Imagine two people disagreeing.
At Secondary 1, we might notice:
Person A thinks one thing.
Person B thinks another.
Variation.
At Secondary 2, we might ask:
Which position is better supported?
Selection.
At Secondary 3, another question appears:
How does Person A’s argument change after Person B challenges it?
Now the system is dynamic.
Position A affects Position B.
Position B feeds back into Position A.
The final state may be different from either starting position.
That is interaction.
The Living World Gives Us Feedback
Living systems are full of interactions.
An organism changes its behaviour because another organism appears.
One population affects another.
Competition changes access to resources.
Cooperation can change what becomes possible.
Signals generate responses.
Responses become new signals.
The environment changes, and organisms respond.
Organisms can also alter the environment.
For English, this gives us the architecture we need:
representation → response → changed representation
The important unit is no longer the isolated message.
It is the loop.

A useful model is:

A claim, action or representation appears.

Dialogue Is Not Two Monologues
Weak dialogue often looks like this:
“I don’t want to go,” Sarah said.
“The weather is bad,” Amir said.
“I am tired,” Sarah said.
“We should leave now,” Amir said.
Two people are producing sentences.
But the lines barely affect one another.
Now compare:
“I don’t want to go,” Sarah said.
“Because of the rain?” Amir asked.

Now each turn changes what comes next.

Clarification.
Reinterpretation.

Strong Dialogue Carries State Forward
Each line should know what happened before it.
If a character reveals new information, the next speaker should respond to it.
If a character becomes angry, subsequent language may change.
If someone apologises, the relationship may soften.
Dialogue therefore has memory.
It is a sequence of feedback-sensitive representations.
This is a strong Secondary 3 writing skill.
Interaction Changes Characterisation
Consider a student who appears confident when alone.

He becomes defensive.

A Strong Story Is Often a Chain of Responses
Weak story:
Event 1.

Strong story:
Event 1 changes what someone does.
That response creates Event 2.
Event 2 changes another person’s behaviour.
That creates Event 3.
Now the sequence is causally interactive.
This is why some narratives feel alive while others feel assembled.
The events are not merely adjacent.
They generate one another.
Secondary 3 Argument Works the Same Way
Suppose the student writes:
School uniforms are useful because they create a sense of identity.
Then adds:
Some people disagree because uniforms reduce individuality.
That is variation.
Now the student responds:
However, individuality does not depend entirely on clothing, and schools can still allow personal expression through activities, interests and achievements.
Now we have interaction.
Claim.
Counterclaim.
Response.
The argument has changed because opposition appeared.
This is much closer to mature argumentative writing.
A Counterargument Must Actually Affect the Argument
Students sometimes include:
Some people may disagree.
Then immediately continue as if nothing happened.
That is cosmetic counterargument.
A real counterargument creates pressure.
The writer should ask:
Does the objection expose a weakness?
Do I need to narrow my claim?
Add evidence?
Make a distinction?
Concede something?
Change the wording?
A counterargument is useful because it forces revision.
That is interaction.
Opposition Can Improve a Position
This is one of the deepest S3 ideas.
A challenge is not always something to defeat.
It can expose:
an assumption;
an exception;
an overstatement;
missing evidence;
an alternative explanation.
After responding, the original position may become stronger because it is now more precise.
For example:
Initial claim:
Social media is harmful to teenagers.
Counterpoint:
It can also support communication and community.
Revised claim:
Excessive or poorly regulated social media use can create significant risks for teenagers, even though the platforms can also provide social and educational benefits.
The position has evolved through interaction.
We are not yet at S4 integrated evaluation.
But the mechanism is clearly emerging.

This distinction helps keep calibration tight.
At S2:
Which interpretation should I choose?
At S3:
What happens to my interpretation after it encounters another interpretation?
That is a very different operation.
Selection can still be static.
Interaction is temporal.
The state changes.

Not every interaction creates opposition.
Suppose one student says:
Exercise improves concentration.
Another adds:
It may also reduce stress, which could indirectly improve learning.
The second contribution reinforces and expands the first.
Interaction may:

A Useful Interaction Vocabulary
Students can learn to identify moves such as:
AGREE
This supports the earlier position.
EXTEND
This adds something new.
QUALIFY
This limits the claim.
CHALLENGE
This disputes it.
CONCEDE
This accepts part of the opposing case.
REFRAME
This changes the way the problem is represented.
SYNTHESISE
This combines elements of more than one position.
These are not merely essay phrases.
They are interaction operations.
Oral English Becomes Especially Dynamic
Conversation gives Secondary 3 students a real-time interaction problem.
A prepared answer can be useful.
But discussion changes after another person’s contribution.
The student must listen.
Update.
Then respond.
Suppose the question is:
Should schools give students more freedom to use technology in class?
Student A gives a benefit.
Student B gives a risk.
A strong Student C does not simply deliver a memorised third point.
They might say:
I agree that technology can be distracting, but I think that actually supports the idea of controlled use rather than a total restriction.
That response depends on what came before.

A student cannot respond well if they are merely waiting for their turn to speak.
Interaction requires preserving another person’s representation long enough to modify one’s own.
That means listening has a more advanced function:

What did they say?

What does what they said require me to do next?

