Calendar questions often produce answers that are wrong by exactly one day. The arithmetic may be simple; the boundary interpretation is not.

From 3 June to 4 June is one day of elapsed time. But if a programme runs on both 3 June and 4 June and asks how many calendar dates are included, there are two dates. The same pair of dates can therefore produce different answers because the question counts different objects.

Decide first whether you are counting elapsed days, named calendar dates, complete weeks or recurring weekly events. Then mark the start and end boundaries before calculating.

This guide complements Guide 25 on clock-time duration. Here the focus is days, weeks and dates rather than hours and minutes.

Elapsed time and included dates are different jobs

A trip starts on 10 August and ends on 13 August.

Elapsed duration from the start of 10 August to the start of 13 August = 3 days.

If the traveller is present on 10, 11, 12 and 13 August and the question asks how many named dates are included, the answer is 4 dates.

The extra one comes from including both boundary dates as counted items.

Use a date number line for short intervals

For 6 March to 10 March, write:

6 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 10.

There are four jumps, so elapsed time is 4 days.

There are five labelled dates if both endpoints are included in an event.

Count jumps for elapsed time; count named dates for inclusive date counts.

Seven days make one week

A programme lasts 28 days. That is 28 ÷ 7 = 4 weeks.

A programme lasts 4 weeks and 3 days. Total = 4×7 + 3 = 31 days.

Keep weeks and days as compatible units before comparing or adding them.

Day-of-week problems use remainders after groups of seven

If today is Tuesday, what day is it 10 days later?

10 = 7 + 3. Seven days returns to Tuesday; three more days gives Friday.

The remainder after division by 7 determines the shift around the weekly cycle.

“Days after” and “the nth day” are not identical phrases

Three days after Monday is Thursday: Tuesday is one day after, Wednesday two, Thursday three.

If Monday is Day 1 of a camp, then Day 3 is Wednesday. The start day is counted as the first named day of the programme.

Translate the wording before using the number.

Months have different lengths

Do not treat every month as 30 days unless the problem explicitly supplies that model.

For a real calendar task, use the actual calendar information provided or known for the stated year. When the exact number of days matters, write the remaining days in the first month and the needed days in the next rather than assuming a uniform month.

Cross a month boundary deliberately

Suppose a non-leap-year example asks for elapsed time from 28 April to 3 May.

28 Apr → 29 Apr = 1 day
29 Apr → 30 Apr = 1 day
30 Apr → 1 May = 1 day
1 May → 2 May = 1 day
2 May → 3 May = 1 day

Total elapsed time = 5 days.

If all named dates from 28 April through 3 May are included in an event, there are six dates.

Leap-year information matters only when February 29 is relevant

If a problem crosses late February and gives the year, check whether February has 28 or 29 days. Do not introduce leap-year complexity when the dates do not involve February’s end.

When school material supplies a calendar, use that calendar directly rather than relying on memory.

Recurring weekly events can be counted by position

A class meets every Saturday for 6 consecutive Saturdays, beginning 2 May. The meeting dates are the start date plus five weekly jumps.

Duration from first meeting to sixth meeting = 5 weeks = 35 days, even though six meetings occur.

This is another points-versus-intervals distinction: six event dates create five gaps between the first and last.

“By”, “before” and “on” define different boundaries

“Submit by 12 September” commonly includes that date as the deadline in ordinary task language unless other instructions specify a time earlier.

“Submit before 12 September” excludes 12 September.

“Submit on 12 September” names that date specifically.

Mathematics questions should be read according to the exact wording supplied. Do not convert all deadline phrases into the same boundary rule.

Main worked workshop: sixteen original date problems

1.

Elapsed days from 4 June to 9 June.

Answer: 5 days.

2.

Dates included from 4 June through 9 June, both included.

Answer: 6 dates.

3.

35 days in weeks.

Answer: 5 weeks.

4.

3 weeks 4 days in days.

Answer: 25 days.

5.

Eight days after Monday.

Answer: Tuesday.

6.

15 days after Friday.

Answer: Saturday, because 15 leaves remainder 1 after groups of seven.

7.

Monday is Day 1. What weekday is Day 5?

Answer: Friday.

8.

Four days after Monday.

Answer: Friday.

9.

Elapsed time from 27 April to 2 May.

Answer: 5 days.

10.

Inclusive event dates 27 April through 2 May.

Answer: 6 dates.

11.

Five consecutive weekly meetings. How many weeks between first and fifth meeting?

Answer: 4 weeks.

12.

A learner counts 10 March to 11 March as two elapsed days because two dates appear.

Repair: elapsed time between the starts of those dates is one day.

13.

A learner says Day 7 is seven days after Day 1.

Repair: Day 7 is six elapsed days after Day 1 because Day 1 is the starting point.

14.

A schedule repeats every 7 days. An event happens on Wednesday. What day after 28 days?

Answer: Wednesday.

15.

A 17-day period equals how many weeks and days?

Answer: 2 weeks 3 days.

16.

An event occurs on both 1 July and 2 July. How many event dates? How much elapsed time between the start of those dates?

Answer: 2 dates; 1 day.

Both use start, duration and end. The difference is the unit scale: dates and days here, hours and minutes in Guide 25.

Use Rebuild Elapsed Time From Start, Duration and End Time for clock boundaries such as noon and midnight.

Common calendar errors

Error 1: Count both dates when the task asks elapsed days.

Error 2: Exclude the start date when the programme defines it as Day 1.

Error 3: Treat every month as 30 days.

Error 4: Count event dates and intervals as the same quantity.

Error 5: Ignore the wording “before”, “after”, “from”, “through” or “inclusive”.

  1. Elapsed time from 12 May to 19 May.
  2. How many dates are included from 12 May through 19 May?
  3. 45 days = how many weeks and days?
  4. Today is Thursday. What day is 17 days later?
  5. Thursday is Day 1. What weekday is Day 10?
  6. Seven consecutive weekly sessions occur. How many weeks separate the first and seventh?
  7. Explain why “3 days after Monday” differs from “Day 3 when Monday is Day 1”.
  8. Explain why a real-calendar month boundary should not be treated as a fixed 30-day block unless stated.

Independent-check answers

1. 7 days.

2. 8 dates.

3. 6 weeks 3 days.

4. Sunday, since 17 leaves remainder 3 after two weeks.

5. Saturday, because Day 10 is nine elapsed days after Thursday.

6. 6 weeks.

7. “After” counts jumps; Day 1 counts Monday as the first position.

8. Real months have different lengths, so the actual calendar or stated model controls the count.

Parent and tutor guide

Use a short row of dates and physically point to jumps for elapsed time. Then circle the named dates for an inclusive-count question. Seeing both on the same example makes the off-by-one source explicit.

For weekly recurrence, place dots for events and count gaps between them. This is the same points-versus-intervals idea used in graphs.

The learner’s final card

Am I counting elapsed days or included dates? Does the start count as Day 1? How many seven-day cycles fit? What boundary words does the question use? Does a month boundary change the day count?
