Did You Know? The School Began in 1939
Chung Cheng High School was founded in 1939 at 60 Kim Yam Road. It ceased operations during the Japanese Occupation and reopened in 1945. As enrolment grew, a large site at Goodman Road was acquired for the campus that became Chung Cheng High School (Main).
In 1979, the school was selected as one of the nine original SAP schools, strengthening its role in bilingual and bicultural education. In 1996, it gained Autonomous School status, giving it more room to innovate in curriculum design.
Heritage You Can Walk Through
The school’s Entrance Arch and Zhulin Building were gazetted as national monuments in 2014. In 2025, the refurbished Grand Auditorium reopened during a combined anniversary celebration involving the Chung Cheng family and Nanyang Junior College.
This gives students an unusual relationship with history. Heritage is not somewhere else; it is part of the environment they move through every day.
Bicultural Education: Roots and Bridges
Chung Cheng’s Bicultural Education Programme includes Appreciation of Chinese Culture, calligraphy, Chinese painting, tea art, overseas immersion to China, local heritage journeys and docent training.
Importantly, local cultural learning also includes the Malay Heritage Centre and Indian Heritage Centre. That makes the programme broader than preserving one tradition. It develops the ability to stay rooted while understanding other communities.
CLEP-Sec: Language at Greater Depth
The Chinese Language Elective Programme at Secondary Level is offered to students taking Chinese Literature or Chinese Literature (Elective). Activities include literary lectures, drama appreciation, cultural experiences, camps and immersion.
This is advanced bilingual learning in the proper sense. Students are not only trying to avoid language mistakes; they are learning to interpret literature, culture and meaning with greater precision.
The 2026 Applied Learning Programme: Dive or Discover
Chung Cheng’s two-year Applied Learning Programme develops upper-secondary students’ communication and problem-solving through non-examinable, hands-on learning. Starting in 2026, participating students choose between two tracks.
- Dive lets students focus deeply on one core capability, such as Public Speaking or Service Learning through Design Thinking.
- Discover gives broader exposure across communication and problem-solving modules.
The distinction is educationally useful. Some students need depth; others are still discovering where their strongest interests lie.
CREATE: The Bridge to Real-World Learning
In the graduating year, the programme uses the CREATE framework: Cross-Cultural Learning, Real-World Exposure, Exploration of Interests, Applied Opportunities, Transformative Projects and Experiential Engagement.
Students can encounter work attachments, overseas experiences, specialised modules, competitions, advocacy and self-directed projects. The test is no longer only whether the student knows something, but whether they can use it when the situation is not neatly prepared.
Music: From Broad Exposure to Enhanced Music
Lower-secondary Music develops listening, performing and creating through instruments, ensemble work and digital composition. Students with stronger interest can enter the Music Special Programme and later the Enhanced Music Programme, progressing toward Music or Higher Music at upper secondary.
This is a strong talent-development structure: give many students meaningful exposure, then create deeper ladders for those whose interest survives sustained practice.
Humanities and Science: Investigation Before Conclusion
Lower-secondary students conduct Geographical and Historical Investigations, while Social Studies later uses Issue Investigation. Science includes a Biodiversity Enrichment Programme in which students identify species, collect data and share findings.
These programmes share one important habit: do not jump straight to the answer. Investigate first.
Character and Citizenship: Leadership Grows in Complexity
Chung Cheng’s CCE curriculum develops students through Values and Leadership Education, National Education, VIA, CCAs and everyday school life. Lower-secondary outcomes include managing self, relating to others, serving the immediate community and understanding the nation. Upper-secondary students move toward self-mastery, inspiring others, serving the community and committing to the nation.
