A turn question has two pieces that must stay connected: where the object starts and how far and in which direction it turns. A learner who remembers “quarter turn = 90°” but forgets the starting direction can still end at the wrong orientation.

This guide uses one working habit: mark the starting direction, translate the turn into quarter-turn units or degrees, move clockwise or anticlockwise one step at a time, then check the final direction against the size of the turn.

One full turn is 360°

A quarter turn = 90°.

A half turn = 180°.

A three-quarter turn = 270°.

A full turn = 360°, returning an object to its original direction.

These sizes describe rotation. They do not, by themselves, tell you the final direction.

Clockwise follows the direction of clock hands

Starting from North, a quarter turn clockwise points East. Another quarter turn points South, then West, then North again.

The cycle is:

North → East → South → West → North.

Anticlockwise runs around the cycle in the opposite direction

Starting from North, a quarter turn anticlockwise points West.

The cycle is:

North → West → South → East → North.

The starting direction is part of the data

A quarter turn clockwise does not always end East. It ends East only if the start is North.

Starting South and turning a quarter turn clockwise ends West.

Starting West and turning a quarter turn clockwise ends North.

Write the starting direction before thinking about the result.

A half turn gives the opposite direction

North becomes South.

East becomes West.

South becomes North.

West becomes East.

Clockwise and anticlockwise half turns give the same final direction because both rotate 180°.

A three-quarter turn can be thought of as three quarter turns

From East, three quarter turns clockwise go:

East → South → West → North.

Final direction: North.

Alternatively, a three-quarter clockwise turn has the same final orientation as one quarter turn anticlockwise. Both differ by a full 360° rotation.

Different rotations can have the same final direction

From North:

  • 90° clockwise → East;
  • 270° anticlockwise → East;
  • 450° clockwise → East because 450° = 360° + 90°.

The full-turn part changes how much rotation occurred but not the final orientation.

Reduce large turns by complete full turns

Find the final direction after 630° clockwise from North.

630° = 360° + 270°.

Ignore the complete full turn for final-direction purposes, then make a 270° clockwise turn:

North → East → South → West.

Final direction: West.

Turning a shape preserves lengths and angles

Rotating a rectangle changes its orientation but not its side lengths, right angles or parallel relationships.

This connects turn reasoning to Guide 30 on shape properties and Guide 23 on symmetry.

A point of rotation matters

If a shape turns around its centre, the centre stays fixed while other points move around it.

If it turns around a corner, that corner stays fixed instead. The final orientation can be the same while the final position is different.

Do not confuse rotation direction with translation from one place to another.

Several turns can be combined

Start North. Turn 90° clockwise, then 180°.

After 90° clockwise: East.

After 180° more: West.

Final direction: West.

You may combine signed turn sizes mentally later, but step-by-step movement is safer while the relationship is being learned.

Opposite equal turns cancel in orientation

Start East. Turn 90° clockwise, then 90° anticlockwise.

The first turn points South; the second returns East.

Net orientation change = zero.

A learner says “quarter turn clockwise means East”.

Repair: East is the result only from a North start. The start direction is required.

A learner rotates a square and says it is no longer a square.

Repair: rotation preserves equal sides and right angles.

Use the table as a check, not as a substitute for understanding the turn cycle.

Direction changes and movement routes are separate

A robot may turn right without moving forward. Its orientation changes while its position remains fixed.

Then it may move 5 m forward without turning. Its position changes while its orientation remains the same.

Keep turn commands and movement commands as separate steps in route problems.

Common turn errors

Error 1: Forget the starting direction.

Error 2: Reverse clockwise and anticlockwise.

Error 3: Treat a half turn as a quarter turn.

Error 4: Forget that full turns leave the same final orientation.

Error 5: Mix turning with forward movement.

Independent transfer check

  1. Start West, quarter turn clockwise.
  2. Start South, quarter turn anticlockwise.
  3. Start North, half turn.
  4. Start East, three-quarter turn anticlockwise.
  5. Start South, 450° clockwise.
  6. Start North, 720° anticlockwise.
  7. Explain why clockwise and anticlockwise half turns give the same final direction.
  8. Explain why a rotated rectangle remains a rectangle.

Parent and tutor guide

Use an arrow card and physically rotate it. Say the starting direction aloud before every turn. Once the learner is accurate, remove the card and use a four-direction sketch.

For large angles, subtract complete 360° turns first. For sequences, keep each orientation as a written state until the child can combine turns reliably.

The learner’s final card

Where am I facing now? Clockwise or anticlockwise? Quarter, half, three-quarter or full turn? Are there complete 360° turns I can remove? Is the object only turning, or also moving?
