Delay tolerance (can attention hold without instant reward)

Healthy signal
You can sustain focus through the full work block
Distractions are noticed early and corrected
Re-entry after interruption is fast
Tasks complete with fewer resets
Reading and writing feel smoother and less fragmented
Danger signal
Frequent tab switching and task hopping
Starting is hard and restarting is constant
You lose track of what you were doing
You avoid deep tasks and chase short stimuli
Work expands without progress
Thresholds
Level 1: Stable attention
Focus holds, distractions are rare, re-entry is fast
Level 2: Mild instability
Some drift, but the system can self-correct
Level 3: Unstable attention
Frequent resets, performance becomes inconsistent
Level 4: Fragmented attention
Deep work collapses, shallow loops dominate
Level 5: Attention breakdown
Cannot sustain focus, learning and execution degrade rapidly
Minimum Viable Test
Pick one task (reading, writing, math practice).
Run 3 blocks per week:
15 minutes, no interruptions
Track how many times you restart
If restart count does not decline over 2–4 weeks, attention stability is not improving.
