A child is P1 in Primary English when they can:

answer comprehension questions with hints,
write when given strong prompts or templates,
improve when you “explain it again,”

but cannot reliably:

handle unseen passages independently,

write clearly under exam constraints.

Your job at P1 is to convert guided performance into independent stability.

Step 1 — Confirm the P1 signature

Your child is likely P1 if you see these patterns:

Comprehension

understands after you explain
can find answers when told where to look

chooses wrong options because they guessed, not because they didn’t read

Writing

can write using a model essay or template

writing is repetitive, shallow, or off-topic when prompt changes

Behaviour

depends on prompting
avoids reading
confidence rises and falls sharply based on the last test

This is a good sign: the engine exists.
Now you must remove scaffolding safely.

Step 2 — Understand what keeps a P1 child stuck

P1 persists because one or more pockets are still unstable:

1) Vocabulary is not strong enough for unseen texts

They can handle familiar topics, but unseen passages slow them down.

2) Evidence discipline is weak

They answer from guessing or “what feels right” instead of pointing to text evidence.

3) Inference is unstable

They can find facts, but struggle to infer motives, feelings, reasons, or implied meaning.

4) Sentence clarity under load is weak

Grammar and sentence control collapse when rushed.

5) Writing architecture is not internalised

They can copy a structure but cannot build one independently.
