The human sciences study the same real world at different zoom levels. Psychology focuses on individuals. Sociology and economics focus on institutions and populations. History and political science focus on civilisations over time. These fields often disagree because each one measures different variables, uses different units, and tells different stories. Civilisation OS does not try to replace them. It adds an interface layer: a shared survivability control-language called Phase.
Phase is an interface layer, not a competing discipline
Phase is a scale-invariant gauge of stability under load. It translates many observations across fields into a common set of control variables:
- Load: the continuous demand placed on a system
- HR-BW: Human Regeneration Bandwidth (how fast usable capacity can be produced and repaired)
- PSB: Phase Survivability Band (the safe operating region)
- PDP / PFP: bottom and top cliffs (dissolution vs fracture)
- AHD / LBD: the two silent drifts (hollowing vs brittleness)
- AFT: Arrow Forcing Terms (external shocks)
- COEE: irreversible organ/pipeline amputation events

Psychology (micro): Phase as personal survivability physics

History and political science (macro): Phase as civilisation survivability physics
History and political science observe rise and fall, legitimacy crises, war, revolutions, and collapse. Phase translates these into structural survivability dynamics:
- “decline” becomes AHD + LBD drift
- collapse becomes PFP crossing
- wars, climate, disease are AFT
- irreversible loss of core institutions is Z2 COEE
- stability is living inside PSB with slack and redundancy
This turns narratives into a stability model with early warning signals.
Why this unifies
When the same failure shapes repeat across scales—burnout in people, breakdown in institutions, collapse in civilisations—it is a strong sign of a shared underlying mechanism. Phase provides a single stability language to talk across disciplines without flattening them into one story. Each field keeps its methods and insights; Phase supplies the control coordinates to compare, instrument, and act.
What Phase enables
Once translated into Phase variables, a system becomes engineerable:
- Diagnostics: where are we in PSB?
- Early warning: are AHD or LBD drifting?
- Recovery design: truncation and stitching before COEE
