The Root Reason

You are practicing with guidance, so your brain never trains independent retrieval.

What’s actually happening

  • The tutor hints before you struggle
  • You follow steps but don’t own the “why”
  • You recognise the method but can’t start it alone
  • You haven’t done “no-notes, no-hints” retests

Phase rule

  • Phase 1: can do with help
  • Phase 2: can do alone consistently

Fix (the independence protocol)

  1. Last question = no hints. Every session ends with one question you do alone.
  2. Teach-back. You explain the method back in simple words.
  3. 24-hour retest. Next day, do one similar question without notes.
  4. Error log. Track the exact step you got stuck on.
