How to Turn Reading Into GP Vocabulary: From Articles to Arguments

The one-sentence truth: Reading improves GP vocabulary only when you convert what you read into concepts, relationships and language you can retrieve later.

Use the Top 100 General Paper Vocabulary Words for JC1 as the canonical inventory and the wider JC1–JC2 vocabulary guide as the conceptual parent.

Do not harvest every unfamiliar word

Read for high-value language: words that qualify claims, explain causes, judge evidence, name trade-offs or describe systems. Rare words with little transfer value can be ignored.

Extract concept clusters

An article about housing might yield affordability, scarcity, supply constraint, mobility, distribution, incentive. An article about AI might yield automation, oversight, concentration, accountability, bias, deployment.

Capture the argument job

For every useful word, ask what it helps a writer do: qualify, compare, evaluate, explain, rebut or compress. Attach vocabulary to function.

Record collocations

Do not store credible alone. Store credible evidence, credible source, credible explanation. Do not store mitigate alone. Store mitigate risk, mitigate harm, mitigate impact.

Turn the article into one paragraph

After reading, close the source and write one short paragraph explaining the article’s main mechanism using three newly harvested terms. This forces retrieval and synthesis.

Transfer across topics

A word becomes high-value when it moves. Use resilience in climate, economic and social contexts. Use accountability in politics, media and AI. Use equity in education, healthcare and transport.

The 10-minute reading routine

  1. Read one serious article.
  2. Extract three concepts.
  3. Record one collocation per concept.
  4. Write the author’s central claim in your own words.
  5. Write one counterargument or limitation.
  6. Use the vocabulary in a fresh topic before ending.

The deeper lesson

Reading becomes vocabulary training when ideas stop being trapped inside the article. The aim is portability: concepts that return later when a different question demands them.
