The Gold Standard · Archaeology
Make the decision path visible
A mirror may be repaired after it stripped a citation condition, yet the appeal cannot be decided from a green synchronisation report alone. Search results, citation exports, resolvers and teaching copies may still carry the broader claim that triggered re-withdrawal.
The gold standard verifies the complete reader journey, tests the archaeological proposition against the named version and reinstates only the wording and uses whose evidence, notices and propagation controls are ready.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · FRAME THE APPEAL
1. Restate the conditional re-withdrawal
Record the exact secondary proposition, source version, missing condition, affected mirrors, resolver and export routes, withdrawal wording and unaffected historical or methods uses. Preserve the date and evidence that triggered action.
An appeal must answer the bounded decision rather than argue that the underlying excavation or publication remains valuable in general.
CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · FRAME THE APPEAL
2. Define what repair must achieve
A repair must make the supported version, current status, uncertainty, replacement and permitted wording visible through normal reader routes. Database equality is not enough when a cache, citation manager or teaching export changes meaning.
Name the observation window and propagation cycles required before reinstatement. A route that is correct once immediately after manual correction may still fail at the next scheduled import.
Evidence check
Check whether the scope, owner and decision consequence are explicit before continuing.
CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · FRAME THE APPEAL
3. Predefine secondary citation reinstatement criteria
Require proposition-level evidential support, correct version relationships, durable notices, accurate exports, representative mirror convergence and a correction route for residual users. Identify uses that remain withdrawn.
Criteria should be set before reviewers see a preferred result. Otherwise a successful technical repair can quietly lower the archaeological threshold.
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Proposition | Exact wording |
| Version | Named source |
| Reason | Missing condition |
| Scope | Affected routes |
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · VERIFY MIRROR REPAIR
4. Reconstruct every material reader journey
Test search result, repository landing page, DOI resolver, mirror page, downloadable metadata, bibliography export and citation-manager import. Record the version, status and wording visible at each step.
Include direct links saved before correction and a fresh discovery route. Readers often reach an older mirror without passing through the current repository landing page.
CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · VERIFY MIRROR REPAIR
5. Verify graph and notice consistency
Check IsNewVersionOf and IsPreviousVersionOf direction, canonical-to-version relationships, withdrawal and replacement notices, dates and source identifiers. Confirm that machine-readable export and human-readable page tell the same story.
A graph can be internally valid yet point a reader toward a version that does not support the appealed proposition. Semantic direction and archaeological meaning must both be reviewed.
Evidence check
Ask a second reviewer to reconstruct the example from the preserved evidence and stated assumptions.
CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · VERIFY MIRROR REPAIR
6. Worked example: one export still drops the condition
A repaired mirror preserves the version link and conditional notice through two synchronisation cycles. Search and DOI routes are correct, but a teaching bibliography export still omits the unresolved construction-phase warning.
The panel reinstates direct repository citation for the measured span estimate but keeps the teaching export withdrawn until its template is fixed. Changed-context check: a historical review may discuss the earlier broad claim when it labels the superseded status and does not present it as current evidence.
| Journey | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Search | Current status |
| Resolver | Correct version |
| Export | Condition retained |
| Manager | Meaning preserved |
CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · DECIDE REINSTATEMENT SCOPE
7. Reassess the archaeological proposition itself
Confirm what observation, model and uncertainty support the requested wording today. Technical convergence cannot reinstate a claim weakened by new dating, stratigraphic evidence or a corrected measurement.
Keep measured fact, bridge-model inference and construction-phase interpretation separate. A supported span estimate does not automatically restore the full sequence narrative.
CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · DECIDE REINSTATEMENT SCOPE
8. Choose the narrowest reinstatement outcome
Options include full confirmation of bounded wording, route-specific reinstatement, corrected citation, historical-only use or continued conditional withdrawal. State the version, proposition, required notice and excluded uses.
A partial outcome is not indecision. It aligns access with the routes and meanings that have actually been verified.
Evidence check
Verify that the control still reaches the intended decision under a changed but plausible context.
CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · DECIDE REINSTATEMENT SCOPE
9. Repair residual secondary copies proportionately
Notify materially affected authors, repositories and teaching owners with the exact corrected proposition and version. Replace stale exports where controlled, while preserving prior versions and correction history.
Do not demand deletion of unaffected analysis. The goal is to stop unsupported present reliance and make the change discoverable without erasing scholarly development.
| Outcome | Use |
|---|---|
| Confirm | Bounded claim |
| Route-specific | Verified path |
| Historical | Superseded labelled |
| Withdraw | Unsupported wording |
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · STABILISE THE RECORD
10. Exercise recurrence and rollback
Run another synchronisation, restore a mirror backup, clear representative caches and re-import citation files. Confirm that status, version and condition remain intact and that a failed route can be re-withdrawn quickly.
A repaired system is dependable only when maintenance and recovery do not restore the stripped notice or reverse the version relation.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · STABILISE THE RECORD
11. State limits and common misconceptions
No test finds every offline bibliography, screenshot or local citation database. Reinstatement describes sampled routes and current evidence; it does not certify that every reader received correction.
Conditional re-withdrawal is not a finding of misconduct. Mirror failure, author reliance and archaeological support are distinct questions that may require different remedies.
Evidence check
Confirm that versions, notices and unresolved limits remain visible in the final record.
CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · STABILISE THE RECORD
12. Monitor propagation and wording expansion
Track mirror freshness, resolver targets, relation direction, export templates, search snippets and new secondary wording. Reopen review when a condition disappears, a broad claim returns or the supported version changes.
Close when representative reader journeys preserve the bounded meaning, the appealed citation use is clear and residual users have a practical correction route.
| Signal | Response |
|---|---|
| Notice lost | Re-withdraw route |
| Graph reversed | Repair relation |
| Export stale | Replace template |
| Claim expands | Contact user |
Frequently asked questions
Does mirror synchronisation prove a claim may be reinstated?
No. It proves a technical state only; the proposition, version, uncertainty and reader meaning still require review.
Can reinstatement apply to one route only?
Yes. Route-specific reinstatement is appropriate when that journey is verified and another material route remains misleading.
Must historical citations be removed?
No. Preserve them with their date and superseded status when they document scholarly history rather than current support.
What makes mirror repair durable?
Correct graph relations, notices and exports that survive repeated synchronisation, cache clearing, recovery and representative reader journeys.
