How to Make Sense of the SEC G2 Science (Physics, Biology) Syllabus in Singapore | K224 Papers, Topics and Marks

Classroom group smiling and waving around open books at a table.

The SEC G2 Science (Physics, Biology) syllabus, code K224, is the official SEAB document for students in Singapore whose G2 Science course combines Physics with Biology. This guide explains which four papers K224 candidates sit, how Physics and Biology share the marks, what each science covers and how to find your way through the SEAB document.

What this quick-reference guide does: Use this reference for the G2 Physics–Biology K224 paper distribution and the assessed sections. The full guide connects motion, circuits, cells, body systems and evidence-based investigation without confusing this pair with another Science code. Match revision materials to the actual SEAB subject code, not merely to a broad Science or Mathematics label.

The K224 syllabus is official and carefully worded.

It is also printed inside a single G2 Science document that includes Chemistry.

It is easy to stop after the first few pages.

Once you know which sections are yours, the document becomes a clear map.

This guide is useful for families who need to:

  • find the K224 papers in a six-paper table;
  • see the thirteen Physics topics and eight Biology topics;
  • check what the syllabus says about practical work; or
  • understand what the examiners mean by knowledge, handling information and experimental skills.

At eduKateSG, we begin with the official syllabus whenever we plan lessons, and this guide shows how that habit works for G2 Science.

What the Syllabus Is For

All three G2 Science combinations share the same three aims:

  • a worthwhile experience of science for every student, including those who will not study it further;
  • understanding and skills linked to the practices of science, applied to real problems; and
  • values such as curiosity, creativity, responsibility and healthy scepticism.

In Physics, the focus is energy, matter and how they relate, explained through the models, principles and laws of classical physics.

In Biology, the syllabus places less emphasis on factual material and more on understanding and applying concepts. Its big question is how living organisms work to sustain life.

The Biology section adds that its assessment is meant to test skills, comprehension and insight in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

The document does not say what comes before or after K224. SEAB lists it beside Science (Physics, Chemistry), K223, and Science (Chemistry, Biology), K225.

How the Examination Is Structured

The combined document sets out six papers. K224 takes Papers 1, 2, 5 and 6. The Chemistry papers, 3 and 4, are not part of K224.

Papers 1 and 2: Physics

  • Session: 1 hour 15 minutes for the pair
  • Paper 1: Multiple Choice, 20 compulsory questions, 20 marks, 20%
  • Paper 2: Structured, 30 marks, 30%
  • Paper 2 Section A: 22 marks of compulsory structured questions, the last worth 8 marks
  • Paper 2 Section B: 8 marks, a choice of one question from two
  • Equipment: candidates should have geometrical instruments with them for both Physics papers

Papers 5 and 6: Biology

  • Session: 1 hour 15 minutes for the pair
  • Paper 5: Multiple Choice, 20 compulsory questions, 20 marks, 20%
  • Paper 6: Structured, 30 marks, 30%
  • Sections: the same Section A (22 marks) and Section B (8 marks, one question from two) pattern as Paper 2

No more than 30 minutes is advised for each multiple-choice paper, so the structured paper gets the larger share of each session.

Physics and Biology carry the same weight. Within each science, the structured paper is worth more than the multiple-choice paper.

What the Syllabus Covers

K224 draws on the Physics and Biology sections. Physics has six sections and thirteen topics; Biology has three sections and eight topics.

Physics: Six Sections

  • measurement: physical quantities, units and measurement;
  • Newtonian mechanics: kinematics, force and pressure, dynamics and energy;
  • thermal physics: kinetic particle model of matter and thermal processes;
  • waves: general wave properties and the electromagnetic spectrum;
  • electricity and magnetism: electric charge and current, d.c. circuits and practical electricity; and
  • radioactivity.

Biology I: Cells and the Chemistry of Life

  • cell structure and organisation, including plant and animal cells and cell specialisation;
  • movement of substances by diffusion and osmosis; and
  • biological molecules, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins and enzymes.

Biology II: The Human Body (Maintaining Life)

  • nutrition in humans;
  • transport in humans, including blood and coronary heart disease;
  • respiration in humans; and
  • infectious diseases in humans, including influenza and pneumococcal disease.

