Find the answer you need

Apply for MOE relief teaching through the Scheme for Relief Educators (SRE) in REMS 2.0. Registration and a school appointment are separate steps: approval puts you in the pool of candidates, while an actual assignment still depends on a school needing and engaging you.

Checked on 6 November 2026. The application window currently published by MOE is 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. This guide concerns SRE appointments in Singapore; other teaching and school-support schemes have their own requirements.

SECTION 1 OF 8

1. Choose the right route before filling in a form

Back to contents

Relief teaching can help you discover whether you enjoy explaining ideas, guiding a class and taking responsibility for a school day. It also asks a practical question: can you be available when the school needs you?

Start by matching your purpose to the scheme. MOE’s adjunct and relief directory separates these routes:

Your situationRelevant route
You have no formal teacher training and want relief teaching experience.Scheme for Relief Educators (SRE).
You are a former MOE teacher seeking flexible teaching assignments.Flexi-Adjunct Teaching; investigate Contract Adjunct Teaching for a longer engagement.
You want administrative or operational school work.Flexi-Relief Scheme, which is separate from SRE.
Which short-term school-work route should you investigate?

For SRE, the detailed MOE eligibility FAQ lists graduates with an on-campus degree, undergraduates studying on campus, and A-level or diploma holders exploring teaching. A-level and diploma holders apply under SRE (Undergraduate). If your qualification format differs, clarify eligibility with MOE.

The word “Undergraduate” on the form can therefore be confusing. Read the category instructions before deciding that you have opened the wrong application. Equally, meeting an academic condition does not tell you whether a particular class, subject or working arrangement suits you. That second decision requires a conversation about the actual assignment.

2. Apply within the published window and prepare a complete record

Back to contents

Current window: 1 November 2026–31 January 2027. MOE says applications outside this window are not accepted; processing generally takes four to six weeks. Check the official SRE page again before submitting.

Use REMS 2.0 with Singpass. The MOE FAQ explains the registration and application-status routes. Prepare your documents and availability before you begin, so the record describes what you can actually offer.

  1. Write down your available dates. Include the last date you can work and any fixed commitments, such as university lessons or National Service.
  2. Check your qualification evidence. Make sure the certificate or record you upload matches the qualification you select.
  3. Read the declarations and review the completed application. An accurate, consistent record is more useful than an ambitious description you cannot substantiate.
  4. Keep the acknowledgement. Retain the application reference and monitor the email address you supplied.

If you are still waiting for a certificate or your study status is unusual, ask how to describe it accurately. Do not enter a qualification as completed simply because you expect to finish soon.

Allow time between applying and any hoped-for start date. A sensible plan keeps other commitments realistic until you have both the necessary approval and a confirmed engagement. A submitted form alone is not a start date.

3. Find an assignment after registration

Back to contents

After approval, you can search REMS school postings, receive contact from schools or enquire directly. Registration does not guarantee employment. These are the routes described in MOE’s SRE FAQ.

A useful enquiry makes a school’s next decision easy. State that your registration is approved, the dates you are available, the levels and subjects you could reasonably support, and how to contact you. Keep it short enough for a busy school office to understand at a glance.

Illustrative enquiry: “I am an approved SRE registrant available from 11 January to 26 February, Monday to Friday. My academic background is in English and History. May I check whether the school has suitable relief assignments and which staff member handles enquiries?” Adapt every detail to your own situation.

Do not send identity documents or bank records in an initial general enquiry. Ask the school how it wants any required documents submitted.

For example, a student who can work only on Tuesdays should say so immediately. A school needing daily cover for several weeks may be unable to use that availability, even if the applicant is capable and enthusiastic. That is a mismatch in the appointment, rather than a verdict on the person’s potential as a teacher.

Keep a simple enquiry record: school, date, contact, response and proposed period. This helps you follow up politely and prevents you from accidentally promising the same time to different schools.

4. Read the daily pay rules before estimating your income

Back to contents

The MOE SRE page currently publishes these rates:

Category or daily hoursPublished payment rule
GraduateS$130 per full day.
Undergraduate, A-level or diploma holderS$110 per full day.
At least 5.5 hoursFull daily rate.
At least 2.75 but under 5.5 hoursHalf daily rate.
Under 2.75 hoursNo salary payment.
Published SRE daily rates and qualifying hours

MOE states that wages are paid fortnightly. Keep that payment schedule in mind when planning short-term cash flow.

The MOE FAQ says lunch breaks are unpaid. Check the recorded working time, not simply the time between arriving and leaving.

A worked pay example

Illustration: an approved undergraduate-category educator works two qualifying full days and one qualifying half day. Using the published rate, the wages for those three days are S$110 + S$110 + S$55 = S$275, before any applicable deductions. This calculation says nothing about how many further days the school will offer.

Build a budget from confirmed assignments. Multiplying a day rate by every weekday in a month can create an income expectation that your actual appointment does not support. Keep payment timing, deductions and any relevant holiday arrangements separate from the simple multiplication above.

