The Gold Standard · Archaeology
Make the decision path visible
A citation may be reinstated for a narrow proposition, named version and visible uncertainty. Later, one mirror drops the condition, another keeps the withdrawal banner and a citation feed points to an older replacement. The same source now carries three practical meanings.
The gold standard reconstructs what each reader route displays, separates author reliance from present evidential support and conditionally re-withdraws only the affected use while the graph and notices are repaired.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · FRAME THE DRIFT REVIEW
1. Restate the reinstatement decision
Record the exact proposition, version, evidence, uncertainty, citation wording, reader notice and routes covered by reinstatement. Include uses that remained withdrawn or historical only.
Review drift against this bounded decision. A broad label such as citation restored can conceal the condition that made restoration responsible.
CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · FRAME THE DRIFT REVIEW
2. Define reinstatement-review drift
Compare current secondary wording, repository status, mirror labels, resolver targets and citation exports with the decision. Drift is material when a normal route permits a broader or different claim.
An unchanged DOI does not guarantee unchanged meaning. Version, relation and notice together determine the claim a reader is likely to carry forward.
Evidence check
Check whether the scope, owner and decision consequence are explicit before continuing.
CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · FRAME THE DRIFT REVIEW
3. Predefine conditional re-withdrawal triggers
Trigger re-withdrawal when conditions disappear, mirrors diverge materially, evidence changes, the cited wording expands or correction cannot reach important routes within the agreed window.
Name the smallest affected proposition and route. Conditional re-withdrawal should protect present use without deleting unaffected observations or honest historiography.
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Proposition | Exact wording |
| Version | Named source |
| Condition | Visible limit |
| Use | Allowed context |
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · TRACE MIRROR DIVERGENCE
4. Reconstruct the reader journeys
Capture repository landing pages, mirror snapshots, resolver results, export files, cache dates and citation-manager records. Follow each from search result to the sentence a secondary author is likely to cite.
The practical status may differ from the database field if a banner is hidden, a resolver jumps to another version or an export omits the condition.
CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · TRACE MIRROR DIVERGENCE
5. Compare divergence by consequence
Classify whether routes disagree about version, current status, permitted wording, uncertainty or replacement. Measure how the difference changes a material interpretation rather than counting cosmetic discrepancies.
A mirror that formats the same bounded notice differently may be acceptable. A mirror that removes the uncertainty or presents a historical claim as current is not.
Evidence check
Ask a second reviewer to reconstruct the example from the preserved evidence and stated assumptions.
CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · TRACE MIRROR DIVERGENCE
6. Worked example: a mirror strips the reinstatement condition
A bridge-model citation is reinstated only for a measured span estimate and must retain a warning that the construction phase is unresolved. A mirror imports the DOI but drops the warning, and a review article treats the entire bridge sequence as confirmed.
The repository conditionally re-withdraws that secondary wording while the mirror and article are corrected. Changed-context check: a methods paper may retain the citation when it discusses how span estimates were calculated and explicitly preserves the unresolved construction-phase status.
| Route | Check |
|---|---|
| Landing page | Status visible |
| Resolver | Correct version |
| Export | Condition retained |
| Citation manager | Meaning preserved |
CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · APPLY CONDITIONAL RE-WITHDRAWAL
7. Choose the narrowest re-withdrawal outcome
Confirm unaffected uses, withdraw the expanded proposition, require corrected wording or route the citation to the supported version. State whether the action is temporary pending propagation or evidentially final.
Do not punish a reasonable author for a route failure, but do not let procedural fairness substitute for current archaeological support.
CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · APPLY CONDITIONAL RE-WITHDRAWAL
8. Repair graph, notice and export together
Correct relation direction, landing-page status, mirror mapping, resolver target and citation export. Preserve earlier versions and the reinstatement history so the sequence remains auditable.
A notice-only fix will drift again if the generating feed still omits the condition on the next synchronisation.
Evidence check
Verify that the control still reaches the intended decision under a changed but plausible context.
CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · APPLY CONDITIONAL RE-WITHDRAWAL
9. Notify secondary users proportionately
Contact materially affected authors, repositories or teaching routes with the exact proposition, version and corrected use. Keep a public status route for readers outside direct control.
Avoid demanding removal of unaffected claims. Clear, bounded correction improves compliance and preserves legitimate scholarly context.
| Outcome | Condition |
|---|---|
| Confirm | Bounded use |
| Correct | Wording drift |
| Re-withdraw | Unsupported claim |
| Historical | Past use labelled |
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · STABILISE CITATION STATUS
10. Exercise a conditional status change
Issue a controlled bounded change, run exports and mirror imports, clear representative caches and test search, resolver and citation-manager journeys. Confirm that the condition remains visible through each route.
Include a maintenance or recovery cycle because divergence often returns when an older feed or mapping is restored.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · STABILISE CITATION STATUS
11. State limits and common misconceptions
Status consistency does not validate archaeological inference, and a conditional re-withdrawal does not prove misconduct. It records what current evidence and routes can responsibly support.
No review can locate every offline bibliography. State the routes, dates, languages and citation formats sampled and the residual dissemination risk.
Evidence check
Confirm that versions, notices and unresolved limits remain visible in the final record.
CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · STABILISE CITATION STATUS
12. Monitor status divergence and wording expansion
Track mirror freshness, notice presence, relation direction, resolver targets and new secondary claims. Reopen review when conditions disappear or a bounded reinstatement is cited as full confirmation.
The gold standard closes when materially used routes carry the same bounded meaning and affected authors have a practical correction path.
| Test | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Sync | No lost condition |
| Cache | Current notice |
| Search | Correct route |
| Secondary use | Bounded wording |
Frequently asked questions
What is reinstatement-review drift?
It is divergence between the conditions under which a citation was reinstated and the meaning or status displayed later.
What is conditional re-withdrawal?
It removes a specific unsupported present use while preserving unaffected observations, versions and historical discussion.
Does mirror failure make the author responsible?
Not automatically. It affects remedy and attribution, but current wording still needs current evidence.
What stabilises citation status?
Compatible graph relations, notices, resolvers and exports tested through the reader journeys that people actually use.
