Once a student realises that a route may be failing, another decision appears immediately.
Do I keep going?
Do I change method?
Or do I leave the question and protect the rest of the paper?
This is one of the most consequential examination decisions because all three options can be correct.
Persistence can rescue marks.
Switching can reveal a cleaner route.
Moving on can protect twenty marks from being sacrificed to three.
The craft is not memorising one rule.
It is learning which decision the current evidence supports.
Quick Read
When an exam route becomes uncertain, use three questions. Continue when the route is still producing useful progress and the next step has a clear purpose. Switch when the target is understood and the required capability exists, but the current method is poorly matched or disproportionately costly. Move on when progress has stalled, the missing capability cannot be repaired inside the paper, or the remaining time is more valuable elsewhere. There is no universal number of minutes that decides this for every subject and paper.
The Examination Is a Portfolio of Opportunities
Students naturally experience a paper one question at a time.
But the result is produced by the paper as a whole.
This matters.
A student can make a locally heroic decision and a globally poor one.
For example:
They spend ten additional minutes forcing one difficult question to completion.
They succeed.
But the ten minutes remove the checking time for several easier questions at the end.
The local victory may still reduce the total result.
Examination Craft therefore maintains two views at once:
- Question view: What does this problem need?
- Paper view: What does the whole examination need from the remaining time?
When to Continue
Continue when the route is difficult but alive.
Useful signs include:
- each step is reducing uncertainty;
- the working remains connected to the wanted output;
- the constraints still fit;
- you can explain why the next step should help;
- you are generating new information rather than repeating yourself;
- the time cost is still proportionate to the value and remaining paper.
This is productive persistence.
It is not comfortable.
It is justified.
When to Switch
Switch when the problem is still solvable but the current route has become the wrong vehicle.
Examples include:
- a long algebraic route when a simpler structural observation is available;
- a Science explanation built around the wrong mechanism;
- an English interpretation that no longer fits the strongest evidence;
- an essay plan whose points cannot support the judgement required;
- a checking method that repeats the original reasoning instead of testing it independently.
Switching is not free.
Research on strategy switching finds measurable cognitive costs when people change strategies. So “try another method” should not become a reflex every time progress slows.
A switch should have a reason.
Ideally the new route repairs a known weakness in the old one.
When to Move On
Moving on is appropriate when the current question is no longer the best place to spend the next unit of time.
That may happen because:
- you cannot retrieve a prerequisite fact, formula, method or concept;
- several routes have failed and no new evidence has appeared;
- you are looping;
- the question is consuming time that threatens accessible marks elsewhere;
- you have already secured what legitimate partial progress is available;
- returning later may improve the situation after other parts of the paper are completed.
Moving on is not surrender.
It is resource allocation.
If appropriate, leave a recoverable trail so the question remains cheaper to re-enter later.
Do Not Use a Universal “Minutes Per Mark” Law
Students are often given timing heuristics.
They can be useful for planning.
But a heuristic is not a law.
Different papers have different structures.
Some questions require reading time.
Some marks come in clusters.
Some sections are intentionally more demanding.
Some students work quickly on one modality and slowly on another.
The more defensible rule is:
Know the paper, build a realistic time plan in practice, and use the clock as feedback rather than as a panic trigger.
A Decision Gate for the Examination Hall
When a route stalls, ask in order:
- Is the target clear? If no, reread the job.
- Do I have the required capability? If no, capture what is available and consider moving on.
- Is the current route producing new progress? If yes, continue.
- Can I name a better route and why it is better? If yes, switch.
- Is the next minute better spent elsewhere? If yes, leave recoverably and move.
This is not meant to become a five-question speech inside the student’s head.
It is a training scaffold.
With enough practice, the decision becomes faster and more intuitive because the student has learned what productive and unproductive routes feel like.
Why Time Pressure Makes This Harder
Time pressure does not merely force a student to work faster.
Research shows that it can alter processing and strategy selection. Even relatively mild time pressure can lead people to speed more than necessary, reduce confidence and use poorer strategies.
Under pressure, students may therefore make two opposite mistakes:
- premature abandonment — leaving a difficult but productive route too early;
- stubborn continuation — remaining in an unproductive route because switching feels costly or abandoning invested work feels painful.
The cure is not a slogan.
It is calibrated practice before the examination.
Train Decisions, Not Only Answers
Students usually practise whether they can solve a question.
They should also practise what they do when they cannot solve it immediately.
A useful drill uses a timed mixed set.
Each time the student reaches a stall, they record one decision:
- continued;
- switched;
- moved on.
Afterward, compare the decision with the outcome.
- Did continuing eventually produce progress?
- Was the switch actually better?
- Did moving on protect enough time to matter?
- Did the student abandon a solvable question too quickly?
- Did they stay trapped too long?
Over time, this produces a personal decision history.
That is much more useful than generic advice about “time management”.
The Paper-Level Check
Every difficult-question decision should occasionally reconnect to the whole paper.
Ask:
- How much paper remains?
- How much time remains?
- Which marks are still reasonably accessible?
- Do I still need a checking pass?
- Am I protecting the final section?
This prevents tunnel vision.
The student is no longer negotiating only with one question.
They are managing the examination as a complete system.
What Parents and Tutors Should Diagnose
When a student says “I ran out of time”, reconstruct the decision history rather than stopping at the clock.
- Which question absorbed the excess time?
- When did progress actually stop?
- Did the student notice?
- Was another route available?
- Was the student afraid to leave?
- Did they have a paper-level timing plan?
- Did moving between questions itself create confusion?
This converts “poor time management” into a repairable sequence of decisions.

When a route stalls, do not ask only:
“Can I still solve this?”
Ask:
“Where is the next minute most likely to earn useful progress?”
