Yes. A complete sentence may begin with And or But when the conjunction clearly connects the new sentence to the idea before it. The opening word is not automatically a grammar error.
The real checks are completeness, logic and register. “But I changed my mind.” can be complete in context. “But because the bus was late.” is only a fragment unless the sentence continues with a main clause. A school task may also prefer a more formal or varied transition.
Try this now: place a full stop after “The forecast promised sunshine”. Add “But the rain began before noon.” Ask your child what contrast But signals and whether the second sentence can stand on its own.
What this guide helps you do
1. Separate grammar from a classroom shortcut
The Chicago Manual of Style’s usage guidance accepts beginning a sentence with But. The old classroom warning can still serve a teaching purpose for beginners who produce fragments or string every sentence together, but it is not a universal rule of English grammar.
And can add or continue; But can contrast, qualify or redirect. At the start of a sentence, each still needs a clear relationship with what came before.
| Opening | Useful job | Example |
| And | add a connected point | The team checked the figures. And they tested the units. |
| But | introduce contrast | The method was quick. But it was not accurate. |
| No conjunction | state directly | The method was not accurate. |
2. Check that the new sentence is complete
The safest test is to ignore the opening conjunction for a moment. Do the remaining words contain a complete independent clause? “But the rain began” does. “But after the rain” does not.
- Complete: And the class repeated the experiment.
- Complete: But the second trial gave a different result.
- Fragment: And after the second trial.
- Fragment: But because the timer stopped.
Original teaching illustration: cover And or But with a small card. If the words left behind form a complete sentence and the conjunction adds a real link to the previous idea, the opening can work.

3. Use punctuation without adding a reflex comma
Do not add a comma immediately after And or But merely because the word begins the sentence. Write “But the answer was incomplete,” not “But, the answer was incomplete.”
A comma may appear for another reason, such as an interrupting phrase: “But, after checking the diagram again, Maya changed her answer.” The pair of commas belongs to the interrupting phrase.
Compare that with a conjunction joining two independent clauses in one sentence: “Maya checked the diagram, but she kept her original answer.” Here the comma comes before but because it helps join the two clauses.

4. Choose the right register and rhythm
Correct grammar does not guarantee good style. Beginning several consecutive sentences with And or But can sound repetitive. In formal exposition, a writer may prefer a direct sentence or a precise transition such as however, in addition or by contrast—provided the punctuation and meaning are also correct.
In narrative writing, an opening But can create emphasis or a turn. In an examination response, clarity and control matter more than proving that a disputed construction is technically possible. Follow the task, the intended audience and any specific teacher instruction.
The editing question is therefore: does this opening make the relationship clearer, or is it only a habit?

5. Make tuition practice show independent control
A useful diagnostic gives the learner four cases: one effective opening, one fragment, one repetitive paragraph and one sentence that should be joined instead. The child must choose, repair and explain.
Practice should move from recognising complete clauses to writing a connected paragraph. A tutor can track whether the child varies openings, signals the right logic and checks sentence completeness without being prompted.
For Secondary English, support should match the student’s actual subject level and assessed task. Posting Group does not by itself name the level of every subject. From 2027, the SEC certificate records the subjects and levels actually sat.

A calm next step
Bring a paragraph in which And or But has been corrected. In a verified 3-pax setting, the tutor can compare the intended meaning with the marker’s concern, test clause completeness and practise two alternative rewrites.
Ask eduKate about a diagnosis-first English lesson. The aim is controlled choice and clearer writing, not a guaranteed grade.
