The SEC G2 Additional Mathematics syllabus (K232) is the official SEAB document that sets out what students in Singapore are examined on in G2 Additional Mathematics. This guide explains how the syllabus is organised, how the two papers work, what the examiners look for and how K232 compares with G3 Additional Mathematics.
What this quick-reference guide does: This compact reference identifies the G2 Additional Mathematics papers, their structure and the examinable strands. The primary K232 guide adds worked algebra, trigonometry, calculus and a useful bridge from G2 Mathematics. Match revision materials to the actual SEAB subject code, not merely to a broad Science or Mathematics label.
The K232 syllabus is official.
It is short, precise and dense.
It rewards a close reading.
Once you know how it is organised, it becomes a useful map.
This guide is useful for families who need to:
- understand what the two K232 papers look like;
- check which topics are included and which are left out;
- see how G2 Additional Mathematics differs from G3; or
- make sense of the assessment objectives and the formula list.
At eduKateSG, we start from the syllabus document when we plan Additional Mathematics lessons, so that practice matches what is examined.

What the Syllabus Is For
The syllabus is written for students who have an aptitude and interest in mathematics.
It has four aims:
- build concepts and skills for higher studies in mathematics, and support other subjects, especially the sciences;
- develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills through problem-solving;
- connect ideas within mathematics, and between mathematics and the sciences; and
- appreciate the abstract nature and power of mathematics.
Before it comes G2 Mathematics. The syllabus assumes that content, plus two extra topics: solving linear inequalities, and sketching quadratic graphs. These are not tested directly, but may be needed inside questions on other topics.
After it, the introduction names one course: the syllabus intends to prepare students adequately for G3 Additional Mathematics.
How the Examination Is Structured
K232 has two written papers. The scheme of assessment lists no other component.
Paper 1
- Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Marks: 70
- Weighting: 50%
- Questions: 13 to 15 questions of varying marks and lengths
- Choice: none, as candidates answer all questions
Paper 2
- Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Marks: 70
- Weighting: 50%
- Questions: 8 to 10 questions of varying marks and lengths
- Choice: none, as candidates answer all questions
Both papers carry equal weight. Paper 2 has fewer questions for the same 70 marks, so its questions carry more marks on average.
The syllabus also states that leaving out essential working will cost marks. Non-exact answers are given to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place for angles in degrees, unless the question says otherwise.
What the Syllabus Covers
The content is organised into three strands, with seven topics in all.
Algebra
- quadratic functions, including maximum and minimum values by completing the square;
- equations and inequalities, including the nature of roots and whether a line meets, touches or misses a curve;
- surds; and
- polynomials and partial fractions, including the remainder and factor theorems and solving cubic equations.
Geometry and Trigonometry
- trigonometric functions, identities and equations, in degrees or radians, including writing a cos θ + b sin θ as R cos(θ ± α) or R sin(θ ± α); and
- coordinate geometry in two dimensions, including parallel and perpendicular lines, and circles.
Calculus
- differentiation of powers of x, with products, quotients and the chain rule;
- stationary points, tangents and normals, connected rates of change, and maxima and minima problems;
- integration as the reverse of differentiation; and
- definite integrals and the area of a region bounded by a curve and lines.
The syllabus also marks some exclusions, such as the general solution of trigonometric equations, problems involving two circles and the area between two curves.
The strands connect. AO2 asks students to make and use connections across topics.
How K232 Compares with G3 Additional Mathematics (K341)
- topics: K232 has seven, while K341 has ten, adding binomial expansions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and proofs in plane geometry;
- papers: K232 papers are 1 hour 45 minutes and 70 marks each, against 2 hours 15 minutes and 90 marks in K341;
- weightings: K232 puts about 50% on standard techniques (AO1), against 35% in K341; and
- next step: K232 points to G3 Additional Mathematics, while K341 points to A-Level H2 Mathematics.
What the Examiners Are Looking For
The syllabus lists three assessment objectives, with approximate weightings.
AO1: Use and Apply Standard Techniques (50%)
Recall facts, terminology and notation, read information from tables, graphs, diagrams and texts, and carry out routine procedures.
AO2: Solve Problems in a Variety of Contexts (40%)
Identify the relevant concept, translate information between forms, connect topics, set problems up in mathematical terms and interpret results in context.
AO3: Reason and Communicate Mathematically (10%)
Justify statements, explain answers in context, and write mathematical arguments and proofs.
Half the weighting sits on standard techniques.
The other half asks students to solve problems and explain their reasoning.
How to Read the Syllabus Document
The document is short. Read it in order once.
- Introduction: the three strands, and the course it prepares students for
- Aims: the purpose of the subject, in four points
- Assessment Objectives: AO1 to AO3 and their approximate weightings
- Scheme of Assessment: the two papers, timings, marks and notes on working, formulae, accuracy and units
- Use of Calculators: a single line on approved calculators
- Subject Content: the assumed knowledge, then the seven topics by strand, including what is excluded
- Mathematical Formulae: the formulae given to candidates, so you can see what must be learnt
- Mathematical Notation: the symbols used in the mathematics papers
Common Misunderstandings
“G2 Additional Mathematics is G3 with easier questions.”
The content itself is different. K232 has seven topics and K341 has ten. Binomial expansions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and plane geometry proofs are not K232 topics.
“G2 Mathematics topics no longer matter.”
The syllabus assumes G2 Mathematics, plus linear inequalities and quadratic graph sketching. These are not tested directly, but may be needed inside other questions.
“Paper 1 and Paper 2 test different topics.”
The syllabus does not assign topics to a paper. The two papers share the same time, marks and weighting, and differ in the number of questions.
“Only the final answer counts.”
The syllabus states that omitting essential working loses marks. AO3 also rewards justification, explanation and proof.
“Every formula will be given.”
The formula list covers the quadratic formula, trigonometric identities and triangle formulae. It has no formulae for differentiation, integration or coordinate geometry.
How Students Can Use the Syllabus
1. Make a topic checklist
List the seven topics, A1 to A4, G1, G2 and C1, and rate your confidence in each one.
2. Check the assumed knowledge
Make sure G2 Mathematics, linear inequalities and quadratic graph sketching are secure.
3. Mark the exclusions
Note what is left out, so revision time goes to what is examined.
4. Know the formula list
Practise with the formulae that are given, and learn the rest thoroughly.
5. Write full working
Show each essential step, and round answers to the accuracy the syllabus asks for.
6. Practise to time
Work through full papers in 1 hour 45 minutes each.
How Parents Can Help
- download the syllabus and keep a copy at home;
- ask to see the topic checklist once in a while;
- check that revision covers all three strands, not only the favourite ones;
- make sure your child practises with the calculator they will use in the examination;
- encourage full working, even when the answer is right; and
- keep conversations about Additional Mathematics calm and specific.
How eduKateSG Uses the Additional Mathematics Syllabus
- we map lessons to the K232 topic list, strand by strand;
- we check G2 Mathematics foundations, since the syllabus assumes them;
- we teach clear, complete working, because essential working carries marks;
- we use the assessment objectives to see whether a mistake is about technique, problem-solving or reasoning; and
- we practise under the timing of the two papers.
