To become an MOE teacher through the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) route, a degree holder applies for MOE recruitment, goes through selection and a school teaching stint, and progresses to NIE training subject to the applicable assessment and admission arrangements. An application, an employment offer and a confirmed NIE intake are different milestones. Start with the current MOE application notice, which NTU directs prospective PGDE applicants to use.
Checked 6 November 2026. This guide focuses on graduates seeking the MOE-sponsored route into mainstream school teaching. Recruitment windows, teaching subjects and individual offers can change. The examples below are hypothetical planning examples.

PGDE prepares graduates for teaching at primary, secondary or junior college level. NTU states that applicants need at least a bachelor’s degree and encourages Singapore citizens and permanent residents interested in MOE schools to apply through MOE. Meeting that academic starting point does not itself establish that a particular teaching subject or appointment is available. See NTU’s PGDE programme information.
| Your starting point | Where to begin |
|---|---|
| A degree, without a professional teaching qualification | Check MOE’s current PGDE recruitment notice. |
| An existing professional teaching qualification | Check the full-time trained-teacher route. |
| A diploma, A-Levels or another pre-university qualification | Check the applicable MOE teacher-entry routes; the PGDE degree requirement does not disappear because another route accepts different qualifications. |
MOE is the employer assessing a prospective teaching appointment. NIE, the National Institute of Education at NTU, provides the professional programme. Keep those roles separate when deciding whom to contact.
An education-related master’s degree also requires careful interpretation. NIE explains that its general graduate programmes do not automatically supply a teaching qualification for MOE schools. Read the relevant NIE FAQ before assuming that any postgraduate education course serves the same purpose as PGDE.
On 6 November 2026, the official application page listed the 2026 exercises. The September window had closed. Its timetable shows why the application year and NIE intake year can differ:
| Milestone | Published timing |
|---|---|
| Application window | 8–28 September 2026; closed. |
| Earliest assumption of duty | June or July 2027. |
| Earliest possible NIE intake | Non-PE: January 2028. PE: July 2028. |
MOE labels these timings as indicative and dependent on individual processing and training arrangements. They are not guaranteed dates for a particular applicant. Use the live application notice for the next published window.
MOE encourages students to apply early in their final year, according to its PGDE overview. Keep your expected completion date and available results ready.
Prepare a tidy folder with your degree certificate or available results, complete transcripts, employment history and relevant teaching, mentoring or youth-work experience. Follow the current application’s document and file requirements.
Check inconsistent names, missing pages and unexplained employment dates. Keep your submitted answers and acknowledgement. Record the application deadline, assessments, possible employment start and proposed NIE intake separately; knowing one date does not determine the others. If you are employed, add your notice period to the same planning sheet.
A subject preference is an informed request. It is not a promise that the requested subject, school level or school will be assigned. The government’s Discover NYC teacher guide explains that qualifications, teaching level and school needs affect subject allocation.
Start with your transcript. Which subjects did you study in depth? Which ideas can you explain accurately? What experience shows that you can work with the relevant age group? Academic knowledge and teaching experience provide different kinds of evidence, so describe each clearly.
Hypothetical example: an engineering graduate hopes to teach secondary Mathematics. A useful preparation sheet identifies relevant university modules, one mathematical idea they can explain simply, and an occasion when they helped a learner correct a misconception. “I use mathematics at work” is a starting point; the detail makes that statement understandable.
If you are offered a different subject or level, ask what you would teach, what preparation is provided and how the proposed route fits your background. Make the decision using the actual assignment. MOE’s selection guidance states that assigned subjects cannot be changed once you are appointed.
MOE’s current selection guidance describes an interview, any required entrance proficiency tests and a medical examination. These components may not happen in sequence.
The interview includes two written tasks, a short presentation and discussion with the panel. Your invitation identifies the shortlisted subjects, arrangements and documents. Mother Tongue Language applicants have specified tasks in their respective language; follow the invitation’s instructions.
For a short teaching demonstration, choose one idea with a clear learning goal. Decide what the learner should understand by the end, anticipate one likely error and include a question that checks understanding. Rehearse aloud. A topic that feels obvious in your head can become difficult to explain in a few minutes.
Hypothetical practice: teach why one-third is larger than one-quarter when the wholes are equal. Draw two equal rectangles, divide one into three equal parts and the other into four, then compare one part from each. Ask what would change if the original rectangles were different sizes. This reveals whether the learner understands the condition behind the comparison.
For written and spoken responses, practise identifying the problem before suggesting an action. Explain what information you need, whom you would consult and how you would check whether your response helped. These are preparation exercises, not predictions of MOE’s questions or scoring criteria.
Use real experiences. A modest example you can explain honestly is more useful than an impressive story whose details you cannot substantiate.
