How Does Secondary School German Work? | SEC G3 K371 Papers and Skills

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that learning German for SEC involves both understanding messages and creating them independently? G3 German is K371 for 2027 school candidates. A useful starting point is the student’s actual course and recent work, rather than a broad judgement about whether German is difficult.

Writing and reading each contribute 33%; listening and oral each contribute 17%. Confirm the programme offer and timetable, then discuss where the learner needs support across those skills. The SEAB listing identifies an examination syllabus; entry and teaching arrangements need their own confirmation.

Need the examination details? Jump to the assessment table. Considering the course? Read the fit questions. Looking for a manageable next step? Try the study routine, or open the all-subject directory.

Scope: 2027 SEC school-candidate syllabus, checked 10 October 2026. Confirm the registered subject, programme offer and examination year. Our practice examples are independent suggestions, not official specimen tasks or selection tests.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5

Which German course is the learner preparing for?

Back to contents

Write G3 German, K371 and the examination year in the learning folder. Ask the teacher to identify the textbook and current practice resources that match it.

Our suggested folder separates useful language, independent attempts and feedback. Keep a word or expression beside an example of its use so the record supports communication rather than becoming an isolated list.

Ask the school or provider about eligibility, lesson arrangements and travel before planning the week. Use the learner’s actual programme offer when discussing a possible commitment.

A Secondary 1 entrant in 2027 should follow the programme’s current teaching sequence. The 2027 SEC specification concerns that examination cohort, not automatically the entrant’s later graduating year.

CHAPTER 2 OF 5

How are writing, reading, listening and oral assessed?

2027 SEC G3 German assessment.

Both writing questions must be attempted: a six-picture story and one directed-writing task selected from two options. Each response is 140–150 words. Oral has a topic presentation/conversation and a general conversation. Dictionaries are not permitted in this assessment.

Source: the official K371 syllabus. Use the full instructions for task choices and response requirements before timed practice.

Our suggested preparation asks two questions about an answer: did it communicate the intended information, and what needs correction? Both questions give feedback a concrete purpose.

CHAPTER 3 OF 5

What should we look at beyond a grammar score?

Back to contents

Ask the learner to describe a recent task they completed independently. What were they trying to communicate, and which part required help? Listen for a specific difficulty rather than a label.

A child may read a familiar sentence successfully but struggle to build a new one. Bring examples from more than one skill to the teacher so the next step reflects the actual pattern.

Discuss what a realistic week can accommodate. Our suggested questions are not a programme-selection test. Interest, the school’s criteria and the practical schedule all belong in the decision.

A parent does not need to correct German grammar to provide useful support. Help the learner find the assigned resource, keep the appointment and bring the unresolved question back to the teacher.

CHAPTER 4 OF 5

How can one detail change a sentence’s purpose?

Back to contents

Try our independent exercise using a fictional weekend plan. Ask the learner to communicate one activity using language already taught, then change the intended time from a future plan to a past experience.

Before revising the German, state in plain language what changed in the meaning. This makes the language task purposeful rather than a sequence of substitutions without understanding.

Ask the teacher to check the revised response and identify one useful correction. Keep the early and revised versions together so the learner can explain what the change accomplished.

Use a fresh activity next. Can the learner apply the feedback without copying the whole earlier sentence? This is our learning suggestion, not an official writing prompt or prescribed grammar test.

CHAPTER 5 OF 5

What can steady German practice look like?

Back to contents

Choose a short listening task, a reading task and a small spoken or written response. Give each a clear aim instead of asking the student to “do more German”.

Keep revision focused on one recurring difficulty at a time. Retrieve an expression, use it with a new detail and ask whether the result still communicates clearly.

After feedback, attempt a fresh task. A familiar correct answer shows something useful, but adapting to a different prompt helps reveal which part the learner can manage independently.

For examination rules, open the syllabus-reading guide. Use teacher-approved materials and arrangements when practising the exact paper formats.
