SECONDARY 4 · ANG MO KIO · FAMILY ROUTINES
Secondary 4 Principles of Accounts (POA) tuition in Ang Mo Kio should turn revision into a sequence of decisions the student can explain. A weekday may suit one focused correction. A weekend may suit a connected question and review, provided the student has enough attention left to learn from it.
Match materials to the actual examination year and registered subject level. Then identify the first unreliable step in marked work. Selecting a depreciation method, calculating a charge, recording it and explaining its effect are connected tasks, but each can need a different correction.
Did you know that recording depreciation does not itself make money leave the bank? A simplified straight-line example separates an asset’s cost, the period’s depreciation expense and accumulated depreciation. That distinction gives revision a concrete target beyond memorising a formula.

Weekday or weekend: compare the routine
| Decision point | Weekday | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Learning purpose | Correct a recent misunderstanding. | Connect events, balances and explanations. |
| Attention | Allow food, travel and settling time after school. | Check energy around CCA, family plans and other lessons. |
| Follow-up | Leave a later short independent variation. | Leave a later return after a pause. |

Questions and the next step
Depreciation questions can go wrong before the entry is written. Locate the first unreliable decision in the student’s marked work.
Reading the method, identifying the cost and counting the period are different from calculating the charge or updating accumulated depreciation.
Ask the student to explain what is being allocated and over which period.
Choose revision that addresses the actual difficulty, then tests the corrected method independently.
A lesson slot is useful when the student can attend carefully and still use the feedback afterwards.
A fictional business owns equipment costing $2,400. The question requires straight-line depreciation at 20% of cost per year.
Assume the equipment is held for two complete reporting years, there is no disposal, impairment or other adjustment, and depreciation has not been recorded before the first year.
The annual charge is $480: 20% × $2,400. The cost basis stays $2,400 under the stated straight-line method.
The first year’s entry is debit Depreciation Expense—Equipment $480 and credit Accumulated Depreciation—Equipment $480, using the account naming required by the course.
After the first year, accumulated depreciation is $480 and carrying amount is $1,920: cost of $2,400 less accumulated depreciation of $480.
The second year’s charge is also $480 under these conditions. Accumulated depreciation becomes $960 and carrying amount becomes $1,440.
Recording the depreciation charge does not itself involve a new bank payment. It allocates the asset’s cost through an expense and accumulated depreciation.
Do not apply 20% to $1,920 in year two for this stated method. That uses a different base from the required percentage of cost.
If the first year’s depreciation were omitted, expense would be understated by $480, profit overstated by $480 and the equipment’s carrying amount overstated by $480, other matters unchanged.
This example uses a rate on cost. Read each actual question for its method, useful life or residual-value instructions, period policy and any separate adjustments.

A weekday can suit a focused contrast between the required cost base and an incorrectly chosen carrying amount.
Bring the original question and the student’s calculation. Identify the instruction that should have selected the base.
Allow food and settling time after school so the student can read the conditions carefully.
Ask for the annual charge, then an explanation of why the base stays the same in the stated example.
Leave a later independent variation with different cost or rate. A correct copied answer is only the beginning.
If the evening repeatedly prevents careful follow-up, reduce the task or move the lesson.

A weekend can provide room to trace the charge across two years and connect it to the final carrying amount.
Keep cost, annual expense and accumulated depreciation in separate labelled lines. Their relationship should remain visible.
Ask the student to explain why accumulated depreciation grows while the equipment cost remains unchanged in this example.
Pause before a fresh question. Returning to the method shows whether the student can retrieve it without immediate prompts.
A timed task is useful when the underlying reasoning is secure and review identifies the first error.
Preserve rest and other commitments. Revision needs a manageable place in the whole week.

Read the required method and base. Do not assume every depreciation question uses the same rule.
Identify the relevant period and any policy for acquisition or disposal timing. The example deliberately uses complete years.
Calculate the period’s depreciation using the stated instructions.
Write the expense and accumulated depreciation entry, then explain what each side represents.
Update accumulated depreciation across the applicable periods. Do not replace the cumulative amount with just this year’s charge.
Subtract accumulated depreciation from cost to find carrying amount in the simplified example.
Check the result against the conditions and distinguish recording depreciation from the separate event of paying for an asset.

If the student uses carrying amount under the stated rate-on-cost method, return to the words selecting the base.
If they confuse annual and accumulated depreciation, compare the current year’s charge with the charges already recorded.
If they credit bank for depreciation, ask what payment took place when the expense was recorded.
If they subtract only one year’s charge after two years, trace the cumulative balance before calculating carrying amount.
If the calculation is right but the effect on profit is wrong, connect the depreciation charge to expense.
Vary one condition at a time. Combine method and period decisions only after the simpler reasoning is secure.
Keep the correction note specific enough to guide the next attempt, such as ‘identify base before applying rate’.

School confirms registration and assessment arrangements. Its marked feedback helps identify immediate revision priorities.
The example illustrates a stated straight-line rate on cost. Use the actual question’s method and conditions.

Agree on a clear aim: select the base, calculate the charge and connect it to accumulated depreciation and carrying amount.
At a later point, change cost or rate and ask the student to work without supplied steps.
Check the explanation as well as the answer. A memorised number is weaker evidence than a correctly selected method.
Use the first remaining error to choose the next practice task.
Review travel, homework, sleep and recovery alongside learning. Keep the routine when it supports both.

Does depreciation mean money leaves bank each year? Recording the charge itself does not create a bank payment in this example.
Is annual depreciation the same as accumulated depreciation? The annual charge is for one period; accumulated depreciation includes the charges recorded to date.
Is carrying amount a guaranteed resale price? It is an accounting amount from the stated cost and accumulated depreciation, not a promise about a sale.
Which day should we choose? Select the slot that supports the identified correction and a later independent attempt.
Use the POA subject guide for a starting point.
Bring the marked work and actual examination route. Ask for a targeted next task and a review point, then confirm provision and arrangements.
