A polymer mechanism-map ensemble is useful because it keeps plausible explanations visible where process decisions disagree. It should not remain open forever, but collapsing it to one version merely because one map is convenient creates false certainty. The defensible moment to collapse is when fresh evidence removes decision-relevant alternatives across the intended process window, the winning version survives reserved-lot checks and the archive preserves a route to reopen if later evidence crosses a declared boundary.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
1. Define what ensemble collapse means
Collapse changes governance, not nature. One version becomes the operational map for a stated domain; retired alternatives remain archived with the evidence that removed them.
Specify whether collapse concerns prediction, mechanism interpretation or production action. Several mechanisms may remain scientifically plausible even when they support the same safe operating decision.
CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
2. Predeclare decision-relevant criteria
Require adequate reserved-lot prediction, chemical plausibility, reproducibility and stable production actions under plausible measurement error. A single best score is insufficient.
Set the material disagreement threshold before examining the final confirmation set. The threshold should reflect process loss, product specification and the resolution of the measurements.
CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
3. Build an ensemble-collapse register
A coating programme reviews three map versions after a targeted humidity experiment.
| Version | Reserved-lot error | Decision disagreements | Mechanism check | Governance state |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M4.0 | 7.8% | 3 of 12 | Plausible | Retire from production |
| M4.1 | 4.2% | 0 of 12 | Plausible | Champion candidate |
| M4.2 | 5.1% | 1 of 12 | Fails spectroscopy check | Retire |
| M4.1 sensitivity band | 6.0% worst case | 0 of 12 | Plausible | Retain as uncertainty envelope |
Retirement reasons remain version-specific. Poor prediction, failed chemistry and domain mismatch should not be merged into one generic failure label.
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
4. Worked retirement and release decision
The line evaluates M4.1 at four temperature–moisture settings. Release requires defect risk below 12% after adding the declared measurement allowance.
| Setting | Predicted risk | Allowance | Decision risk | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30°C, dry | 4% | 2 points | 6% | Release |
| 38°C, moderate | 7% | 3 points | 10% | Release |
| 42°C, humid | 9% | 4 points | 13% | Conditional trial |
| 48°C, humid | 15% | 5 points | 20% | Exclude from domain |
The conditional trial generates new evidence without silently extending routine production authority.
CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
5. Retire versions without deleting history
Store immutable map code, parameter sets, preprocessing, lot assignments, residuals, mechanism notes and the decision that ended operational use. A retired version must be reconstructable.
Remove retired versions from automatic production selection. Analysts may replay them, but any return to live influence requires a named reopening path.
CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
6. Set reopening triggers before surprise arrives
Useful triggers include persistent residual structure, a new material grade, changed analytical method, a spectroscopy signature the champion cannot explain or a production reversal near a boundary.
A trigger opens review; it does not automatically revive a retired map. Compare the new evidence with archived predictions and decide whether to revise the champion, restore an ensemble or create a new version family.
CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
7. Changed-context transfer: biodegradable blend
Transfer the method to a biodegradable blend whose moisture uptake changes after a supplier modifies molecular-weight distribution. The old ensemble agreed inside the virgin-material window.
The transfer check treats the supplier change as a new domain. It reopens structural uncertainty, reserves new lots for confirmation and prevents the collapsed map from claiming support it never earned.
CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
8. Connect ensemble decisions and version lineage
Begin with map-version ensembles and disagreement regions. Use the reopened-map adjudication guide when new evidence revives a structural question.
Return to locked-map monitoring and reopening triggers for routine surveillance after collapse.
CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
9. Limits and common misconceptions
A collapsed ensemble is not proof that the winning mechanism is uniquely true. It means alternatives no longer change the declared operational claim under current evidence.
Retirement is not deletion, and reopening is not failure. Both are normal controls in a living measurement-and-model system.
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
10. Practical evidence checklist
Archive member definitions, entry rules, weights, disagreement regions, reserved lots, analytical protocols, acceptance thresholds and decision-loss assumptions.
At collapse, save the winning version, sensitivity envelope, retired-version reasons, release domain, conditional regions, reopen triggers, reviewer and effective date.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE
11. Frequently asked questions
Must all alternatives be falsified before collapse?
No. They must cease to be decision-relevant within the intended domain under the declared evidence standard.
Can a retired map remain in research use?
Yes, if its research role is labelled and separated from production authority.
What evidence should reopen the ensemble?
Evidence that crosses a predeclared scientific or operational trigger, not a single unexplained residual chosen after inspection.
