Should My Child Write “Maybe” or “May Be”? | Bukit Timah English Tuition Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Bukit Timah English Tuition Guide

Should my child write “maybe” or “may be”?

Maybe is one word when it means something like perhaps. May be is two words when may is a modal verb followed by the verb be.

Write maybe in “Maybe the bus is late.” Write may be in “The bus may be late.” Both sentences express possibility, but the words perform different jobs and sit in different places.

Use this quick test now: replace the choice with perhaps. If the sentence still works—“Perhaps the bus is late”—choose maybe. If the subject comes before the phrase—“The bus may be late”—keep may be as two verbs.

This is not a formality contest. Both forms are standard. The correct spacing follows sentence structure.

1. Identify the job before choosing the spacing

Maybe is an adverb. It comments on the possibility of a whole idea: “Maybe Hana has the key.” It often appears near the beginning of a sentence, though context can place it elsewhere.

May be is a verb phrase. May expresses possibility and be carries the verb meaning: “Hana may be at home.” The subject Hana comes before the two-word phrase.

may bepart of the predicateThe final value may be negative.
One meaning of possibility, two sentence structures.

A learner who chooses by sound alone will struggle because the forms sound alike. A learner who identifies the subject and verb phrase has a stable reason.

2. Use the “perhaps” test

Replace maybe with perhaps. “Maybe the result is unusual” becomes “Perhaps the result is unusual,” so the one-word adverb is correct.

Now test “The result may be unusual.” “The result perhaps unusual” is incomplete because the sentence has lost its verb. That tells us may be must remain as two words.

Original editing routine

  • Find the subject of the clause.
  • Look immediately after the subject for may be.
  • Try perhaps in place of the disputed form.
  • If perhaps can comment on the whole clause, use maybe.
  • If the clause needs may plus be as its verb phrase, use two words.

The test is a tool, not a chant. Always read the completed sentence for meaning.

3. Move the phrase to expose the structure

Many pairs can be transformed without changing the central idea: “Maybe the answer is 24” and “The answer may be 24.” Moving the expression changes its grammar, so the spelling changes too.

This movement is useful during editing. If a child is uncertain about “Maybe it is too late,” move the subject first: “It may be too late.” The contrast makes the two jobs visible.

Adverb at the clause edgeVerb phrase after the subject

Maybe our estimate is too high. Our estimate may be too high.
Maybe the narrator is unreliable. The narrator may be unreliable.
Maybe the two events are connected. The two events may be connected.
Original contrast pairs.

The two sentences in each row are close in meaning, but they are not built identically. That is why copying the spacing from one position to another can create an error.

4. Edit real sentence contexts

In composition writing, maybe can reflect a character’s tentative thought: “Maybe I had judged him too quickly.” In an explanation, may be often follows the subject: “The difference may be caused by measurement error.”

Do not ban maybe as informal or praise may be as automatically formal. Clarity comes from using the form required by the grammar, then checking whether the tone suits the task.

Four useful checks

  • Maybe she forgot. Replace with perhaps: it works.
  • She may be tired. The subject is followed by the verb phrase.
  • The answer maybe correct. Incorrect: the clause needs may be.
  • May be we should leave. Incorrect: the clause-opening adverb should be maybe.

Ask the learner to correct the sentence and explain the job of the chosen form. Explanation prevents lucky spacing.

5. Diagnose the confusion and transfer the test

A student may know both definitions yet still fail under time pressure because the sentence is not being parsed. Diagnosis should check whether the learner can find the subject, recognise a modal verb and test a replacement—not merely recite “one word or two.”

Transfer the routine to cannot/can not, everyday/every day and into/in to. Each pair rewards the same habit: identify the word class or phrase boundary, then make the spelling decision.

For Singapore families, Posting Groups PG1, PG2 and PG3 are initial secondary-school posting groups, not G1, G2 and G3 subject levels. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, subject levels reflect the subject a student actually takes. From 2027, the GCE N(T)-, N(A)- and O-Level examinations are combined and renamed the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC); the applicable English syllabus depends on subject level, examination year and candidate type.

When tuition can help

Tuition is useful when a child can spot the pair in a vocabulary list but cannot edit it inside a composition, comprehension response or explanation. In a verified 3-pax setting, each learner can mark the subject, name the phrase and justify the choice aloud. Feedback stays specific, and no grade promise is needed.

Sources and scope

The contrast pairs and editing routine are original practical illustrations. Teachers may set task-specific style expectations; the grammar distinction itself depends on the role of the words in the sentence.
