G2 Science Is a Combined Science Route—Two Disciplines That Must Remain Distinct Enough to Think Clearly.
Under the 2027 Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, G2 Science is offered through three combinations: K223 Physics–Chemistry, K224 Physics–Biology and K225 Chemistry–Biology. Each discipline contributes half of the combined result, but the reasoning style of Physics, Chemistry and Biology remains different.
This is why combined Science should not be taught as one blurred subject. Physics needs quantity, relationship and graph discipline. Chemistry needs particle, symbolic and reaction reasoning. Biology needs structure, function, process and system reasoning. What they share is the evidence layer: questions, measurements, data, explanations and transfer.

SEAB’s current 2027 syllabus specifies six discipline papers, with each candidate taking the four papers corresponding to their two disciplines.

For a chosen discipline, its MCQ and structured paper are taken in one 1 hour 15 minute session; candidates are advised not to spend more than 30 minutes on the MCQ portion. Structured papers contain a compulsory Section A and a Section B where one of two structured questions is answered.

Two Disciplines Means Two Mental Operating Modes
The combined result is one subject entry, but the child should be able to switch mental mode deliberately.

The student should not answer Biology like Chemistry or Chemistry like Physics. A numerical-looking Biology graph still requires a biological mechanism. A Chemistry observation still needs chemical reasoning, not generic “energy changed”.
Combined Science is coherent when the learner knows what the disciplines share—and what they must not blur.
MCQ: Twenty Questions Can Expose Twenty Fine Distinctions
Each discipline’s MCQ paper contains 20 compulsory questions. Because the paper is short, a handful of recurring misconceptions can move the result significantly.
We review wrong MCQs by asking:
- Which scientific rule did the student actually use?
- Why did the chosen distractor look plausible?
- Which word, diagram feature or quantity should have ruled it out?
- Would the student make the same mistake if the object/organism/substance changed?
The final question converts recall into transfer. If the student can reject the same misconception in a different context, the repair is more likely to hold.
Structured Papers: Thirty Marks of Generated Science
The structured paper for each discipline carries 30 marks. Section A is compulsory and Section B asks the candidate to choose one of two structured questions.
This creates two demands:
- Generation: produce the scientific answer without options.
- Selection: in Section B, decide which question offers the stronger scoring route.
Section B choice should not be made from topic preference alone. A familiar topic can contain a difficult data or explanation demand. Students should scan both choices for mark structure, evidence type and their own stability before committing.
For explanations we use a discipline-neutral scaffold that is then translated into the correct Science:
Changed condition → relevant scientific relationship → effect → requested outcome.
Experimental Reasoning Still Matters Without a Separate Practical Paper
G2 Science does not use the same common practical-paper architecture as G3 combined Science. That does not make experimental reasoning unimportant.
Students can still be asked to interpret apparatus, identify variables, read measurements, plot or interpret graphs, evaluate results and reason from observations.
We train the same evidence chain throughout both disciplines:
- What is being tested?
- What changes?
- What is measured?
- What must be controlled?
- What pattern does the evidence show?
- What conclusion is supported?
- What specific limitation affects confidence?
This keeps practical thinking transferable into later technical, polytechnic or higher-level Science environments.
Do Not Let One Strong Discipline Hide One Weak Discipline
Because each discipline contributes 50%, a strong component can make the combined score look comfortable while the other remains fragile.
We therefore keep separate internal scorecards:
- MCQ stability by discipline;
- structured-response stability by discipline;
- topic retrieval within each discipline;
- data/graph performance;
- experimental reasoning;
- timing and Section B selection.
A 70 overall built from 85 in one discipline and 55 in the other is a different learning problem from two stable 70s. The tuition plan should notice the difference.

A Typical 90-Minute G2 Science Tutorial
The exact split depends on school sequence and which component is currently weakest. A representative session might be:
- 10 min — Mixed retrieval: both disciplines represented.
- 25 min — Discipline A: current model plus MCQ/structured transfer.
- 25 min — Discipline B: current model plus MCQ/structured transfer.
- 15 min — Data/experimental reasoning: graph, apparatus or evaluation.
- 10 min — Timed selection/generation: short Section B-style decision or structured response.
- 5 min — Error ledger: record each discipline separately.
Some weeks should be deliberately uneven. If Chemistry has a major prerequisite break while Physics is stable, the class should not force an artificial 45/45 split. Equal assessment weight does not imply equal remediation time every week.
