How to classify any system (individual → family → organisation → city → civilisation) by forward-motion capacity
Definition Lock (Read Once)
Projection Energy / EnDist (Eₚ) is the net forward-motion capacity of a system through time after subtracting losses from:
- friction
- misalignment
- rework
- coordination drag
EnDist is not physical energy, motivation, or busyness.
It is the difference between:
- noisy motion (high activity, low displacement)
and - forward displacement (high progress, durable capability)
This article locks P0–P3 diagnostic patterns for EnDist across all zoom levels.
The EnDist Phase Ruler (Universal)
EnDist has four operational states:
- P0 (Stall / Collapse Mode): motion mostly cancels; TTC ≈ 0; cascade risk
- P1 (Fragile Forward Motion): progress exists but collapses under load
- P2 (Stable Forward Motion): reliable progress; shocks absorbed; capability accumulates
- P3 (High-Reliability Projection): robust progress under stress; system upgrades itself while operating
You can diagnose any system using three signals:
- Rework ratio (how much effort goes into fixing failures)
- Alignment (do vectors cooperate or interfere?)
- Buffer behaviour (do shocks stay local or become systemic?)
P0 — EnDist Failure State (Noisy Motion, Near-Zero Displacement)
What it looks like
- constant emergencies
- everything feels urgent
- high activity, low output
- handoffs break, trust breaks, promises break
- small issues trigger full-system firefighting
What it is (mechanics)
- rework dominates
- coordination storms dominate
- buffers are below minimum (cascade)
- TTC collapses: damage hits core immediately
Fast diagnostic
Ask:
- “If we stop for 48 hours, does everything break?”
If yes → P0.
Recovery objective
Stop cascades and restore TTC.
Do not “push harder.” Push harder causes inversion collapse.
P1 — EnDist Survival State (Some Progress, Easy Reversal)
What it looks like
- progress appears in good weeks
- setbacks wipe out gains
- the system works only when conditions are favourable
- staff/people are exhausted but still hopeful
What it is
- forward motion exists but is fragile
- rework is still high
- buffers are thin but non-zero
- alignment is partial (some teams/layers cooperate; others interfere)
Fast diagnostic
- “Do we lose months of progress after one shock?”
If yes → P1.
Recovery objective
Raise Phase and thicken buffers into the Safety Band.
P2 — EnDist Stable State (Reliable Forward Displacement)
What it looks like
- predictable delivery
- stable routines that actually work
- shocks happen but are absorbed locally
- most effort goes into building, not repairing
What it is
- rework ratio is controlled
- buffers are tuned inside the Safety Band (not too thin, not too thick)
- alignment is good enough that vectors don’t cancel
Fast diagnostic
- “Can we take a hit and still keep moving forward?”
If yes → P2.
Objective
Prevent drift; keep redundancy warm; avoid ossification.
P3 — EnDist High-Reliability State (Robust Projection + Self-Upgrade)
What it looks like
- progress continues even during crises
- learning loops are fast and calm
- system gets stronger after shocks (not just “recovers”)
- it can teach, standardise, and replicate itself
What it is
- Phase is high (breakage is rare and contained)
- buffers are actively managed (BSB tuning is explicit)
- alignment is deep (low destructive interference)
- upgrades are sequenced without destabilising the system
Fast diagnostic
- “Do shocks become structured signals that trigger upgrades?”
If yes → P3.
Objective
Maintain envelope discipline while expanding capability.
The EnDist Diagnostic Stack (5 Zoom Levels)
Below are the same P0–P3 patterns expressed across Z-levels so the model stays bootable.
Z0 — Task / Lane / Micro-Operation
P0: task cannot complete without intervention; exceptions dominate
P1: completes with supervision; breaks under time pressure
P2: completes reliably; handles known exceptions
P3: completes reliably under load; creates playbooks; trains others
Z0 metric: failure rate + rework minutes per output unit
Z1 — Individual / Family Unit
Individual
P0: burnout spiral; constant catching up; no compounding skill
P1: can progress with external structure; regresses under stress
P2: stable routine; compounding learning; setbacks manageable
P3: resilient under load; builds systems; mentors others
Family
P0: distrust/chaos; every issue becomes a fight; no stable routines
P1: functional when calm; collapses under money/time stress
P2: stable coordination; shocks absorbed; routines protect children
P3: high-trust; recovery is fast; family upgrades itself over time
Z1 metric: proportion of time spent firefighting vs building
Z2 — Organisation / School / Hospital / City Department
P0: permanent incident mode; conflicting directives; high turnover
P1: works in “green weather”; fails in “red weather”
P2: stable operating rhythm; incidents contained; continuous improvement
P3: high-reliability org; drills; redundancy; upgrades without drama
Z2 metric: incident frequency + cross-team rework + queue backlogs
Z3 — City / Nation / Civilisation (Pipeline Scale)
P0: TTC collapse; essential flows break; cascading failures across organs
P1: survives on throttling and emergency measures; fragile legitimacy
P2: stable services; shocks absorbed by buffers; repairs keep up
P3: robust under compound shocks; upgrades while operating; corridor functions
Z3 metric: TTC (time-to-core) + buffer thickness + repair velocity vs damage velocity
The Four EnDist Killers (Universal Root Causes)
Regardless of domain, EnDist drops for only four reasons:
- Rework (failures recur; root causes unfixed)
- Misalignment (vectors cancel; internal conflict)
- Coordination drag (handoffs, bureaucracy, signalling overhead)
- Buffer failure (too thin → cascades; too thick → drag)
Everything else is a skin.
The “Busyness Trap” Diagnostic (The Most Common Confusion)
A system can look productive and still be low EnDist.
Busyness Trap signature:
- meetings multiply
- tools multiply
- metrics multiply
- urgency multiplies
- output does not compound
That is high motion, low displacement → EnDist P0/P1.
Minimal Operational Test (The 60-Second Classifier)
Ask three questions:
- Where does time go? building vs fixing
- What happens under stress? local bruise vs systemic cascade
- Does progress compound? yes/no
Answer mapping:
- mostly fixing + cascades + no compounding → P0
- mixed fixing + fragile + weak compounding → P1
- mostly building + local shocks + compounding → P2
- building continues under stress + upgrades after shocks → P3
Canonical Lock Statement
EnDist Phase (P0–P3) is diagnosed by rework dominance, alignment interference, and buffer behaviour under load. P0 is noisy motion with TTC collapse. P3 is robust forward projection with self-upgrading capability. This ruler applies at every zoom level (Z0–Z3).
This closes the EnDist diagnostic layer.