Biology III: Living Together (Plants and Animals)

  • nutrition and transport in flowering plants, including photosynthesis, transpiration and translocation.

The two sciences touch at a few points. Physics includes the effects of electromagnetic waves on cells and tissues, and the dangers and uses of radioactivity. Energy appears in the big ideas of both sections.

What the Examiners Are Looking For

The same three assessment objectives apply to the Physics and Biology papers, with approximate weightings.

  • Knowledge with Understanding: about 45%, with about 20% of the marks allocated to recall
  • Handling Information and Solving Problems: about 45%, covering data, patterns, explanations, predictions and problem-solving
  • Experimental Skills and Investigations: about 10%, assessed within the written papers

Knowing facts matters.

Using them matters just as much.

How to Read the Syllabus Document

Read the shared front pages, then go straight to your two sciences.

  • Aims and Practices of Science: why science is taught at this level
  • Assessment Objectives: the three skill areas and their weightings
  • Scheme of Assessment: find the K224 line, Papers 1, 2, 5 and 6
  • Physics Section: introduction, disciplinary ideas, content structure, subject content, key quantities and practical guidelines
  • Chemistry Section: skip it, as it is not part of K224
  • Biology Section: the same parts as Physics, with learning outcomes for each of the eight topics
  • Glossary of Terms: the meaning of command words such as “Describe” and “Explain”
  • Special Note: nomenclature, units, significant figures, calculators and geometrical instruments

Common Misunderstandings

“The K224 syllabus is a separate document.”

It is part of one G2 Science document. Read the Physics and Biology sections and skip the Chemistry pages.

“Without a practical paper, practical work does not matter.”

Students are expected to have carried out at least four tasks from each practical list, such as finding density, using a light microscope and identifying nutrients. Theory papers may refer to these techniques.

“Biology is mostly memorising.”

The Biology section says it puts less emphasis on factual material and more on understanding and application. Across all the theory papers, about 20% of the marks are allocated to recall.

“The Physics papers come with a formula sheet.”

The document does not include or promise a formula list or data sheet. Learn the key quantities, symbols and units listed in the Physics section.

“Each paper is timed separately.”

Papers 1 and 2 share one session of 1 hour 15 minutes, and Papers 5 and 6 share another.

How Students Can Use the Syllabus

1. Find your four papers

Circle Papers 1, 2, 5 and 6 in the scheme of assessment.

2. Build a two-column topic list

Put the thirteen Physics topics on one side and the eight Biology topics on the other, then rate each one.

3. Rehearse the paired sessions

Practise a multiple-choice paper in 30 minutes or less, then move straight into the structured paper.

4. Revisit the practical lists

Understand the techniques behind tasks such as measuring resistance, observing cells under a microscope and investigating enzyme action.

5. Apply ideas to new examples

Biology assessment includes unfamiliar contexts, so practise explaining familiar ideas in new settings.

6. Watch words and units

Use the glossary for command words and the Special Note for units and significant figures.

How Parents Can Help

  • keep a copy of the G2 Science document and mark the Physics and Biology sections;
  • ask your child which of the twenty-one topics feel weakest;
  • ask what practical work they have done in school;
  • check that your child has an approved calculator and geometrical instruments for the Physics papers;
  • encourage short, regular revision in both sciences; and
  • keep conversations about results calm and specific.

How eduKateSG Uses the G2 Science (Physics, Biology) Syllabus

  • we read the SEAB document ourselves before giving any advice;
  • we help families separate the K224 pages from the Chemistry pages they do not need;
  • we use the assessment objectives to see whether a difficulty is about recall, applying information or experimental skills;
  • we point out that the Biology section values understanding and application over memorised facts; and
  • we are honest about whether our classes are the right fit for a student’s science needs.

Getting Support

Every student starts from a different place.

Speak with us about your child’s level, subject and recent results. If our 3-pax classes are the right fit, we will explain how they work. If they are not, we will say so honestly.

Format: Premium 3-pax small-group tutorials, 1.5 hours weekly

The usual first step is a parent–student consultation.

What Parents Can Bring to the Consultation

Useful materials include:

  • a copy of the syllabus, or its code;
  • recent test papers and weighted assessments;
  • the latest report book;
  • the school’s assessment schedule; and
  • examples of questions the student finds difficult.

We are not only looking at the score.

We are looking for patterns.
