Secondary 3 Vocabulary for Evidence: Claim, Support, Significance and Conclusion

Evidence is not a decoration added after an opinion. It is the bridge between a claim and a reason another person should accept it. At Secondary 3, students increasingly need vocabulary for different evidence types, strengths, limitations and conclusions.

This guide complements the Top 100 Vocabulary List Secondary 3 Grade A1, especially words such as empirical, inference, evaluate, justify, conclusion and synthesis.

Claim

A claim is a statement that can be supported, challenged or qualified. “Exercise is beneficial” is a broad claim. “Regular moderate exercise can improve cardiovascular fitness” is narrower and easier to support.

Evidence

Evidence includes observations, measurements, documents, examples, testimony and other information relevant to a claim. The key word is relevant. A true fact can still be irrelevant to the question.

Empirical evidence

Empirical evidence comes from observation or experiment. It is especially useful when a claim concerns what actually happens rather than what should happen.

Anecdotal evidence

Anecdotes are individual experiences. They can illustrate possibility and human impact, but they usually cannot establish how common an effect is.

Corroboration

Evidence is corroborated when independent information supports the same conclusion. Multiple sources can increase confidence when they are genuinely independent and credible.

Reliability and validity

Reliability concerns consistency. Validity concerns whether the evidence or method actually measures what it claims to measure. A questionnaire can produce consistent answers and still measure the wrong thing.

Representative evidence

Evidence drawn from a narrow group may not represent a wider population. Scope matters when moving from specific cases to general claims.

Support is not enough; explain significance

After presenting evidence, answer “So what?” A statistic about travel time matters only when you explain how it affects access, cost, productivity or another relevant outcome.

Interpretation connects evidence to claim

Evidence does not interpret itself. Two writers may agree on the data and disagree about what it means. State the reasoning connecting the evidence to your conclusion.

Assumptions

An assumption is something the argument takes for granted. If a proposal assumes every student has reliable internet access, that assumption should be examined before accepting the conclusion.

Counterevidence

Strong reasoning does not hide inconvenient evidence. Counterevidence may weaken, qualify or redirect a claim. Addressing it often increases credibility.

Evidence versus proof

Students often write “this proves” when “this supports” is more accurate. Proof is an exceptionally strong standard. Most real-world evidence changes confidence rather than creating absolute certainty.

Primary and secondary evidence

Primary material comes directly from the event, observation or original source. Secondary sources analyse or report it. Both can be useful; their roles differ.

Authority is not infallibility

Expert sources deserve attention because of relevant knowledge, but expertise does not make every claim correct. Examine method, evidence and whether the speaker is operating inside their field.

Worked evidence chain

Claim: Later school start times may improve student alertness. Evidence: Students report more sleep and show improved morning attention after schedule changes. Interpretation: Additional sleep provides a plausible mechanism. Qualification: results may differ where students simply stay awake later. Conclusion: later starts can help, but implementation conditions matter.

Evidence in comprehension

When answering inference questions, quote or paraphrase the clue that supports your conclusion. This prevents unsupported interpretation.

Evidence in composition

Narrative evidence is behavioural. Instead of calling a character conscientious, show the repeated actions that justify the label.

Evidence in oral discussion

Signal evidence type naturally: “From my own experience…” or “If broader data shows the same pattern…” This distinguishes anecdote from general evidence.

The evidence audit

  1. What is the claim?
  2. What evidence supports it?
  3. Is the evidence relevant?
  4. How strong and representative is it?
  5. What assumptions connect evidence to claim?
  6. What counterevidence exists?
  7. What conclusion is proportionate?

Practice routine

Take one claim from an article. Create four columns: evidence, source, limitation, significance. Then rewrite the conclusion so its certainty matches the evidence.

Evidence becomes stronger not simply by becoming more numerous, but by becoming more relevant, representative and independent. Ten versions of the same weak source do not automatically outweigh one direct, well-designed observation.

Four Questions for Every Piece of Evidence

  1. Relevance: does it actually bear on the claim?
  2. Quality: how was it produced or observed?
  3. Scope: how far can it reasonably generalise?
  4. Independence: is it genuinely new support or repeated reporting of the same source?

Triangulation

Triangulation means examining a question through more than one evidence route. Survey responses may reveal reported experience, behavioural data may show actual patterns, and interviews may explain mechanisms. Agreement across different evidence types can strengthen confidence because each method has different weaknesses.

Evidence Can Be Strong but Irrelevant

A perfectly accurate statistic about national internet use does not necessarily answer whether one school’s online homework system is equitable. Relevance connects the evidence to the exact claim being evaluated.

The Conclusion Ceiling

Your conclusion should never be stronger than the evidence beneath it. A small unrepresentative sample can support possibility or a local pattern; it cannot automatically justify a universal claim. Vocabulary such as suggests, supports, corroborates and remains inconclusive helps express that ceiling.

  2. Rank each for relevance and scope.
  3. Check whether any sources are actually dependent on the same original evidence.
  4. Write the strongest conclusion the combined evidence permits.

Evidence literacy means knowing not only what supports a claim, but how much weight that support deserves.
