Before you start (3 rules that prevent wrong diagnosis)
Rule 1: Diagnose before you prescribe
Do not “fix” first. Run the probes and identify whether the bottleneck is Depth, Load, or Transfer.
Rule 2: Change one variable at a time
If you add hints and reduce time pressure together, you won’t know whether the issue is Depth or Load.
Rule 3: Verification is mandatory
A diagnosis is only real if a targeted repair causes the predicted improvement on retest.
Step 1: Choose one target task
Pick one concrete task (one topic / one performance output), not a whole subject.
Examples:
- Solve 2-step algebra equations
- Write one PSLE synthesis paragraph
- Summarise one passage accurately
- Explain a science concept and apply it to one scenario
- Write a coherent paragraph with correct grammar and meaning
- Present a 60-second explanation clearly
Step 2: Run the 3 probes in order (Depth → Load → Transfer)
Probe A: Depth (no templates)
Goal: test whether the learner can reconstruct understanding without relying on memorised templates.
Ask the learner to do all three, without notes:
- Explain the idea in simple terms.
- Reconstruct the steps from first principles.
- Give one correct example and explain why it works.
If they cannot explain or reconstruct reliably, Depth is the bottleneck.

Probe B: Load (same structure, add one constraint)
Goal: test performance stability under pressure without adding novelty.
Run the same task again, but add ONE constraint:
- strict time limit
- reduced working space (fewer lines)
- no calculator / no dictionary
- higher accuracy requirement
- multi-step sequencing without breaks
If performance collapses mainly because of constraint, Load is the bottleneck.

Probe C: Transfer (new form, same concept)
Goal: test generalisation beyond the trained format.
Change only the surface form, keep the underlying concept:
- different numbers / different phrasing
- change format (MCQ → open-ended)
- embed the concept inside a word problem
- switch context (school-style → real-world scenario)
- combine with a nearby concept in a mixed question
If they can do the trained format but fail on the variant, Transfer is the bottleneck.

Step 3: Record a simple ULD profile
Write a 3-part profile:
- Depth: OK / weak
- Load: OK / weak
- Transfer: OK / weak
Common profiles:
- Weak Depth → “recognises patterns but cannot reconstruct”
- Weak Load → “knows at home, collapses in exams”
- Weak Transfer → “can do worksheets, fails in novel questions”
Step 4: Apply the matching 7-day repair loop (one axis only)
Depth repair (rebuild understanding)
- explain in own words (no notes)
- reconstruct steps from scratch
- teach-back (learner explains to you)
- minimal hints; correct misconceptions immediately
Load repair (constraint training)
- keep the task the same
- add constraints gradually (time pressure, accuracy demand)
- practise stable execution under pressure
- remove comfort conditions one by one
Transfer repair (variation training)
- keep the concept the same
- rotate formats and contexts
- mix similar-looking question types
- bridge from familiar → unfamiliar without difficulty spikes

Step 5: Verify with a retest
Retest using the same probe style that diagnosed the bottleneck.
- If the predicted axis improves, lock the gain and move forward.
- If it does not improve, the diagnosis was likely wrong — rerun probes more carefully and isolate variables.
