A service-level report can hide unusable data
A sensor supplier reports 99% network availability, but many readings are stale or inaccurate. The gold standard of service-level verification tests whether the contracted performance supports the actual monitoring purpose.
Define the service outcome
Availability, data completeness, measurement quality and maintenance response may each matter.
Use independent evidence where appropriate
System logs, calibration records and field checks can validate reported performance.
Distinguish connectivity from usable observations
A device may be online while sending invalid or repeated measurements.
Account for exclusions fairly
Planned maintenance, extreme conditions and contractual exceptions should be interpreted according to the agreed terms.
Verify corrective action
A resolved support ticket should correspond to restored reliable measurement.
Review recurring problems
Repeated service failures may reveal inadequate maintenance, design or contract incentives.
Break-test: uptime meets target but the dataset cannot support a study
Does governance identify the mismatch between service metrics and the real objective?
