New Year Resolutions That Work: From Goals to Actions, Feedback and Adjustment

Quick answer: A resolution becomes useful when it is converted from a desired future into observable actions, triggered by clear situations, reviewed against evidence and adjusted when reality disagrees with the plan. “Study harder” is an intention. “If I finish dinner by 7.30 pm, then I will begin 25 minutes of Mathematics retrieval practice at 8 pm” is an executable plan.

This article began at the end of 2014 as a New Year message for 2015. Its strongest idea was already present: large achievements often become possible through small, repeated increases. The original example came from music practice — slowing an apparently impossible passage down, mastering it accurately, then increasing the tempo gradually. That example is worth keeping because it describes a general learning principle: stabilise before scaling.

Why resolutions usually fail before the work begins

Many resolutions are written as outcomes:

  • get better grades;
  • stop procrastinating;
  • read more;
  • be healthier;
  • be more organised;
  • get into a desired course or university.

These can be meaningful goals, but they do not yet specify what happens on Tuesday at 8.15 pm when the learner is tired, the phone is nearby and the examination is still months away.

The missing layer is execution.

Goal → action → evidence → adjustment

A useful resolution can be modelled as a loop:

Goal → choose action → perform → observe result → compare with target → adjust → repeat.

The goal gives direction. The action creates movement. Evidence tells us whether the movement is useful. Adjustment keeps the plan connected to reality.

Without feedback, persistence can become repetition. Without a goal, activity can become busyness. Without action, aspiration remains a sentence.

Step 1: Separate what you want from what you want to stop

The original 2014 article suggested two lists:

  • What do I want to achieve?
  • What do I not want to repeat?

This remains useful because approach goals and avoidance goals produce different action problems. “Score AL1 for PSLE Mathematics” asks what capability must be built. “Stop losing marks through unanswered questions” asks what recurring failure must be interrupted.

Keep both lists short. A plan with fifteen “top priorities” has no real priority.

Step 2: Define the observable result

“Improve English” is too broad. A better target identifies what improvement would look like:

  • read four substantial texts each week and discuss them;
  • reduce repeated grammar errors in marked compositions;
  • improve inference accuracy in comprehension practice;
  • build a usable vocabulary bank and retrieve words in context;
  • finish timed writing with enough time to review.

The target should be specific enough that evidence can later tell us whether the system is moving.

Step 3: Convert intentions into if-then plans

Research on implementation intentions examines plans that connect a situation to a response: if situation Y occurs, then I will perform behaviour Z. The purpose is to help translate a goal intention into action, especially at predictable moments where self-regulation tends to fail.

Examples for students:

  • If I sit down for evening study, then I will put my phone outside the room before opening the first task.
  • If a marked paper returns, then I will classify every lost mark before attempting another full paper.
  • If I become stuck for more than a planned amount of time, then I will mark the exact point of uncertainty and ask a specific question.
  • If I finish a chapter, then I will close the notes and retrieve the main ideas before moving on.
  • If I miss one planned session, then I will resume at the next scheduled opportunity instead of abandoning the week.

The value of the if-then form is that it pre-decides part of the behaviour before the difficult moment arrives.

Step 4: Start below maximum speed

The music example from the original article deserves a permanent place here.

A difficult passage played at full tempo may collapse because too many requirements exceed the performer’s current control. The musician slows the passage until the notes and timing can be produced correctly. Once that performance stabilises, the tempo rises gradually.

The same logic applies to many learning problems:

  • solve accurately before solving quickly;
  • write one strong paragraph before forcing a full essay at speed;
  • read a difficult passage slowly enough to understand its structure before training examination pace;
  • build a reliable 20-minute study habit before promising four hours every night;
  • master one layer of a procedure before adding more complexity.

Accuracy creates a platform for speed. Reliability creates a platform for scale.

Step 5: Make progress measurable, but do not worship the measure

A useful measure should help you decide what to do next. It should not become the goal simply because it is easy to count.

For example, “hours studied” is easy to record but can be misleading. Two hours of rereading notes may produce less learning than 45 minutes of retrieval, correction and transfer practice.

Better evidence may include:

  • percentage of previously missed questions now solved correctly;
  • number of repeated error types that disappear;
  • ability to explain a concept without notes;
  • accuracy on unfamiliar variants;
  • timed completion without loss of checking quality;
  • consistency of starting and completing planned learning loops.

Step 6: Decide in advance what happens after failure

A realistic plan assumes that some days will fail. Illness, school deadlines, fatigue, family events and simple human inconsistency exist.

The dangerous interpretation is:

“I broke the plan, therefore the plan is over.”

A stronger recovery rule is:

miss → identify cause → protect the next opportunity → resume.

The goal is not an unbroken streak for display. The goal is a system that returns to useful action.

Step 7: Review the plan at fixed intervals

A resolution should not be frozen for twelve months. Schedule review points.

  • What did I intend to do?
  • What actually happened?
  • What improved?
  • What repeatedly failed?
  • Was the action poorly chosen, poorly executed or simply not repeated enough?
  • Has the goal itself changed?
  • What is the next smallest useful adjustment?

This keeps aspiration correctable by reality.

For students: connect goals to examination dates

An examination date changes planning because the remaining time is finite. Work backwards from the event:

  1. What must be reliable on examination day?
  2. What must be tested under full-paper conditions before then?
  3. What weak areas must be repaired before full-paper practice becomes useful?
  4. What knowledge requires spacing across multiple returns?
  5. What should stop being introduced near the examination because consolidation matters more?

The calendar turns an aspiration into a sequence of constrained decisions.

For parents: support the system, not just the ambition

A parent can help by asking questions that expose the learning process:

  • What is the one thing you are trying to improve this week?
  • What evidence made you choose it?
  • What will you do when the planned session begins?
  • How will you know whether the practice worked?
  • What will you change if it does not work?

This is more useful than repeating “work harder” because it helps the child gradually take ownership of the control loop.

A resolution template

  • Goal: What outcome matters?
  • Reason: Why does it matter?
  • Current state: What evidence describes where I am now?
  • First action: What is the smallest useful move?
  • If-then trigger: When exactly will that move happen?
  • Evidence: What will show whether it worked?
  • Review date: When will I inspect the evidence?
  • Adjustment: What changes if reality differs from the plan?
  • Recovery: What will I do after a missed attempt?

The deeper idea

A resolution is not a promise about who you will magically become. It is a temporary model of how present actions might produce a desired future. The model should be ambitious enough to matter and humble enough to be corrected.

The musician does not argue with the metronome. The passage either holds together at the new tempo or it does not. If it does not, the performer returns to a speed where control is possible, repairs the weakness and tries again.

That is a useful way to approach education and life: aspire, act, measure, correct, continue.
