A difficult question does not announce:
Your current method is failing. Please stop now.
That would be convenient.
Instead, the student has to infer it.
The algebra grows longer.
The explanation becomes less connected to the data.
The paragraph keeps expanding but never reaches the question.
The student keeps searching the passage and becomes less certain with every reread.
These moments matter because examination time is finite.
A poor route does not only threaten one answer.
If held too long, it can begin consuming the paper.
Quick Read
A failing route is a method, interpretation or answering strategy that is no longer producing useful progress toward the required output. Examination Craft trains students to detect failure signals early: increasing complexity without new information, repeated operations, contradiction with known conditions, growing distance from the question, inability to explain why the next step helps, or time expenditure that is no longer proportionate to the likely value. Detection comes before the decision to continue, switch or move on.
Difficulty Is Not the Same as Route Failure
This distinction is essential.
A hard question can feel uncomfortable while the route is still correct.
A long calculation may genuinely require several steps.
A strong essay paragraph may take time to organise.
A Science explanation may require careful causal reasoning.
Students who abandon every route as soon as it becomes effortful never develop persistence.
So the question is not:
“Does this feel hard?”
It is:
“Is this difficulty still buying useful progress?”
Signal 1: The Route Is Getting More Complicated Without Getting More Informative
Complexity is not automatically bad.
But unnecessary complexity is information.
If a Mathematics solution keeps creating larger expressions without moving closer to the target, reassess.
If a written response keeps adding examples but the central claim remains unclear, reassess.
If a Science explanation accumulates facts without connecting the experimental condition to the observed result, reassess.
A healthy route usually creates structure.
A failing route often creates clutter.
Signal 2: You Cannot Explain Why the Next Step Helps
Ask yourself:
If I do this next step, what should it reveal or move me toward?
If the only answer is “because this is what I usually do”, the route may be running on habit rather than fit.
This is especially dangerous when a familiar-looking question triggers a standard procedure automatically.
Research on mathematical strategy use shows that under time pressure people may rely more heavily on dominant or standard strategies even when a more efficient route exists.
That does not mean every standard strategy is wrong.
It means familiarity is not proof of suitability.
Signal 3: The Route Violates a Constraint
This is one of the strongest failure signals.
You obtain a negative length where the context requires a positive quantity.
Your explanation contradicts the graph.
Your response refers to material outside the required section.
Your argument answers the general topic but not the specified audience, purpose or comparison.
A violated constraint is not always proof the entire approach is wrong.
It may reveal a local error.
But it is a clear instruction to stop autopilot and inspect.
Signal 4: You Are Repeating Yourself
Repeated effort can look like persistence.
Sometimes it is simply looping.
The student rereads the same paragraph again.
Recalculates the same number.
Restates the same point in different words.
Checks the same line without changing the checking method.
Repeated activity without new information is a useful warning.
Ask what new evidence the repetition is expected to generate.
If there is none, change the operation.
Signal 5: You Are Getting Farther from the Wanted Output
Return to the target.
What did the question want?
An angle?
A causal explanation?
A comparison?
A judgement?
A specific inference?
Now look at what your current work is producing.
Is the distance shrinking?
If not, the route deserves inspection.
Signal 6: The Clock Has Become Part of the Error
A route can be intellectually valid and operationally poor.
This is an examination, not an unlimited research session.
A method that will eventually work may still be a bad examination choice if it consumes disproportionate time and a shorter valid route exists.
This is where subject knowledge and paper craft meet.
The student is not asking only:
“Can this route work?”
They are also asking:
“Is this still the best use of the remaining paper?”
The Three-Level Diagnosis
When progress stalls, diagnose at three levels.
Level 1 — Local error
The overall route is sound, but one step is wrong.
Repair the step.
Level 2 — Route error
The method itself is poorly matched to the question.
Switch route.
Level 3 — Capability gap
The student does not currently have the knowledge or procedure required.
No amount of route switching can manufacture that capability during the paper.
At that point the examination decision becomes one of damage control: collect what is legitimately available, leave the question recoverable if useful, and protect the remaining marks.
Do Not Confuse Sunk Cost with Evidence
One of the hardest examination decisions is abandoning a route after already spending time on it.
The student thinks:
“I have already spent four minutes. I cannot stop now.”
But the four minutes are already spent.
The real question is whether the next minute is justified.
Past effort is not evidence that future effort will pay.
This is why route monitoring matters.
A Practice Drill: Stop Before Solving
During practice, deliberately pause students halfway through selected problems.
Ask:
- What has this route produced so far?
- What evidence says it is working?
- What evidence says it may be failing?
- What constraint must still be satisfied?
- What would justify one more step?
This teaches students to monitor the route while it is alive, not only discover afterward that it failed.
What Parents and Tutors Should Diagnose
When a student spends too long on difficult questions, do not label the problem simply as “poor time management”.
Ask whether the deeper weakness is:
- failure to recognise route deterioration;
- fear of abandoning an invested method;
- lack of alternative strategies;
- weak question decomposition;
- missing prerequisite knowledge;
- poor awareness of the remaining paper.
Different causes require different repairs.

Experimental research shows that performance pressure can alter strategy selection, while time pressure can encourage reliance on dominant strategies and reduce strategy quality. Research also finds measurable costs when switching between strategies. Examination Craft therefore does not teach indiscriminate switching. It teaches earlier detection so that switching, persistence or withdrawal can become an evidence-based decision rather than a panic response.

Do not ask whether the question is hard. Ask whether your current route is still producing useful progress.
