How Water Filters Work | Activated Carbon, Reverse Osmosis and Safe Drinking Water

Water filters remove or reduce selected substances from water using physical barriers, adsorption, membranes or other treatment processes. A sediment filter can trap particles; activated carbon can reduce certain tastes, odours and chemicals; and reverse osmosis can reduce many dissolved substances when correctly designed and maintained.

No filter removes every contaminant. Choose a treatment method for a specific water-quality concern, not a general promise of perfectly pure water. In Singapore, PUB supplies treated drinking water that meets applicable drinking-water standards; a household filter is not automatically necessary for safety.

Quick summary: identify the water concern; match it to a tested treatment technology; check independent certification for the exact claim; follow maintenance instructions; and remember that a neglected filter can create problems instead of solving them.

How sediment filtration works

A sediment filter uses a physical barrier to retain particles larger than the effective pore size or filtration threshold. It can help reduce visible grit, rust particles and other suspended solids.

It does not necessarily remove dissolved chemicals, viruses or bacteria. A clear-looking glass of water is not proof of microbiological or chemical safety.

What activated carbon does

Activated carbon has a large internal surface area that can adsorb certain substances. It is commonly used to improve taste and odour and can reduce specified contaminants depending on the product.

Carbon is not a universal purifier. Performance depends on carbon type, contact time, water conditions and the contaminants involved.

How reverse osmosis works

Reverse osmosis applies pressure to push water through a selective membrane. Many dissolved substances are retained more effectively than water molecules, producing treated water and a separate reject stream.

The process can reduce many contaminants but uses water and energy, and its performance depends on the membrane, pressure and maintenance. It should not be assumed to remove every possible substance completely.

What ultrafiltration does

Ultrafiltration uses membranes with pores designed to separate selected particles and microorganisms from water. It generally differs from reverse osmosis in the size of substances removed.

The exact removal performance depends on membrane specifications and system integrity. Dissolved salts may pass through some ultrafiltration systems.

What UV disinfection does

Ultraviolet treatment exposes water to suitable UV radiation to inactivate susceptible microorganisms under defined conditions.

UV does not physically remove dissolved chemicals or particles. Turbidity, lamp condition and contact conditions affect performance, and some systems need additional filtration.

Why flow rate matters

A filter needs sufficient contact time or membrane capacity to work as designed. High flow rates can reduce performance if they exceed the product’s tested limits.

Use the correct cartridge and follow the specified capacity and replacement interval. Faster water delivery is not always better treatment.

What certification means

Independent standards such as NSF/ANSI 42, 53 or 58 address different performance and safety claims. A certified product should be checked for the specific contaminant reduction claim relevant to your concern.

A certification mark for taste improvement does not automatically prove removal of every chemical or pathogen. Verify the exact model and claims in the certifier’s listing.

Why filters need replacing

Filters can become clogged or exhausted. Carbon adsorption capacity is finite, while membranes and seals may deteriorate or foul.

Follow manufacturer instructions for replacement and sanitisation. Do not extend cartridge life indefinitely merely because the water still looks clear.

Can a filter introduce contamination?

A poorly maintained system can develop microbial growth or accumulate material. Improper installation may create leaks or cross-connections.

Keep components clean and replace cartridges on schedule. Seek qualified help if there is a suspected contamination or plumbing issue.

Singapore tap water

PUB treats and monitors Singapore’s drinking water under relevant standards. Household consumers should refer to PUB’s official guidance before assuming a filter is necessary.

If water is discoloured, has an unusual smell or is affected by a building plumbing problem, investigate the cause rather than relying on an unverified filter as a complete remedy.

How to choose a filter

Identify whether the goal is taste, visible particles or a specific tested contaminant. Compare verified removal claims, cost per litre, cartridge availability, water wastage and maintenance.

Avoid claims that one filter cures disease or removes every possible impurity. No household device should replace an official boil-water or do-not-drink advisory.

What to do during a water advisory

Follow the exact instructions from the relevant water authority. Boiling can address certain microbiological risks but does not remove many chemical contaminants.

A domestic filter is not automatically an approved substitute for boiling or bottled water. The appropriate action depends on the contaminant and advisory.

Frequently asked questions

Is filtered water always safer than tap water? Not necessarily; source quality and maintenance matter. Does carbon remove salt? Ordinary activated carbon is not a desalination method. Does reverse osmosis waste water? Many systems produce a reject stream.

Can a filter remove all bacteria? Only certain technologies under specified conditions; check verified claims. How often should cartridges be changed? Follow the product’s tested capacity and manufacturer schedule.

The mental model

Follow the sequence: source water → identified concern → suitable treatment process → verified output → maintenance. Each stage matters.

The best filter is not the most complicated one. It is the one that addresses a real problem, has evidence for the claimed performance and can be maintained correctly.
