Did you know that practical learning and a separate practical examination are different things? The 2027 SEC G1 Science K123 scheme has two papers and no separate hands-on practical paper. It still includes experimental skills and investigations, so laboratory learning remains meaningful.
Paper 1 is a 75-minute e-examination and Paper 2 is a one-hour short-answer and structured paper; each contributes 50%. Experimental reasoning can be assessed through questions in these papers. Ask the teacher which investigation skills the learner should practise rather than removing them from revision.

Scope: 2027 SEC school-candidate syllabus, checked 10 October 2026. Confirm the registered subject, school offer and examination year. Our independent practice examples are not official specimen questions or placement tests.

This answer concerns 2027 SEC G1 Science, K123. Confirm the registered code; a paper arrangement from a different Science course should not determine the student’s preparation.
For the wider choices, read the G1/G2/G3 and combined-versus-separate Science comparison. This guide focuses on the practical-examination question.
Write down the code, current topic and teacher’s recommended practice materials. When a worksheet says “practical”, ask whether it teaches an investigation skill, rehearses a school assessment or matches a national paper.
For a child entering Secondary 1 in 2027, follow the school’s current teaching programme. The examination-year document here applies to the 2027 SEC cohort, not automatically to a later graduating cohort.
| K123 paper | Duration and raw marks | Subject weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: e-examination | 1h 15min; 50 marks | 50% |
| Paper 2: short-answer and structured questions | 1h; 50 marks | 50% |
All questions are compulsory. Paper 1 can use video, animation or interactive stimuli. Paper 2 includes an eight-to-twelve-mark data-response question. Experimental skills can be examined through tasks involving observations, apparatus, data or procedures.
Source: the official K123 syllabus. It also calls for appropriate practical work in learning the subject. The absence of a separate national practical paper does not remove those learning objectives.
Our suggested revision approach is to connect a classroom investigation with a small written reasoning task. Ask what was measured, what the results support and what could improve the method.
Look at the exact place where the answer breaks down. Does the learner understand the science idea, read the table accurately or explain why the evidence matters? These are different possible difficulties.
Ask the student to point to the data used in their conclusion. If they cannot locate it, begin with reading the representation. If they can locate it but cannot explain it, practise the connection between evidence and claim.
This is our suggested learning check, not a placement test or grade prediction. Bring a recent school task to the teacher and agree on the next small skill to improve.
Use our invented data exercise: a fictional learner times the same model journey three times, obtaining 8, 9 and 8 seconds. No home experiment is required. What do those recorded values allow us to say?
The readings are close but not identical. Ask what information is missing before explaining the variation. The numbers alone do not identify a particular cause or prove that the method was accurate.
Propose one question to investigate on paper, such as whether the start and finish points were kept the same. Explain why that detail would matter. Discuss the question using concepts already taught.
Then compare the first conclusion with a revised one. The aim is a better-supported answer. Perform actual practical work only within the teacher’s approved arrangements and instructions.
Keep a taught concept, a data-reading task and an investigation explanation in the plan. A short appointment with a clear aim helps the learner see which skill they are using.
After feedback, revise one answer and try a fresh table or diagram. Ask whether the student can identify the relevant information without relying on the shape of a familiar worksheet.
Use the school’s approved e-exam practice arrangements. Attend to the scientific meaning of an interactive prompt as well as how to enter the answer. Do not assume that ordinary screen use gives the same experience.
