Time problems become difficult when a learner treats clock readings like ordinary base-10 decimals. They are not. Sixty minutes make one hour, and sixty seconds make one minute. Crossing noon, midnight or an hour boundary changes the labels even when the duration remains continuous.
This guide uses one working habit: identify the two known quantities among start time, duration and end time; convert the times to a consistent format; cross boundaries deliberately; and check by reconstructing the missing quantity.

Start, duration and end time form one relationship
If an activity starts at 2:15 p.m. and lasts 1 hour 40 minutes, the end time is 3:55 p.m.
If an activity ends at 5:30 p.m. after lasting 2 hours 15 minutes, the start time is 3:15 p.m.
If an activity starts at 9:45 a.m. and ends at 11:20 a.m., the duration is 1 hour 35 minutes.
These are not three unrelated question types. They are one time relationship viewed from different directions.
Clock time is not ordinary decimal notation
2 hours 45 minutes is not 2.45 hours. In decimal hours, 45 minutes is 45/60 = 0.75 hour, so the duration is 2.75 hours.
Similarly, 1.30 hours means one hour and 0.30 of an hour, not one hour 30 minutes. For school timetable work, keep hours and minutes explicit unless the question requires decimal hours.
Bridge to the next hour when mental subtraction is awkward
Find the duration from 10:47 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.
10:47 → 11:00 = 13 min.
11:00 → 12:00 = 60 min.
12:00 → 12:25 = 25 min.
Total = 98 min = 1 h 38 min.
This boundary method is often safer than trying to subtract clock readings as if they were decimal numbers.
Crossing noon does not reset the duration
From 11:35 a.m. to 1:10 p.m.:
11:35 → 12:00 = 25 min.
12:00 → 1:00 = 60 min.
1:00 → 1:10 = 10 min.
Total = 95 min = 1 h 35 min.
The a.m./p.m. label changes at noon, but the elapsed time continues.
Crossing midnight needs the same boundary control
From 11:40 p.m. to 12:25 a.m. the next day:
11:40 p.m. → 12:00 midnight = 20 min.
12:00 → 12:25 a.m. = 25 min.
Total = 45 min.
Do not interpret the end time as earlier merely because 12:25 has a smaller-looking hour number.
24-hour time removes a.m./p.m. ambiguity
3:20 p.m. = 15:20.
8:05 p.m. = 20:05.
12:15 a.m. = 00:15.
12:15 p.m. = 12:15.
When converting afternoon/evening times after 12 noon, add 12 to the hour number for 1 p.m. through 11 p.m.
Timetable questions require row-and-column discipline
A transport timetable may list departure times down one column and arrival times across another. Before subtracting times, identify the correct service row and stop column.
Many timetable errors are not arithmetic errors. The learner may have read the wrong service or stop.
A useful routine is:
- circle the required service or event;
- underline the correct start entry;
- underline the correct end entry;
- only then calculate duration.
Waiting time and travel time are different intervals
A train arrives at 10:20 a.m. The connecting train leaves at 10:48 a.m. Waiting time = 28 min.
If the first train itself travelled from 9:35 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., its travel time was 45 min.
Do not merge travel and waiting intervals unless the question asks for total elapsed journey time.
Multi-stage schedules need a time chain
A programme begins at 8:30 a.m. Session 1 lasts 50 min, break lasts 20 min, Session 2 lasts 1 h 15 min.
8:30 + 50 min = 9:20.
9:20 + 20 min = 9:40.
9:40 + 1 h 15 min = 10:55.
Writing each state prevents one duration from being added to the wrong time.
Main worked workshop: sixteen original time problems

Start 2:25 p.m., duration 1 h 35 min.
Answer: 4:00 p.m.

Start 8:50 a.m., duration 45 min.
Answer: 9:35 a.m.

End 6:10 p.m., duration 2 h 25 min.
Answer: 3:45 p.m.

Start 9:38 a.m., end 11:05 a.m.
Answer: 1 h 27 min.

Start 11:45 a.m., end 1:20 p.m.
Answer: 1 h 35 min.

Start 10:55 p.m., end 12:30 a.m. next day.
Answer: 1 h 35 min.

Convert 4:35 p.m. to 24-hour time.
Answer: 16:35.

Convert 21:10 to 12-hour time.
Answer: 9:10 p.m.

A bus departs 07:45 and arrives 09:18.
Answer: 1 h 33 min.

A ferry arrives 14:20. Connecting ferry leaves 15:05.
Waiting time: 45 min.
11.
A lesson starts 13:35 and lasts 95 min.
Answer: 15:10.
12.
A film ends 22:15 after 2 h 20 min.
Answer: 19:55.
13.
A learner says 10:50 to 11:20 is 70 min because 120−50=70.
Repair: 10:50→11:00 is 10 min; 11:00→11:20 is 20 min; total 30 min.
14.
Start 23:50, duration 35 min.
Answer: 00:25 next day.
15.
Session A 40 min, break 15 min, Session B 55 min. Start 9:10 a.m.
Answer: 9:50, 10:05, 11:00 a.m.
16.
Journey from 08:15 to 10:45 includes a 30-min stop. Find total elapsed time and moving time.
Answer: elapsed 2 h 30 min; moving 2 h if the only non-moving interval is the stated 30 min.
Check time by rebuilding the chain
If start = 3:15 p.m. and duration = 2 h 15 min, end should be 5:30 p.m. After solving backwards for a start time, add the duration forward again. This is the time equivalent of an inverse-operation check.
Common time errors
Error 1: Treat hours and minutes as base 10.
Error 2: Forget the a.m./p.m. change at noon or midnight.
Error 3: Read the wrong timetable row or column.
Error 4: Mix waiting time with moving time.
Error 5: Convert 12 a.m. or 12 p.m. incorrectly in 24-hour time.
Independent transfer check
- Start 7:48 a.m., duration 1 h 27 min.
- Start 11:35 a.m., end 2:05 p.m.
- End 18:40, duration 2 h 55 min.
- Convert 7:25 p.m. to 24-hour time.
- Convert 00:40 to 12-hour time.
- A train arrives 13:18 and connection leaves 14:02. Find waiting time.
- Explain why 2 h 30 min is not 2.30 h.
- Explain how to check a start-time answer found by working backwards.
Independent-check answers

7. Thirty minutes is 30/60 = 0.5 hour, so 2 h 30 min = 2.5 h.
8. Add the stated duration to the recovered start time and verify that the original end time is reconstructed.
Parent and tutor guide
Use number-line time jumps rather than decimal subtraction when the learner repeatedly crosses hour boundaries incorrectly. Ask for a bridge to the next hour, then the remaining duration.
For timetables, separate reading errors from arithmetic errors. Require the learner to mark the correct row and column before calculating.
The learner’s final card
What two time quantities are known? Is the clock 12-hour or 24-hour? Where are the next hour, noon or midnight boundaries? Is the question asking travel, waiting or total elapsed time? Can I rebuild the missing value to check?