Also distinguish the school’s reporting time from the number of classroom periods. Clarify how the whole agreed working day is recorded, including any preparation or marking duties. This avoids discovering a difference between your assumption and the appointment after the work is done.

SECTION 5 OF 8

5. Agree the duties, hours and support before you accept

Back to contents

MOE states that SRE duties must be mutually agreed with the school; an appointment can run from one day to ten weeks per term. See the scheme conditions.

A parliamentary reply on 7 October 2026 explains that SRE pay uses daily or half-daily rates, with no additional remuneration merely because duties extend beyond 5.5 hours. Schools are to keep the assigned work, including preparation and marking, proportionate to that remuneration. Read the reply reproduced from Hansard.

Use that information to ask concrete questions before agreeing:

  • Which dates, reporting times and classes does this appointment cover?
  • Will I supervise prepared work, explain new material, mark assignments or perform other duties?
  • Who supplies the lesson materials and checks any subject questions I cannot answer?
  • Who can help with classroom management, student support or an unexpected incident?
  • How do I record attendance, working time and completed work?

A short assignment can still involve substantial responsibility. For a first posting, clarity about the handover matters more than assuming that familiar school subjects will make everything straightforward.

Think through the travel as well. An early reporting time may be manageable from one estate and difficult from another. Check the actual entrance and journey before accepting. Reliability begins with an arrangement you can sustain, rather than a promise made before looking at the timetable.

SECTION 6 OF 8

6. Prepare for the first morning and leave a useful handover

Back to contents

For the first appointment, MOE lists a bank statement and identification document for school verification. Follow the school’s submission arrangements and the official preparation guidance.

Then prepare for the work itself. Ask for a named contact, the day’s timetable, the class materials and the route for obtaining help. A school is easier to navigate when you know where to go and whom to ask before the first bell.

As a specific example of school expectations, NorthLight School’s relief-teaching description includes classroom management, attendance and marking. Its recruitment requirements are specific to that role; the example shows why a relief assignment can involve more than distributing a worksheet.

A simple first-day checklist

  • Confirm the correct class, room and attendance procedure.
  • Read the lesson instructions and identify the essential task.
  • Ask which student-support instructions you need for that lesson.
  • Check how to summon a staff member if help is required.
  • Confirm where pupils’ completed work and your lesson notes should go.

At the end of a lesson, leave a factual handover: what was covered, what remains unfinished and which question caused difficulty. “The class completed questions 1–4; several pupils need another explanation of equivalent fractions” helps the returning teacher act. “The class was okay” gives much less direction.

Use the school’s approved channels for student information. Keep personal reflections about your own teaching separate from identifiable pupil records.

SECTION 7 OF 8

7. Keep your availability, qualifications and registration current

Back to contents

The MOE FAQ sets out an easily missed restriction: you can be appointed by only one school at a time, including non-working days within that appointment. Check the contract dates before agreeing to another school.

Illustrative case: Maya works Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays under an appointment covering several weeks. She sees a Tuesday vacancy elsewhere. The empty day in her diary does not by itself establish that she can accept it. She should clarify the existing appointment before making another commitment.

When availability changes, update your record and tell the relevant school contact promptly. A change in university timetable or a new full-time job can alter what you can reliably deliver. If you already have an employer, check your employment terms before taking additional work.

SRE registration lasts three years, with a renewal notification 90 days before expiry. Renewal approval is needed before school engagements continue. Graduates moving from the undergraduate category must submit a fresh graduate-category application during the window. See MOE’s registration guidance.

Keep the expiry date beside your other work dates. Do not assume that a school wanting to retain you automatically renews your registration. Where you have an unresolved payroll or attendance issue, keep the dates and relevant records ready so the school administrator can investigate a specific question.

SECTION 8 OF 8

8. Questions to settle before your next step

Back to contents

Does SRE approval mean I have a job?

You still need a school engagement. Treat the approval as the point at which to pursue suitable assignments, rather than a reason to count unconfirmed income.

Can I choose my school and subject?

You can make your preferences clear when enquiring. Ask what the available assignment actually requires, and decide whether your knowledge, availability and support needs fit it. A preferred location alone is not enough information.

What if I have never managed a class?

Say so honestly. Ask what briefing and staff support will be available. Before starting, rehearse a short explanation, a clear set of instructions and how you would ask for help. You do not need to pretend that your first assignment is routine.

Will relief teaching secure a permanent teaching position?

Use the experience to test your interest and build specific examples of what you learned. Permanent recruitment is a separate decision. Keep notes about explaining a difficult idea, adapting an instruction and responding to feedback; those are more useful reflections than simply recording how many days you worked.

Where do I check a payment, leave or portal question?

Start with your appointment documents, the relevant school administrator and the MOE adjunct and relief FAQ. The SRE page also links to technical support and the enquiry route for wages or CPF. Specify the issue and dates when asking for help.

Your next step: check the current window, confirm the correct application category and write down the dates you can genuinely commit. Those three details turn a general interest in relief teaching into a practical application.
