How Education Works · Opening the door is different from merely putting the lesson online

Open education begins with permission: who may access, use, adapt, redistribute and contribute to learning materials?

A teacher finds an excellent diagram online but cannot tell whether it may be modified. A learner discovers a free course but receives no feedback or recognised credential. A school publishes notes openly, yet the files are inaccessible on a phone and impossible for a screen reader to navigate. “Free” has opened one door while leaving several others closed.

Open education examines those doors systematically. It connects access, rights, technology, pedagogy, quality, accessibility and participation so learning can travel beyond the original classroom without losing meaning or responsibility.

Scope: this article explains open education conceptually. It is not legal advice about copyright or licensing. Teachers and institutions should verify the exact licence, permissions and local requirements for any resource they intend to reuse or adapt.

1. Open education is about access plus legitimate reuse

A publicly viewable resource is not automatically open in the educational sense. Open education usually involves permissions that allow some combination of retention, reuse, revision, remixing and redistribution.

The difference matters because education often improves materials through adaptation. A teacher may need to translate an explanation, replace a culturally unfamiliar example or combine several resources.

Open permissions can make that work possible legally and transparently.

2. Open education is not the same as distance education

Distance & Online Education concerns the instructional design problem created when learner and teacher are separated by place or time.

An online course can be closed behind a login and licence. An open textbook can be used in a face-to-face classroom.

Delivery mode and openness are different dimensions.

3. Access has several layers

A resource can be financially free and still difficult to access because of bandwidth, language, disability, device requirements or registration barriers.

Open education should therefore ask who can actually use the resource, not only whether a price is charged.

Access is experienced at the end of the chain.

4. Open education can widen opportunity without guaranteeing learning

Publishing a course openly increases potential access. It does not ensure learners possess prerequisites, time, motivation, feedback or support.

A high-quality open education system distinguishes content access from supported learning.

5. Open educational resources are learning materials with open permissions

Open educational resources can include textbooks, lesson plans, videos, simulations, assessments, images and complete courses.

The educational value comes from both content and permission. A resource may be adapted for local context, translated, shortened or combined with another resource where its licence allows.

The licence should travel with the resource so later users understand their permissions and obligations.

6. Reuse should begin with source quality

An open licence does not guarantee accuracy. Anyone adapting a resource remains responsible for checking the educational content.

Verify factual claims, examples, answer keys and suitability for the intended learners before reuse.

Openness changes permissions, not truth standards.

7. Adaptation should preserve the learning mechanism

Replacing a local example can improve relevance. Removing a difficult reasoning step to make a worksheet shorter can accidentally change the learning objective.

Before adapting, identify the resource’s core educational job.

8. Remixing creates a new responsibility chain

When several open resources are combined, their licences and attribution requirements may differ.

The creator should preserve source information and ensure the combined work respects compatible permissions.

A visually seamless resource can still have a broken rights chain.

9. Licensing tells users what they may do

Open licences can permit copying, adaptation and sharing under specified conditions. Some require attribution; some impose share-alike conditions; some restrict commercial use or derivative works.

Teachers should read the exact licence rather than infer permission from a logo or label alone.

10. Attribution is educational infrastructure

Attribution acknowledges the source and helps future users locate the original work, licence and context.

A useful attribution preserves title, creator, source and licence where appropriate.

This is not merely etiquette; it maintains the evidence and permission trail.

11. Public domain and openly licensed are not identical

A public-domain work may be free of copyright restrictions in the relevant jurisdiction or under specific legal conditions. An openly licensed work remains copyrighted but is made available under stated permissions.

Users should not treat these categories as interchangeable.

Where legal certainty matters, use qualified guidance.

12. Open access research and open education overlap but are distinct

Open access makes scholarly research more accessible. Open education concerns teaching and learning resources and practices.

An open research article may inform an open lesson, but the article itself may not be designed pedagogically for novice learners.

Access to knowledge and instructional transformation are different jobs.

13. Open pedagogy changes the learner’s role

In some open-education approaches, learners do not only consume resources. They create, revise, annotate or contribute material that can help future learners.

This can produce authentic audience and responsibility.

It also raises questions about consent, privacy, rights and whether students should be required to publish their work publicly.

14. Public contribution should be optional where exposure is not the learning target

A learner may be able to demonstrate knowledge without attaching their identity permanently to the public internet.

Provide private or pseudonymous alternatives where appropriate and consistent with the educational goal.

Openness should not require unnecessary personal exposure.

15. Learner-created resources need review before reuse

A student-produced explanation can contain errors. If it becomes a resource for later learners, someone must review accuracy and rights.

