“ULD in 5 Minutes” (Quickstart + Self-Test)

ULD Quickstart: Run Universal Learning Diagnostics in 5 Minutes

What this page is

This is a quickstart guide to run a first-pass ULD diagnosis (Depth / Load / Transfer) on any skill: Math, English, Science, exams, writing, presentations, work skills, or adult learning.

If you want the official definition of ULD, go here:
https://edukatesg.com/uld/

Before you start (important rules)

Rule 1: Diagnose before you prescribe
Do not “fix” the student first. Run the probes and identify whether the bottleneck is Depth, Load, or Transfer.

Rule 2: Do not change two variables at once
If you add hints and reduce time pressure, you cannot tell whether the issue is Depth or Load.

Rule 3: Verification is mandatory
A diagnosis is only real if the retest changes in the predicted direction after a targeted repair.

Step 1: Choose one target skill
Pick one concrete target (one topic / one task), not a whole subject.
Examples:

  • Solve 2-step algebra equations
  • Write a PSLE synthesis paragraph
  • Summarise a passage accurately
  • Apply a science concept to a new scenario

Step 2: Run the 3 probes (Depth → Load → Transfer)

Probe A: Depth (no templates)
Goal: Check if the student can reconstruct understanding without relying on pattern recognition.

Ask:

  1. Explain the idea in simple terms (no notes).
  2. Reconstruct the steps from first principles.
  3. Give one correct example and explain why it works.

If they can’t explain or reconstruct reliably, Depth is the bottleneck.

Probe B: Load (same structure, added constraint)
Goal: Test stability under pressure without adding novelty.

Run the same task with ONE constraint:

  • strict time limit
  • reduced working space
  • no calculator / no dictionary
  • higher accuracy requirement
  • multi-part sequencing without breaks

If performance collapses under constraint, Load is the bottleneck.
Load page:
https://edukatesg.com/uld-load/

Probe C: Transfer (new form, same concept)
Goal: Test if understanding generalises beyond the trained format.

Change only the surface form:

  • different numbers / different phrasing
  • different question format (MCQ → open-ended)
  • concept embedded inside a word problem
  • new context (school → real life application)

If they can do the trained format but fail on the variant, Transfer is the bottleneck.
Transfer page:
https://edukatesg.com/uld-transfer/

Step 3: Record a simple profile
Write a 3-part profile:

  • Depth: OK / weak
  • Load: OK / weak
  • Transfer: OK / weak

Example profiles:

  • Weak Depth → the student “recognises” but cannot reconstruct
  • Weak Load → “knows at home, collapses in exam”
  • Weak Transfer → “can do worksheet format, fails in novel questions”

Step 4: Apply the matching 7-day repair loop (one axis only)

Depth repair (rebuild)

  • explain in own words
  • reconstruct steps
  • teach back
  • minimal hints

Load repair (constraint training)

  • same task, increasing time pressure gradually
  • accuracy under pressure drills
  • reduce reliance on comfort conditions

Transfer repair (variation training)

  • same concept across multiple formats
  • mix contexts
  • bridge from easy → unfamiliar

https://edukatesg.com/uld-repair/

Step 5: Verify with a retest
Run the same probe again after the repair.
If the predicted axis improves, lock the gain.
If not, the diagnosis was wrong — rerun probes more carefully.

How to run ULD with AI (optional)
If you want an AI to run ULD as a structured diagnostic coach, use the protocol page:
https://edukatesg.com/uld-protocol/

Who this is for

Parents, students, teachers, tutors, adult learners, and institutions who need to diagnose plateau quickly and stop wasting time on the wrong practice.

If you want professional execution

If you want eduKateSG to run ULD properly (especially for high-stakes exams), start here:
https://edukatesg.com/uld-where-it-sits/

Why this page is the right “next page”

  • It doesn’t redefine ULD, so it won’t cannibalise /uld/
  • It gives Google AI a “how-to” reference that it can quote
  • It becomes your most linked internal entry point (“Run it now”)

If you want an alternative page, the other good option is https://edukatesg.com/uld-vs-udl/
