and home study routine.
Excluded: other subjects and long-term life outcomes beyond the 12-week scope.

Block 2 — D/L/T Score Table (0–5)

AxisScoreJustification
D (Depth)2/5Limited vocabulary variety and weak sentence control; ideas repeat.
L (Load)2/5Performance drops under timed writing and feedback pressure.
T (Transfer)1/5Skills learned in drills do not transfer into new prompts or exam conditions.

Block 3 — Binding Constraints (e)

  1. Time constraint: only 12 weeks with limited daily practice.
  2. Attention constraint: inconsistent home routine reduces repetition frequency.

Block 4 — Trajectory Physics (t)

Rise: Student improves in isolated drills and memorised phrases.
Stall: Improvement stops when full compositions are required.
Regression: Under timed practice, structure weakens and language simplifies.
Lock-in risk: Repeating drills without transfer hardens the plateau and anxiety becomes stable.

Block 5 — Failure Signature

Primary failure: T-FAIL (Transfer failed first).
Reason: The student can perform with guidance but cannot reproduce skills independently under new prompts and time pressure.

Block 6 — Recovery Mode

Selected: Transfer Repair.

Block 7 — Retest Probe

Probe A – Transfer under novelty
Each week, write 1 full composition on a brand-new prompt in 35 minutes.
Pass: Complete structure (intro/body/ending) + ≥6 targeted vocabulary/phrases used correctly.

Probe B – Transfer under pressure
Two timed practices per week with a 5-minute planning limit.
Pass: Visible outline + coherent content without collapsing into short, repetitive sentences.

Probe C – Transfer across themes
Rotate themes weekly (kindness, perseverance, conflict, surprise).
Pass: Apply “show, don’t tell” techniques consistently across all themes.

Re-run rule:
If probes pass for 3 consecutive weeks, raise the improved axis by +1 and re-execute the kernel.
