Should I Take H2 Chemistry in JC?

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Take H2 Chemistry if you want to understand chemical ideas in greater depth, or if it is required for a course you are seriously considering, and you can meet the JC’s subject conditions. Check both readiness and the whole combination. A required subject deserves a realistic preparation plan, not simply a box ticked on an application.

Did you know? ACJC’s current Chemistry overview connects core ideas with extension topics including organic compounds and transition elements. The subject asks students to connect explanations across topics. Remembering individual reactions is useful only when you also understand how to apply the ideas.

Before deciding, inspect sample work and discuss your secondary Chemistry foundation with a teacher. Ask about written and practical assessment for the correct examination year. Verify university prerequisites on the university’s own current course page rather than assuming every science-related degree has the same requirements.

Guidance checked on 10 October 2026. Confirm arrangements and requirements with the school or university for the intended intake, admission cohort and examination year.

PART 1 OF 4

Explore the deeper explanations

Back to contents

Think about a familiar question: why does a substance behave differently from another? Chemistry asks you to connect observations with models and explanations. Interest in that connection can help you decide whether the subject’s work appeals to you.

Read an accessible introduction to a JC topic and note where it builds on your secondary knowledge. Ask a teacher what changes in depth and what students commonly need to revisit.

Treat unfamiliarity as information, not a verdict. A topic can be new and interesting, but the choice should include willingness to practise explanations and revise the ideas that support them.

Check readiness beyond the grade

Back to contents

Look at how you handle chemical terminology, equations, calculations and unfamiliar applications. A single overall result can hide different strengths. Ask which foundations are secure and which need deliberate attention.

Find out what practical lessons require and how students learn to record observations and interpret results. CJC’s current H1/H2 comparison notes differences in practical assessment. Use the applicable syllabus rather than assuming the two levels differ only in content volume.

Plan regular practice and time to review feedback. A realistic routine is more helpful than expecting to fix several foundational gaps during a last-minute revision period.

PART 3 OF 4

Confirm the school and pathway requirements

Back to contents

CJC publishes indicative guidance for H2 Chemistry that includes standalone Chemistry and Combined Science with Chemistry. The page explains that these indicative grades reflect previous cohorts; they should not be treated as a universal guaranteed threshold.

Confirm your intended college’s rules for the entry year and exact combination. Taking one H2 science and taking a double-H2 science combination may raise different conditions. Ask specifically rather than generalising from another student’s timetable.

The JC subject-combination guide helps review the full set. Check university course prerequisites separately and record the date of the information.

PART 4 OF 4

Make a supported decision

Back to contents

Try a school-provided introductory question and discuss the reasoning with a teacher. Notice whether you enjoy improving the explanation, not only whether you get the first answer right.

Compare H2 Chemistry with the available alternatives while keeping required subjects in view. If you need it for a future route but feel underprepared, ask for a specific bridge plan and assess whether the workload is workable.

The eduKateSG Careers by Subject hub offers broader exploration. Choose H2 Chemistry with a clear purpose, confirmed requirements and a preparation plan you can sustain.
