Why Go Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road)? | Drama, Debates and Public Speaking

Exterior of Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) in Singapore.

Why go Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) for drama, debates and public speaking? Its Applied Learning Programme focuses on developing effective communicators through these three forms. For a boy who enjoys stories, discussing ideas or expressing a point of view, that is a concrete learning experience to explore.

Parents comparing ACS Barker Road reviews, Secondary 1 choices and public-speaking programmes in Singapore can ask how confidence develops through practice. Your son might have lively ideas but need help arranging them for a listener. Look for guidance that makes his next explanation clearer and gives him room to improve.

Did you know? The official page lists Secondary 1 storytelling workshops, Secondary 2 drama and theatre exposure linked to Literature, and Secondary 3 debates and drama workshops. It describes talent-development opportunities separately under Tier 2.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5

1. Give an idea a listener

Back to contents

Our interpretation is that communication becomes more purposeful when a teenager knows what he wants someone else to understand.

Ask your son which familiar topic he could explain comfortably. An ordinary interest can provide a relaxed beginning.

At an open house, ask to see how students prepare and revise their messages. A polished final performance tells only part of the learning story.

CHAPTER 2 OF 5

2. Separate shared practice from extension

Back to contents

The school distinguishes its Tier 1 experiences from Tier 2 activities such as speaking competitions and emceeing.

Ask which experiences apply to the next cohort and how further opportunities are organised. Confirm current arrangements directly.

A quiet student can still explore communication with interest. Ask what support helps a beginner participate before assuming he needs to be comfortable on a large stage.

CHAPTER 3 OF 5

3. Explain both sides of a small choice

Back to contents

For a hypothetical home exercise, discuss whether a family outing should begin earlier or later. Give one reason for each option.

Invite your son to explain his preferred choice and acknowledge the other person’s concern. Keep the aim on clarity and listening.

This is a friendly family discussion, not an ACS Barker Road debate assignment. There is no need to score the speaker or record the conversation.

CHAPTER 4 OF 5

4. Find the next communication step

Back to contents

A child may know what he means and lose the sequence while speaking. Another may need help choosing details that suit his audience.

Ask how teachers guide planning, rehearsal and feedback. Look for a next step the learner can actually use.

If Mathematics needs separate attention, identify the particular gap. The fixed eduKate reference below explains diagnosis, continuity and focused 3-pax teaching.
