Did you know that Riverside Primary School has a problem-solving protocol children can carry from Lego to paper, parks, upcycling and community work?
It is called PlayWorks.
Students learn to Understand, Plan, Design, Build and Improvise while also communicating, collaborating and reflecting.
Then Riverside pairs that outward problem solving with an inward and social programme called PeerWorks: build self, support one another, serve the community together.
So what is so awesome about Riverside Primary School?
It teaches children that solving a problem and supporting a person are both forms of capability.

The Quick Answer
- Vision: The Best from Each, A Better Future for All.
- Mission: Inspire Learning, Nurture Character, Build Community.
- ALP: PlayWorks — Riverside’s original critical and inventive thinking curriculum innovation.
- Distinctive student-development programme: PeerWorks.
- Values: SPARKLE — Strength of character, Perseverance, Adaptability, Responsibility, Kindness, Leadership, Enthusiasm and Sincerity.
- 2026 emphasis: evidence-based learning, ownership, joy and knowing every child.
PlayWorks: Play With a Protocol
Riverside’s PlayWorks programme is not free play with a fancy name.
It gives students a repeatable problem-solving structure.
- Understand
- Plan
- Design
- Build
- Improvise
Alongside those inventive processes sit three essential processes:
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Reflection
The combination matters.
A student does not merely make something.
The student learns how the making happened.
A Six-Year Material Progression
PlayWorks changes medium and challenge across the primary years.
- Primary 1: LegoWorks.
- Primary 2: LegoWorks.
- Primary 3: PaperWorks — redesigning a familiar game.
- Primary 4: ParkWorks — building a park that meets community needs.
- Primary 5: UpWorks — transforming discarded materials.
- Primary 6: HeartWorks — “Leaving a Mark” using discarded materials.
That progression changes more than the material.
The child moves from constructing an object towards understanding users, community, sustainability and meaning.
Improvise: The Step Many Worksheets Leave Out
One of the most useful words in the PlayWorks protocol is Improvise.
Real problems rarely behave exactly as expected.
A material bends.
A user dislikes the design.
The first idea is too expensive.
The structure falls over.
Improvisation teaches that failure can be information.
An eduKateSG Example: Build a Cooler Waiting Space
The following is an eduKateSG illustration, not a documented Riverside Primary lesson.
Imagine students are asked to improve a hot outdoor waiting area.
They observe where people stand, measure sun exposure, interview users, sketch shade ideas, make a small model, test airflow and revise the design.
Science explains heat and materials.
Mathematics handles measurement and scale.
English handles interviews and explanation.
PlayWorks provides a workflow.
Pervasive Application: A Tool Should Travel
Riverside says the PlayWorks protocol is also applied beyond the signature modules, including composition writing, Science performance tasks, Art and VIA projects.
This is important because a thinking routine becomes more valuable when it transfers.
A student should eventually recognise:
“I have seen this kind of problem before, even if the subject looks different.”
Tinkerspace: Curiosity During Recess
Riverside also runs a monthly Tinkerspace during recess, giving students opportunities to explore materials and solve hands-on scenarios.
That is a small but useful piece of learning architecture.
Not every worthwhile investigation needs a test attached to it.
PeerWorks: Everybody Begins as a Peer Supporter
Riverside’s PeerWorks programme builds from self to peers to community.
Its model has two tiers.
- Tier 1: every Riverian is a peer supporter.
- Tier 2: selected students are trained as Peer Support Leaders.
This design avoids the idea that care belongs only to appointed leaders.
Everybody can include somebody.
Everybody can listen.
Everybody can notice when a peer is being left out.
Six PeerWorks Modules: From Friendship to Community
The current PeerWorks page describes six modules for all students:
- Building Friendships and Connections
- Caring for One Another
- Understanding and Supporting Others
- Being a Positive Influence
- Leading with Compassion
- Serving the Community
There is a developmental logic here.
Belong first.
Then help.
Then influence the social environment positively.
Peer Support Is Learning Infrastructure
A child who feels isolated carries part of that problem into every lesson.
Working memory is not separate from emotion.
Confidence is not separate from participation.
That is why peer support is not merely “nice to have.”
A healthy social environment protects the conditions under which learning happens.
SPARKLE Values Inside the Work
Riverside’s SPARKLE values are integrated into PlayWorks behaviour expectations.
Perseverance becomes continuing after the first build fails.
Adaptability becomes changing an idea after evidence appears.
Kindness becomes how a team treats the quietest member.
Responsibility becomes looking after the shared materials.
Values become stronger when attached to a real task.
2026: Evidence-Based Learning and Ownership
Riverside’s 2026 principal’s message emphasises evidence-based learning and the goal that every Riverian should own their learning with joy.
Those two ideas belong together.
Ownership is not simply “I chose this.”
It is also “I can see what I know, what I do not know and what evidence says I should do next.”
What Families Can Borrow From Riverside Primary
- Give children a repeatable problem-solving protocol.
- Make iteration normal after the first attempt.
- Use different materials to reveal different constraints.
- Ask children to communicate and reflect on how they solved something.
- Teach every child basic peer-support behaviours.
- Connect values to observable actions inside real tasks.