Comprehension Can Contain Interaction Too
Consider:

Question:
How does Marcus’s position change during the conversation?
The answer requires tracking:
initial resistance;
Nadia’s reasoning;
Marcus’s reconsideration;
final conditional agreement.
The meaning is distributed across interaction.
No single line contains the full answer.
Change Is the Evidence
A strong S3 reader notices:
before;
intervention;
after.
This gives us another useful model:

What did the person believe or do initially?

What happened to them?

How did they react?
STATE 2
What is different now?
This works across:
character development;
arguments;
conversations;
relationships;
writer positions.
Feedback Loops Can Escalate
Imagine:

The earlier Primary operation is still present, but inside a much more complex system.
That is exactly how developmental layering should look.
English Development Is Cumulative, Not Replaced
At Secondary 3, the learner still needs:
P1 observation;
P2 signal tracking;
P3 connection;
P4 inference;
P5 adaptation;
P6 coordination;
S1 differentiation;
S2 selection.
Interaction sits on top of all of them.
To understand a disagreement, the student must:
notice what each person says;
understand the signals;
connect them;
infer intention;
recognise different positions;
select relevant evidence;

The earlier layers remain active.
S3 adds:

A town is not simply infrastructure.

Infrastructure is changed because people respond.

The environment and population affect one another.
For S3 English, we do not need urban systems theory.

Admittedly, strict rules can reduce certain forms of misconduct. However, rules alone are unlikely to build responsible judgement if students never learn why the rules exist.
The writer accepts part of the opposing position.
Then adjusts the argument.
This shows control.
Secondary 3 Moves Towards Synthesis
Sometimes two apparently opposing positions can be combined.
Position A:
Technology improves access to information.
Position B:
Technology creates distraction.
Synthesis:
The real issue may not be technology itself but how its use is structured.
That is a representational upgrade.
The problem changes from:
technology: good or bad?
to:
under what conditions does technology improve learning?
Interaction has produced a new frame.
That becomes extremely important as students move towards S4 evaluation.
A New Answer Can Emerge From the Interaction
This is perhaps the deepest S3 fraction.
The final representation may not be:
A wins.
Or:
B wins.
It may be:
C.
A new answer created because A and B interacted.
That is structurally similar to systems in which interacting components produce properties that neither component possesses alone.
For English:
claim + challenge + revision
can produce:
a better claim.
Composition Can Also Produce Emergence
A writer begins with one plan.
Then a character’s earlier decision makes the planned ending feel unrealistic.
A strong writer notices this and changes the ending.
The internal story logic pushes back against the original plan.
The representation is now developing interactively.
This is a sign of stronger composition control.
The writer is listening to the system they created.
Plot Consequences Should Feed Back
Suppose a character lies.
The lie should change later conditions.
Perhaps:
another character believes it;
trust changes;
the character has to maintain the lie;
new evidence appears;
the lie becomes harder to sustain.
If the lie has no later effect, it may be narratively inert.
A good story often asks:
What did this action make different later?
That is feedback.
Interaction and Cause Are Not the Same
Primary 3 introduced cause and consequence.
S3 is more complex.
Simple causation:
A causes B.
Interaction:
A changes B.
B then changes A or affects C.
The causal chain loops or branches.

A useful question is:
How does the relationship between the two characters change over the passage?

final state.
The object of analysis is the relationship itself.
That is S3 territory.
Relationships Can Become Units of Meaning
At earlier levels, students may treat:

The relationship has its own properties.

The text provides new information.

If they refuse to update, comprehension becomes distorted.

The title suggests a character is irresponsible.
Later evidence reveals the character was protecting someone.
The student’s first model must change.
Strong reading is update-sensitive.
The Danger of Confirmation Lock
This connects with S2.
At S2, premature selection can lock the student into one interpretation.
At S3, the problem becomes failure to update after new information appears.
A learner decides:
This character is selfish.
Then ignores later evidence of sacrifice.
The representation becomes stale.
Strong S3 reading requires:
Maintain a model, but revise it when the text changes.
That is interaction between evidence and interpretation.
Models Need Versioning
We can express this simply.

Language is becoming explicitly relational.
Meaning is produced partly through contact among minds.

Look at the Secondary sequence.
S1 — VARIATION
Different forms exist.

Which form deserves weight?

How do forms change because they encounter one another?
There is a clear escalation:
difference;
choice;
dynamics.
This is a stronger progression than merely increasing text difficulty.
And S4 Is Now Becoming Visible
Once interaction produces changed representations, a final problem appears.
Which changes should be retained?
Did the revision improve the argument?
Which inherited assumptions should remain?
What should be discarded?
What new representation best integrates the evidence?
That will be S4.
But we do not move there yet.
S3’s job is to track the mechanism of change.

Give students:
Claim
Homework should be abolished because students already spend enough time in school.
Response
Without any homework, students may not have enough opportunity to practise independently.
Ask:
- What pressure does the response place on the first claim?
- What part of the claim is too broad?
- How could the first writer revise it?
Possible revision:
Excessive repetitive homework should be reduced, while targeted independent practice should remain where it clearly supports learning.
The student has not simply chosen one side.
The interaction created a better representation.
A Narrative Interaction Exercise
Start with:
A girl accidentally damages her friend’s phone.
Ask:
What does she do?
If she hides it:
How does the friend respond?
What does the girl do after that?
What new problem does her response create?
The class builds:
action → reaction → consequence → adjustment.
This produces genuine narrative structure.

Give a passage in which:

The issue is not necessarily vocabulary.
