Secondary 3 Principles of Accounts (POA) Tuition | Novena Weekday or Weekend Parent Dilemma

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

NOVENA · SECONDARY 3 · FAMILY LEARNING ROUTINES

Secondary 3 Principles of Accounts (POA) tuition in Novena should begin with the first uncertain decision in a marked question. A weekday can repair a trade-discount calculation. A weekend can connect a purchase, return and supplier settlement in a single clear sequence.

Bring the original attempt and current school materials. Check whether the uncertainty concerns the net purchase price, the return’s value or the balance being paid. Confirm actual POA provision before selecting a lesson slot.

An encouraging example is an $800 list-price credit purchase with a 25% trade discount. The recorded purchase is $600. If goods with a stated net invoice value of $150 are returned before payment, $450 remains payable. Following each event keeps the discount from being counted twice.

SECTION 1 OF 10

Find the first uncertain decision

Back to contents

A lesson needs a clear job. ‘Practise suppliers’ is broad; ‘record the purchase after a trade discount’ is a more useful starting point.

Bring the marked question and original attempt. A wrong settlement amount can begin with a misunderstood discount or return long before the payment entry.

Ask the student to describe the events in order. The list price, net invoice amount and later balance are different figures.

Confirm the school’s course, registered level and examination year when selecting materials.

A Novena search does not establish actual POA teaching. Confirm a provider’s provision and how it would address the observed need.

SECTION 2 OF 10

Follow purchase, return and settlement

Back to contents

Imagine a fictional trading business using perpetual inventory recording. It buys goods on credit with a list price of $800 and a 25% trade discount. Assume no tax, freight or other purchase cost.

The trade discount is $800 × 25% = $200. The net invoice amount is $800 − $200 = $600.

Record the purchase as debit Inventory $600 and credit Trade Payables $600. The net price, rather than the list price, is recorded.

Do not record the $200 trade discount separately as Discount Received. It has already reduced the purchase price.

Before paying, the business returns goods with a stated net invoice value of $150. This amount is already after the trade discount; no further discount calculation is needed on it.

Record the return as debit Trade Payables $150 and credit Inventory $150. The supplier obligation and goods held both decrease.

The balance owed becomes $600 − $150 = $450. Check that the returned $150 plus the remaining $450 equals the original net $600.

The business pays the full $450 directly from Bank. Assume there is no cash discount or other charge. Record debit Trade Payables $450 and credit Bank $450.

The supplier balance for these events clears to zero: $600 created − $150 return − $450 payment = $0.

With no sales or other inventory events, the net inventory added by this sequence is $450. The payment itself does not create another inventory purchase.

Now change the return’s stated net value to $120. The purchase remains $600 and the balance to settle becomes $480.

If a return is described at list value instead, read the discount conditions and calculate its appropriate net value. Do not silently treat every return figure as net.

These invented figures isolate the sequence. Actual questions may include cash discounts, partial settlement or other conditions requiring separate decisions.

SECTION 3 OF 10

Use a weekday to correct one base

Back to contents

A weekday can suit a student who records the $800 list price or subtracts the trade discount twice.

Label list price, trade discount and net invoice amount before selecting accounts.

Ask the student to explain why the recorded purchase is $600 and why the discount is not a separate income item.

Finish with one changed list price and an independent calculation.

Include energy after school, meals and travel when choosing an actual slot. Confirm weekday availability directly.

SECTION 4 OF 10

Use a weekend to connect the sequence

Back to contents

A weekend may suit linking the purchase, return and final payment.

Keep each event on its own line and update the supplier balance after it.

Ask which events change Inventory and which move Bank. That prevents duplicating the purchase at payment.

Pause before a fresh sequence without the worked example.

Keep the connected task proportionate and leave room for other subjects and recovery.

SECTION 5 OF 10

Read the value before using it

Back to contents

Identify whether each amount is list value, net invoice value or a balance already adjusted.

Calculate the net purchase amount using the stated trade discount.

Read the return’s basis and update the payable and inventory appropriately.

Establish the balance being settled and any qualifying cash-discount condition. This example has none.

Explain the account movements, check balanced entries and check the supplier’s final balance.

A correct subtraction can still use the wrong starting amount. Mark the first incorrect decision before repairing later lines.

SECTION 6 OF 10

Practise one condition at a time

Back to contents

Change the list price first while keeping the trade discount fixed.

Then change the net return amount and ask why the original purchase entry stays unchanged.

Compare a stated net return value with a stated list return value using suitable school materials.

Introduce cash discounts or partial settlement only with their explicit conditions. They should not be guessed from this simple example.

Revisit a fresh sequence after a gap. An independent explanation is useful evidence of retention.

SECTION 7 OF 10

Ask what individual feedback checks

Back to contents

Useful feedback checks discount type, value basis, event sequence and account movements.

If considering eduKate’s three-student format, confirm actual POA provision and how each student’s original work would be reviewed.

The format alone does not establish a Novena POA class. Ask directly about venue, slots, fees and arrangements.

Bring marked work so the enquiry begins with an observable need.

SECTION 8 OF 10

Match the syllabus to the student

Back to contents

Use the student’s registered level and examination year when selecting materials.

The SEAB 2027 G3 syllabus page links to POA coverage of trade payables, trade discounts, returns and payments.

For other courses or years, use the school-candidate syllabus directory to locate the appropriate document.

This is a teaching illustration, not an examination prediction. Follow current school guidance on presentation.

SECTION 9 OF 10

Review understanding and the routine

Back to contents

Ask for a fresh purchase-return-payment sequence without the original example.

Check the net purchase, return basis, entries and final supplier balance.

Look for clearer explanations and fewer repeated errors. Page counts alone do not establish understanding.

Review fatigue, travel and follow-up alongside accuracy. Adjust timing if it repeatedly undermines concentration.

SECTION 10 OF 10

Questions before choosing a lesson

Back to contents

Is the trade discount separate income here? No. It reduces the recorded purchase price.

Why not discount the $150 again? The example explicitly states that it is the return’s net invoice value.

Does payment create another purchase? No. It settles the existing payable.

Which day should we choose? Match the task to a workable time for attention and a later independent attempt.
