The useful distinction on this page is between surplus and buffers. Surplus is capacity beyond immediate demand. Buffers are reserves, alternatives or slack that absorb shocks. Both matter in many systems, but different societies create resilience in different ways.

Resilience can come from storage, mobility, diversity, reciprocity, redundancy or trade—not only from accumulated surplus.

Surplus

Surplus may include extra food, energy, labour time, financial capacity, spare production or information-processing capacity. It can support learning, specialisation, construction and investment, but the existence of surplus does not determine civilisation type or human worth.

Buffers

Buffers may include stored food, spare parts, redundant routes, financial reserves, alternative water sources, social reciprocity, ecological diversity, mobility options or reserve staff. The relevant buffer depends on the system and environment.

Why the “minimum energy requirement” framing is retired

The older page assumed that civilisation requires stored surplus and that insufficient surplus traps groups in “survival time.” That is too narrow. Mobile and mixed-subsistence societies can manage uncertainty through mobility, dispersed resources, reciprocal networks and environmental knowledge rather than large stores.

Storage can be crucial in one ecology and less important in another. The analytical question is how does this system handle variability and preserve important functions?

Buffers are not proof of health

A large reserve can mask deterioration if it is being consumed faster than it is replenished. A wealthy system may be brittle if it depends on a single route or supplier. Resilience requires examining flows, replenishment, access and failure modes—not merely stock size.

Failure claims must stay bounded

When buffers fail, maintenance or continuity may suffer in the relevant subsystem. Do not assume a universal sequence from shrinking surplus to civilisational collapse. Identify the actual causal chain, alternatives and receiver.