MOE’s selection page says interviewed applicants can generally expect an update within four to five weeks, while explaining that processing may continue beyond that point. Treat this as guidance, not a guaranteed offer deadline.
An entrance-test invitation or medical examination does not mean you have been selected for appointment. Successful selection leads to an offer for the compulsory contract-teaching stint and an appointment briefing.
Keep the language of each message precise. An interview invitation confirms an interview. A request for documents asks for evidence. An assessment appointment is another assessment step. Maintain a short record of what you have completed and what remains outstanding.
A useful follow-up identifies your exercise, application reference if provided, last completed step and the clarification you need. “Could you confirm whether any documents remain outstanding?” is easier to answer than a request for certainty about the entire process.
Before making irreversible employment arrangements, understand the written offer, remaining conditions and confirmed starting date. For a career switcher, the practical issue is how the transition fits your notice period and household commitments. Keep a possible appointment separate from a confirmed one.
The teaching stint before NIE and the practicum within professional training happen at different stages. MOE’s current PGDE overview specifies a minimum of three months of contract teaching as an untrained teacher. The hosting school assesses your readiness to proceed to NIE. A minimum duration is not a guaranteed progression date.
The government career guide also describes the pre-admission stint as paid. Use your own appointment arrangements for the timetable and responsibilities rather than adopting another applicant’s experience.
Once you are in a school, ask what good progress would look like during the stint. Clarify whom to approach for lesson feedback, how responsibilities are introduced and what evidence will help you improve.
A simple weekly reflection can record one explanation that worked, one misconception you noticed, one piece of feedback and one change to try. Keep student information within the school’s approved arrangements; personal learning notes do not need identifiable student details.
A practicum is a supervised school component within teacher preparation. Earlier contract experience is valuable, but completing a stint does not by itself mean you have completed PGDE or every later training requirement.
Older webpages often describe a 16-month PGDE. In a 7 May 2026 parliamentary answer, the Minister for Education stated that MOE and NIE were shortening the programme from 16 to 12 months from 2027. Match that announcement to the exact intake and specialisation named in your offer.
| Stage or specialisation | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Application and selection | Your exercise’s deadlines and any remaining assessments. |
| Untrained teaching stint | The starting date, expected review points and progression arrangements in your appointment. |
| PGDE covered by the 2027 change | The applicable 12-month programme and confirmed intake. |
| Physical Education | Separate arrangements: MOE’s October 2026 PE FAQ specifies two years of training. |
The October 2026 PE applicant FAQ also specifies a Physical Proficiency Test and a three-year teaching bond following successful training. PE applicants should read that route’s instructions directly.
A “12-month programme” describes a training component. It does not mean the whole journey from today’s application to completion of service commitments lasts one year. Keep recruitment, school experience, NIE study and subsequent service as separate periods when planning.
MOE’s current PGDE terms state that NIE training is fully funded and a three-year teaching bond follows completion. They also specify damages if a trainee fails to graduate, or resigns or is terminated before completing bonded service. Read the actual agreement before accepting.
Before signing, make sure you can explain these points in ordinary language:
- The role, teaching level and subject assignment you are accepting.
- The pay and benefits for each relevant stage, including the school stint and NIE training.
- Which training costs are covered and whether any personal costs remain.
- When bonded service begins, how long it lasts and which conditions apply.
- What the agreement says about withdrawal, incomplete training or departure before obligations are fulfilled.
- Which dates are confirmed and which depend on later decisions.
Ask the recruitment team to explain unclear terms before acceptance. Comparing headline monthly pay alone leaves out the timing, training and commitment that shape the decision.
Hypothetical planning example: a recent graduate and a parent changing careers may both be interested in PGDE. The graduate may need to coordinate graduation documents; the parent may also need to arrange childcare and a notice period. The same professional route can require different personal preparations. Write those preparations down alongside the confirmed dates.
Do I apply to MOE or directly to NIE?
For the MOE-sponsored employment route covered here, start with MOE’s current recruitment instructions. NTU’s PGDE page directs prospective applicants to MOE’s application-window information. Do not substitute an application for a different NIE graduate programme.
Can I choose my school and teaching subject?
You can express preferences where the application allows them. Qualifications and organisational needs also affect assignment, as described in the government career guide. Confirm what the actual offer provides before making plans around a preferred school or subject.
Does passing an interview guarantee admission to NIE?
No. Recruitment, the school stint and admission are separate steps. MOE’s current route includes the hosting school’s assessment of readiness before progression to NIE.
Is PGDE now one year for everyone?
The announced change is 12 months from 2027 for the relevant programme. PE has separate two-year arrangements in the October 2026 applicant guidance. Your track and intake determine which timetable applies.
What should I do today if no suitable application window is open?
Prepare your documents, identify the subjects your academic record supports and practise explaining one idea clearly. Record your notice period and practical commitments. Then return to the official application page for the next published exercise.
