The most important device response may be the one staff rarely practise
A clinician operates a device confidently every day but has never encountered a particular critical fault. Rare-event drills help teams prepare for unusual, consequential situations using safe simulation and approved procedures.
Choose scenarios by risk
Select events based on potential harm, device characteristics and relevant incident learning.
Use realistic conditions
Include communication, competing tasks and equipment limitations where appropriate.
Define roles and escalation
Participants should know who assesses, who responds and how backup support is activated.
Keep drills safe
Use controlled training environments that do not compromise patient care or equipment availability.
Debrief decisions
Review reasoning, communication and system factors rather than only the speed of response.
Verify learning
Repeat or vary scenarios to test whether staff can apply the response independently.
Break-test: the primary responder is unavailable
Can the team activate the authorised alternative route without losing responsibility?
