How academic vocabulary unlocks classroom instructions
Many classroom instructions are linguistically dense even when the underlying task is simple. “Identify the character, select one supporting detail and explain your answer” contains at least three academic actions. If identify, select and explain are unstable, the child may fail the task despite understanding the story. That is why instruction vocabulary deserves explicit teaching.
A useful approach is to translate the instruction into an action without removing the word. Instead of replacing identify forever with “find,” say: “Identify means find and name the correct one. Identify the character.” Keep the academic word visible while making its job concrete. Over time the scaffold can fade.
The same principle applies to compare, sort, classify, estimate, support, revise and report. Each word should be tied to a repeated classroom move. Academic language becomes efficient when children no longer need to stop and decode the instruction itself.
The difference between conversational vocabulary and school vocabulary
Conversational vocabulary helps children participate in everyday life: food, family, play, feelings, routines, places and common actions. Academic vocabulary overlaps with that language but adds words that organise learning. A child may say, “These are the same,” while a worksheet says, “Compare the two shapes.” A child may say, “I think this,” while a teacher asks, “What evidence supports your answer?”
The difference is not that school words are always longer. Rule, step, goal, cause, effect, true and false are short words with high academic value. Their power comes from how often they organise tasks and reasoning.
Reading: move from naming to comprehension
In early reading, academic vocabulary gives the child a compact map: title, author, character, setting, event, detail, main idea, sequence, predict, infer. Teach these words through real stories rather than isolated definitions. Ask “Who is the character?” while the book is open. Ask “What detail helped you predict that?” at a natural pause. Ask “What can we infer from the picture?” only after children understand that inference uses clues.
Do not turn every story into a test. The words should support comprehension, not replace the pleasure and meaning of reading. A few well-timed questions are enough. Writing: give each improvement move a name
Children often receive broad advice such as “write better” or “add more.” Academic writing vocabulary makes the feedback executable. Expand means add useful information. When the adult names the move accurately, the child starts to build a model of writing as a process rather than a one-shot performance. The sentence can be changed. The idea can be clarified. The punctuation can be edited. The explanation can be supported.
Mathematics: language is part of the problem
First-grade mathematics depends on language such as number, count, total, equal, more, less, difference, pattern, measure and estimate. Some words also have everyday meanings. Difference can mean how two things are not the same, and later it can refer specifically to the result of subtraction. Children benefit when both meanings are made explicit rather than treated as unrelated.
Use objects and actions. Build two equal sets. Ask which has more. Estimate before counting. Measure with cubes. Continue a pattern and explain the rule. The words become meaningful because the child can see the relationship they name.
Science: separate observation from explanation
Young children naturally mix what they see with what they think. Early science vocabulary helps separate those layers. Observe tells what was noticed. Result tells what happened in a test. A lighter home routine

Final principle: school becomes easier when the instruction language is visible
The purpose of academic vocabulary at Primary 1 is not to make school sound more complicated. It is the opposite. When children understand the recurring words teachers, books and worksheets use to organise learning, the classroom becomes more legible. Identify tells the child to find and name. Compare tells the child to examine similarities and differences. Explain asks for how or why. Evidence asks what supports the idea. Revise asks the child to improve meaning. Check asks for a deliberate second look.
Teach a small set, connect every word to a real action, retrieve it later and move it across contexts. That is how academic vocabulary stops being a list and becomes part of the child’s learning system.
