Did you know that Principles of Accounts asks students to explain business information as well as calculate it? POA concerns recording, processing and communicating accounting information for decisions. For 2027 SEC school candidates, G2 POA is K233 and G3 POA is K342.
Both levels have a one-hour Paper 1 worth 40% and a two-hour Paper 2 worth 60%. Their scenario-based requirements differ, so matching timings do not make the papers interchangeable. Check the exact syllabus level before choosing a practice set.

POA, Business and Economics are distinct examination subjects. Compare the latter two in Business versus Economics. Start with the student’s registered title and code rather than a broad interest in money or business.
Put the exact title, subject level, code and examination year on the learning record. Under Full SBB, a Posting Group does not identify every subject syllabus. Read Does Posting Group decide every subject level? if those labels still feel confusing.
Confirm the school’s actual offer, selection criteria and subject combination. Bring the subject-selection form and a recent piece of independent work to the conversation. This helps the teacher discuss both the available route and the student’s present learning needs.
A student entering Secondary 1 in 2027 should use the applicable teaching programme for that school year. The 2027 SEC examination syllabus refers to that examination cohort; check the correct graduating-year specification when it becomes available.
| Paper | G2 K233 | G3 K342 |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1h; 40 raw marks; 40% | 1h; 40 raw marks; 40% |
| Paper 2 | 2h; 60 raw marks; 60% | 2h; 60 raw marks; 60% |

Paper 1 has three to four compulsory structured questions. Paper 2 has four compulsory structured questions, including a 20-mark financial-statements question. G2 scenario contexts cover inventory, trade payables and trade receivables; G3 also includes non-current assets and business entities.

Use the exact specification when checking older resources. A familiar topic can still require a different task or response. Ask the teacher which questions remain suitable and which need to be replaced.
Begin with the teacher’s account of what the learner presently needs. Accurate arithmetic helps many tasks, but the child also needs to understand what a transaction means and communicate a reasoned explanation. A Mathematics result alone does not describe all of that.
Try a simple conversation about a fictional business buying something. Ask what changed and what information the business would need to record. Listen for careful reading and willingness to explain the event before rushing into a number.
This is a suggested discussion, not a POA selection test. Confirm the school’s actual criteria and available subject combinations. Bring independent work that shows how the student reads information, organises steps and checks a result.
If considering a later accountancy or business course, check that programme’s current admission requirements separately. A useful school subject and a compulsory entry subject are different questions.
Here is our illustrative practice transaction: the owner of a fictional business contributes $500 cash. Assume the business begins with no other balances. Cash increases by $500 and capital increases by $500; the contribution is not sales revenue.
Ask the student to explain why before writing an entry. The source of the cash matters. Now compare a second fictional event: the business buys $100 of equipment for cash. Cash decreases and equipment increases; total assets remain $500 in this simple example.
The arithmetic is short, but the interpretation carries the learning. Ask the student to connect each amount with the event it represents. Use the account names and recording methods taught by the teacher.
Next, change the example to a purchase on credit and ask what further concept is needed. If the learner cannot explain the change, return to its meaning before adding more transactions. These examples are independent practice, not official specimen questions.
Practise one transaction explanation, one teacher-approved recording task and one short decision question. Check each at a different level: meaning, method, arithmetic and interpretation.
Keep corrections specific. “Careless mistake” offers little direction. Record whether the difficulty involved an account name, a classification, a calculation or the explanation of a result. Then reattempt a fresh transaction.
For scenario practice, connect a reason with evidence from the question and the effect on the proposed decision. A general advantage copied from another answer may not fit the business in front of the student.
When work seems to balance, still check its meaning. Numerical agreement alone cannot establish that every classification is appropriate. For planning across subjects, return to the elective comparison guide.