Creation can be educational even when the artifact is never published.

The decision to release should follow quality and consent, not enthusiasm alone.

16. Open assignments can solve real information gaps

Instead of writing an essay read only by the teacher, students might create a reviewed glossary, annotated example set or local guide for future classes.

The assignment should still have clear learning objectives. Public usefulness should not replace disciplinary accuracy.

The artifact becomes a by-product of learning, not proof that every public project is inherently better.

17. MOOCs opened scale but exposed support problems

Massive open online courses demonstrate that learning materials can reach very large audiences.

Scale also makes individual feedback, identity verification, peer quality and persistence harder to manage.

The educational lesson is that access and instructional support scale differently.

18. Repositories need metadata to remain usable

A collection of thousands of resources becomes difficult to navigate if users cannot identify subject, level, language, licence, format and update date.

Metadata is part of open infrastructure because it helps the right learner or teacher locate an appropriate resource.

Openness without discoverability can remain practically closed.

19. Quality assurance matters more when resources travel far from the creator

The original author may not be present to correct a misunderstanding. Open materials need clear versioning, source notes and correction paths.

Users should be able to identify when the resource was updated and where to report an error.

20. Version control protects adaptation chains

An adapted resource can diverge substantially from its source. Users should know which version they are using and what changed.

Keep a brief change note: translated examples, updated figures, removed sections or revised answer key.

This makes correction and comparison easier later.

21. Accessibility is part of openness

A scanned image-only PDF may be free to download but inaccessible to some users and difficult to adapt.

Use structured text, meaningful headings, suitable alternatives for images and formats that can be accessed across common devices where possible.

Open education should reduce unnecessary access barriers rather than merely remove price.

22. Language is an access layer

Open licences can make translation legally easier where derivatives are permitted, but accurate translation still requires language and subject competence.

Translation should preserve the educational relationship, not merely replace words.

23. Open resources need local context

A resource produced for another curriculum may use unfamiliar notation, law, units or cultural examples.

Adaptation should identify which parts are universal enough to retain and which require localisation.

The source’s authority does not automatically transfer to a different context.

24. Worked case: adapting an open percentage lesson

Invented case: a teacher finds an openly licensed lesson explaining percentage change through prices in a foreign currency and examples tied to an unfamiliar school system.

The mathematical mechanism is useful, but some context creates unnecessary cognitive load.

The teacher first verifies the licence permits adaptation and records the original source.

25. Preserve the mathematical mechanism while localising the surface

The teacher replaces currency examples with unit-free quantities and rewrites the school example using a generic classroom context.

The key comparison—change divided by the original quantity—remains intact.

The adapted lesson is then checked against the local curriculum rather than assumed to fit because the source was reputable.

26. Add local scaffolding without locking the resource closed again

The teacher adds an explanatory note and an accessible text version. Where permitted, the improved version is shared under compatible terms.

Future users can see what changed and decide whether those changes fit their own learners.

The open resource becomes part of a visible improvement chain.

27. Evaluate the adapted resource as teaching, not only as publishing

After classroom use, inspect whether learners understand the reference quantity more clearly and whether the new examples introduced any unintended confusion.

Open adaptation should return to learning evidence.

A beautifully documented resource can still be educationally weak.

28. Open does not mean costless

Creating, hosting, reviewing, translating, updating and supporting open resources requires labour and infrastructure.

Open programmes need sustainable models: institutional funding, grants, community contribution, paid services around open content or another legitimate structure.

The resource can be free to the learner while still having real production costs.

29. Stewardship matters after publication

Who fixes broken links, outdated statistics and incorrect answer keys? Who decides when a resource is archived?

Open resources need ownership even when use is widely distributed.

A clearly retired resource is safer than an abandoned one that still looks current.

30. A practical open education audit

  1. What learning resource or opportunity is being opened?
  2. What may users access, retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute?
  3. Is the licence clear and suitable for the intended use?
  4. Is the content accurate and educationally appropriate?
  5. Which local adaptations are needed?
  6. Can users with different devices, languages or access needs actually use it?
  7. Is attribution and version history preserved?
  8. Who owns corrections and updates?
  9. What does the open resource provide, and what learner support remains missing?
  10. How will the open system remain sustainable?

31. The final goal is learning that can travel responsibly

Open education expands the circulation of educational capability. A good explanation can move beyond one classroom, be adapted to another language or context and return improved.

The strongest open system does not confuse access with completion or permission with quality. It keeps the educational purpose, rights chain and correction path visible as knowledge moves.
