There is a particular kind of examination silence.
The student has read the question.
They recognise the topic.
They know they have learned something relevant.
But nothing moves.
The pen waits.
The clock does not.
This is not always a knowledge failure.
Sometimes the student cannot yet see the whole route, and mistakes that uncertainty for having no route at all.
Examination Craft offers a smaller question:
What is the first useful move I can make?
Quick Read
The First Move is the earliest valid action that reduces uncertainty or advances the answer without committing the student to a bad route. It might be writing a known relationship, identifying the required variable, locating evidence, naming the scientific mechanism, sketching a representation, or stating the comparison being made. The goal is not motion for its own sake. The goal is to convert “I cannot see the entire solution” into “I can do the next reliable thing.”
Students Often Think They Need the Whole Route Before They Begin
This is understandable.
Worked examples usually arrive complete.
The solution in the textbook already knows where it is going.
Line 1 flows into Line 2.
Line 2 flows into Line 3.
The finished answer creates the illusion that competent people see everything at once.
They often do not.
Competent problem solving frequently begins with a partial but useful orientation:
- I know what is being asked.
- I know what information matters.
- I recognise one relevant relationship.
- I can test one route.
- I can make one representation clearer.
The first move does not need to contain the whole solution.
It needs to be useful.
A Good First Move Has Three Properties
1. It is justified
The move comes from the question, the subject or a known relationship.
It is not random activity designed to make the student feel less stuck.
2. It reduces uncertainty
After the move, the problem should be at least slightly clearer.
A diagram becomes labelled.
A relationship becomes visible.
A paragraph acquires a claim.
A source acquires a point of comparison.
3. It preserves options
A good first move should not trap the student unnecessarily.
If two methods are possible, the first move may be one that reveals which method is cleaner rather than committing immediately to the longest one.
This is especially important under examination conditions.
Time makes bad commitments expensive.
The First Move Is Not “Do Something”
There is a dangerous version of this advice:
“Just start writing.”
Sometimes that helps.
Sometimes it creates a page full of movement with no direction.
Examination Craft is not interested in movement for appearance.
The first move must belong to the job of the question.
If the task is unclear, return to The Question Has a Job.
If the information and constraints are tangled, return to Given, Wanted, Constraints.
The First Move begins only after the problem has been made clear enough to act on.
Mathematics: Make a Relationship Visible
A difficult Mathematics question can produce blank-page paralysis.
One useful first move is often to externalise a relationship that is already known.
That could mean:
- define the unknown;
- write a relevant equation or identity;
- mark equal lengths or angles;
- rewrite the target in a more usable form;
- sketch the structure;
- substitute a known value where that is clearly valid.
Not every problem uses these moves.
The point is that a strong first move creates structure.
Once structure is visible, retrieval becomes easier.
Science: Name the Mechanism Before Writing the Explanation
A Science student may know several facts that could be relevant.
The danger is writing all of them and hoping one becomes the answer.
A better first move may be:
What mechanism connects the condition to the observed result?
Once the mechanism is named, the explanation has a spine.
Condition → mechanism → consequence.
The exact scientific content remains subject-specific.
The craft is learning to establish the causal route before filling the page with facts.
English: Establish the Claim Before Collecting Evidence
In an English response, students can become trapped in quotation hunting.
They search the passage without deciding what they are trying to prove.
A useful first move may be to form a provisional answer to the question in plain language.
Then look for the best evidence.
The claim may change as the evidence is examined.
That is fine.
The first move is provisional, not sacred.
Its purpose is to give the search direction.
When the First Move Fails
This is where judgement appears.
A student tries a route.
It does not open the problem.
What now?
The weak response is often emotional:
“I can’t do this.”
The stronger response is diagnostic:
- Did I misunderstand the target?
- Did I miss a constraint?
- Is this relationship irrelevant?
- Is there a simpler representation?
- Do I have another known route?
- Is the question now consuming more time than it deserves?
This is one reason Examination Craft is a craft rather than a collection of tricks.
The student must observe what the move produced and decide what to do next.
The Two-Minute Trap
Many marks are not lost because the first move was wrong.
They are lost because the student refuses to update after the first move fails.
The student has already invested time.
So they invest more.
Then more.
The original decision becomes expensive to abandon.
A mature student learns a different rule:
A first move earns the right to continue only if the question becomes more solvable.
If clarity is decreasing, reassess.
If time is becoming disproportionate, consider moving on and returning later.
This protects the rest of the paper.
Training the First Move
Ordinary practice often trains complete solutions.
That is necessary.
But students can also practise beginnings.
Take ten questions.
For each question, do not finish it.
Instead:
- identify the job;
- separate given, wanted and constraints;
- write only the first useful move;
- explain why that move is justified;
- state what information the move should reveal next.
This exercise is deceptively powerful.
It exposes whether students genuinely recognise routes or only recognise completed answers after someone else has shown them.
Worked Examples Help Learning — But the Examination Removes the Worked Example
Research on worked examples has repeatedly shown that structured examples can help novices learn complex problem-solving procedures and reduce unproductive search during early learning.
That is useful teaching.
But the examination eventually asks for something different.
The example disappears.
The teacher disappears.
The prompt remains.
So preparation must eventually test whether the student can initiate the route independently.
Not merely follow it when the first three steps have already been supplied.
How Teachers and Parents Can Diagnose a Student Who “Doesn’t Know How to Start”
That sentence can describe several different failures.
- The student does not understand the question.
- The student cannot identify the relevant information.
- The prerequisite knowledge is genuinely missing.
- The student knows the knowledge but cannot retrieve it from the prompt.
- The student knows several possible methods and cannot choose.
- The student expects certainty before acting.
- The student has never practised initiating unfamiliar problems independently.
Those are not interchangeable.
A useful teacher does not rescue too early.
Ask the smallest question that reveals the blockage.
Then help only as much as necessary.
The destination is independent initiation.
The First Move Test
When you cannot see the complete route, ask:
- What do I know for certain?
- What is the question asking me to produce?
- What relevant relationship can I make visible?
- What small action would reduce uncertainty?
- If that action fails, how quickly will I know?
This last question is especially important.
A good first move is not only plausible.
It gives feedback.
