How to decide which Mathematics Tutor to go to? | China

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Searching for a mathematics tutor in China raises two separate questions that should never be collapsed into one: does the learner actually need extra mathematics support, and is the proposed tutoring lawful for that learner’s age and location? A fast promises-and-testimonials search cannot answer either one.

Families comparing math tutoring in China, maths tuition in Beijing, a Shanghai mathematics tutor, online maths lessons or Gaokao maths preparation should begin with the student’s real school textbook, the province or examination route, and the form of support the school permits. A strong tutor understands mathematical progression; a responsible provider also understands the rules for school-subject tutoring.

China’s national compulsory-education Mathematics curriculum is a serious framework for developing mathematical concepts and reasoning. But a country is not one classroom: municipal and provincial practice, textbooks, school schedules and later entrance-exam arrangements can differ. The right lesson is the one that fits the actual learner, not the one with the most impressive chapter title.

First, understand the rules before choosing a provider

Mathematics is classified as a school-subject (学科类) area in China’s regulation of extracurricular training during compulsory education. The Double Reduction (双减) policy restricts after-school academic tutoring, and the Ministry of Education has continued to operate regulation and monitoring mechanisms. Do not assume a commercial provider, an online offer or a rebranded ‘thinking skills’ class is compliant because its advertisement looks ordinary.

Families should check current local education-department requirements, the provider’s registration and permitted course type, timetable, teacher credentials, fee contract and refund arrangements. The national off-campus education training supervision and service platform provides a route for checking institutions and safeguarding parents’ rights. What is permissible for an upper-secondary candidate may differ from what is permitted for a younger compulsory-school pupil. This is practical consumer guidance, not an assertion that every form of private academic tuition is available.

When support is not lawful or appropriate, ask the school about classroom clarification, teacher feedback, authorised after-school services and independent practice within the applicable rules. A responsible decision includes the possibility of not buying tuition.

The maths question underneath the exam question

Imagine a learner who can solve a routine linear equation but hesitates when a word problem asks for a relationship. The issue may not be arithmetic speed. It may be translation: turning quantities, conditions and comparisons into mathematical structure. Another learner is excellent at calculations but cannot justify a geometry argument. The support needed is different.

For a small diagnostic, compare two tasks: ‘solve 2x + 7 = 19’ and ‘a quantity doubled and then increased by seven is nineteen; find it and explain why’. The first tests equation procedure; the second tests mathematical modelling and language. A tutor who responds to both with ten copies of the first task is not yet diagnosing the learner.

A useful mathematics explanation should move among a diagram, a spoken statement, an equation and a check. Strong practice then changes the surface of the problem to see whether the idea survives.

Primary and junior secondary: protect concept development

For younger pupils, choose help that strengthens quantity, shapes, measurement, number relationships and reasoning without turning every free hour into more examinations. For junior-secondary mathematics, expect coherent development of algebra, geometry, statistics and connections between them. Ask the tutor to point to the relevant school chapter and identify a prerequisite from an earlier grade.

China’s Ministry of Education published a revised compulsory-education Mathematics curriculum standard in 2022. A tutor claiming syllabus expertise should be able to explain the school level and curriculum rather than introduce competition questions indiscriminately. ‘Harder’ is not automatically ‘better’.

Senior secondary and Gaokao mathematics need a different decision

At upper-secondary level, a parent asking about Gaokao maths tutoring needs to identify the candidate’s province, current curriculum and examination arrangements, school assessment evidence and remaining preparation time. Avoid promises that a single crash course will transform an examination outcome.

Consider a student who regularly loses points in functions. If the real weakness is reading domain restrictions, more timed papers may reproduce the error. A focused lesson can instead connect inputs, outputs, graphs and the algebra that describes them, then revisit the idea in a new function problem. Timed execution comes after correct understanding.

Beijing and Shanghai: use the actual city context, not a slogan

eduKate has recently published Tuition | Beijing and Tuition | Shanghai. These city guides are useful starting points for thinking about family routines, school pace and local learning environments. They are not a licence to treat all Beijing and Shanghai schools alike. Ask the school and tutor about that pupil’s programme, language of instruction, homework load and permitted support.

An international or bilingual school learner may need a different mathematical vocabulary bridge from a learner following the local Chinese-medium textbook. Switching between English and Chinese explanations can expose a translation gap; it is not necessarily evidence that the mathematics itself is missing.

What about vocational education and university?

Mathematics opens more doors than an examination ranking. A learner interested in machinery needs units, ratios, measurement and the ability to read diagrams. Computing introduces discrete structures, logic and statistics. Finance and operations require proportional reasoning and data literacy. Later vocational and higher-education programmes may demand applied numeracy, calculus or linear algebra, depending on their particular curriculum.

A family deciding between an academically intensive and a skills-oriented route should ask which mathematical capabilities the chosen programme uses. Singapore’s JC, ITE and polytechnic labels should not be transplanted into China’s school and vocational system as if they were equivalent institutions.

The tutor-selection interview that is worth having

  • Which textbook, academic year and examination route does your work match?
  • Is the tutoring service authorised for this learner’s age, subject, location and schedule? How can we verify this independently?
  • Can you show one misconception from the student’s own workings before proposing a package?
  • Will the learner explain solutions, or only imitate the teacher’s model answer?
  • What happens when a practice answer is wrong: another worksheet or a diagnosis?
  • Can the proposed timetable protect sleep, exercise, schoolwork and family time?
  • Will the plan be reduced or stopped when independent mastery is demonstrated?

From eduKate’s Singapore model to an honest China comparison

The Clementi Secondary 1 Mathematics tutorial demonstrates a transferable educational principle: small groups can make a pupil’s thinking visible, letting the tutor catch an error at the point it begins. That is an example of eduKate’s Singapore-based 3-pax approach, not an offer of eduKate tuition centres in China. The question to take to any provider is whether feedback is close enough to show the student why an operation is correct.

One final thought

A good mathematics tutor should create more independent thought, not make the child dependent on another adult’s worked solution. In China, this educational standard must sit alongside careful legal and welfare checks. That combination is a better starting point than a promise of higher scores.
