What is so Awesome About North Vista Secondary School | 2026-2027 Edition

Three secondary students review textbooks and notes together at a classroom table.

Did you know that North Vista Secondary School’s current Applied Learning Programme uses food sustainability to connect Science, technology, design and Singapore’s future?

Its 2026 Farm-to-Table Programme gives students a real-world context for thinking about food security, sustainable farming and technology.

Its Learning for Life Programme then takes a very different medium — photography and videography — and uses it to develop perspective, empathy, communication and school values.

That combination is what makes North Vista Secondary interesting.

Grow something.

Document something.

Understand somebody else.

Then learn to lead with heart, head and hand.

So what is so awesome about North Vista Secondary School?

It is the way the school connects sustainability, creativity and servant leadership inside one Vistarian experience.

Independent eduKateSG profile checked on 4 October 2026. This is not a ranking or school-endorsed publication. Programme details can change; families should use current school and MOE information for cohort-specific decisions.

The Quick Answer: What Makes North Vista Secondary School Stand Out?

  • Farm-to-Table is the 2026 ALP theme. Students connect sustainable farming, food security and STEM to Singapore’s Green Plan context.
  • Photography and videography anchor the LLP. Students learn perspective, communication and empathy through creative media.
  • Student leadership is built around servant leadership. Head, Heart and Hand create a memorable developmental model.
  • The school vision is clear. Vistarians of Character who Learn, Strive and Contribute for a Better Future.
  • Care, Respect, Resilience and Responsibility are the current school values.
  • The school has older institutional roots than its Sengkang location suggests. Its official history reaches back to Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle School in 1956.

Did You Know? North Vista’s Story Begins in 1956

North Vista Secondary’s official history traces the school’s origins to Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle School, established in 1956.

In 1958, the school was renamed Thomson Government Chinese Middle School and moved to Thomson Road.

Over time, the institution changed form, location and identity before eventually moving to Sengkang in 2000 and becoming North Vista Secondary School.

This makes North Vista a good example of institutional continuity.

The location changed.

The name changed.

The curriculum changed.

The learning mission continued.

Vistarians of Character Who Learn, Strive and Contribute

North Vista’s current vision is:

Vistarians of Character who Learn, Strive, Contribute for a Better Future.

That is a useful developmental sequence.

Learn builds capability.

Strive builds persistence.

Contribute directs capability outward.

The “better future” gives the whole sequence a purpose.

Care, Respect, Resilience and Responsibility

North Vista’s current school values are Care, Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.

These values are operational.

Care shapes relationships.

Respect makes teamwork possible.

Resilience helps students recover.

Responsibility keeps effort reliable.

Viva La Vista

The school crest carries the phrase “Viva La Vista.”

The official school explanation links the crest to global outlook, innovation, enterprise, community support and all-round development.

That identity fits a school whose current programmes move easily between farming, photography, videography, global exposure and leadership.

The ALP: Farm to Table in 2026

North Vista’s 2026 Applied Learning Programme uses the contextual theme Cities and Urban Landscapes and the Farm-to-Table Programme.

The school connects food sustainability to Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 and the challenge of food security.

This is a strong learning context because food security is not one subject.

It involves Science.

Technology.

Design.

Logistics.

Economics.

And human behaviour.

Why Sustainable Farming Is a Great Applied-Learning Context

A student can read about food resilience.

Then see what it means to grow food in a land-scarce city.

Questions appear immediately.

  • How much land is needed?
  • How much water?
  • How can waste become input?
  • What technology can increase yield?
  • What happens when supply chains break?

These are systems questions.

Composting: Waste Becomes Resource

North Vista’s ALP includes hands-on farming and composting activities.

Composting teaches a powerful systems lesson.

Waste is not always waste.

In another part of the system, it can become a resource.

This is circular thinking.

An eduKateSG Example: One Plate of Food, Many Systems

The following is an eduKateSG illustration, not a documented North Vista lesson.

Imagine students trace one plate of vegetables.

Biology asks how the plant grew.

Mathematics calculates yield and waste.

Technology asks how growing could be automated.

Geography asks where the food came from.

Economics asks what affects price.

CCE asks how much food should be wasted.

One plate becomes a systems lesson.

The LLP: Photography and Videography With Values

North Vista’s Learning for Life Programme is built around arts and design through photography and videography.

The programme develops values and 21st-century competencies through creative work.

Students learn to appreciate different perspectives, communicate ideas and empathise with others.

The final outputs can include storyboards, videos and short films promoting school values.

Why Photography Teaches Perspective

A camera always frames.

What is inside the frame?

What is outside?

What angle is chosen?

What moment is selected?

Students quickly learn that representation is never neutral.

That lesson transfers to media literacy.

Why Videography Develops Communication

Video adds sequence, sound, editing and timing.

The student has to decide what the audience sees first.

What stays.

What gets removed.

How long each shot lasts.

That is communication design.

Every Vistarian a Dynamic Leader With the Heart to Serve

North Vista’s student-leadership vision is “Every Vistarian a dynamic leader with the heart to serve.”

The school provides basic leadership training to all students and deeper development for those with formal responsibilities.

This is a strong model.

Leadership capability should not be reserved for a few badge holders.

Heart, Head and Hand

North Vista’s servant-leadership model uses three memorable ideas:

  • Heart — desire to serve;
  • Head — learn to lead;
  • Hand — dare to act.

This is excellent because leadership needs all three.

Heart without skill may be ineffective.

Head without action remains theory.

Hand without heart can become power without purpose.

Leadership Training Across Secondary 1 to 3

Every Vistarian receives basic leadership development through level camps and cohort training from Secondary 1 to 3.

Students then take on responsibilities through class committees, CCAs and the Prefectorial Board.

The sphere of influence grows progressively.

NV Goes Global

North Vista’s current Vistarian Experience also includes NV Goes Global.

Students travel within ASEAN, build cross-cultural awareness and develop international friendships while remaining rooted in Singapore identity.

Global exposure matters because comparison expands perspective.

Service Learning: Contribution Beyond the Classroom

The school’s Service Learning Club works on community, literacy, kindness and environmental projects.

One current flagship is Project READ, where students mentor younger pupils in reading.

This is contribution with skill.

Older students use literacy and leadership to help younger learners.

CCA as a Leadership Laboratory

North Vista’s current CCA ecosystem includes sports, performing arts, uniformed groups and clubs.

CCAs matter because they create repeated practice.

Teams have goals.

Rehearsals have deadlines.

Competitions create pressure.

Leadership becomes real.

What Families Can Borrow From North Vista Secondary’s Learning Design

  • Use food to teach systems. One meal connects Science, technology, logistics and citizenship.
  • Teach media by creating it. Photography and video reveal framing and perspective.
  • Develop leadership with heart, head and hand. Motive, skill and action all matter.
  • Give every student some leadership practice. Responsibility should not belong only to title holders.
  • Use service to strengthen competence. Contribution gives learning a beneficiary.
  • Expand perspective through global exposure. Students understand home better after seeing alternatives.
