There are controls that make a hypothesis slightly less comfortable.
Then there are controls that force the whole model to grow up.
Salzburg University Library M I 36 belongs to the second category.
It is an astronomical–astrological–medical miscellany produced in Laubach in Hesse in 1425: exactly inside the Voynich parchment window, written largely by Konrad von Butzbach, with medicine, astrology, prognostics, plant knowledge, technical recipes, diagrams, multilingual material and a remarkable catalogue of real plant impressions.
If Padua is going to remain special, it has to beat this.

The control becomes powerful because the internal breadth is unusually high.
The Bavarian Academy’s KdiH database and Handschriftencensus identify material including:
- astronomical material;
- astrological material;
- medical material;
- prognostication;
- palmistry;
- planetary characterology;
- technical recipes;
- plant knowledge;
- women’s-health material;
- tables and sketches;
- practical medicine.
This is not a modern library shelf.
It is a working medieval information stack.
One Codex Can Hold Several Ways of Knowing
The manuscript contains learned traditions beside practical instructions.
Celestial theory sits beside medicine.
Prognostics sit beside plant knowledge.
Text sits beside diagrams.
Latin sits beside German, and the plant catalogue can include Italian as well.
This means mixed representation is not evidence of incoherence.
A specialised receiver can collect heterogeneous technical interfaces because the receiver supplies the unity.
This is exactly the kind of model the Voynich manuscript needs to survive or reject through its own structure.
The Planet Children Are a Strong Zodiac Control
M I 36 includes material on people born under planetary influences.
This matters because zodiacal and planetary imagery can be tied to human types without becoming modern “astrology pages” in a simple sense.
A celestial diagram may organise:
- time;
- character;
- prognosis;
- medical timing;
- social or bodily classifications.
Voynich’s zodiac figures should therefore be tested against several possible technical jobs, not named from iconography alone.
The Palmistry Page Is a Representation Lesson
The manuscript contains a Pseudo-Aristotelian chiromancy text accompanied by a labelled drawing of a hand.
The drawing maps lines, fingers, planets and interpreted signs onto one bodily surface.
This is a powerful comparator for how technical knowledge can use the human body as a diagram.
The body is simultaneously:
- an anatomical object;
- a coordinate surface;
- a celestial correspondence map;
- an interpretive interface.
That does not explain Voynich’s human figures.
It proves that a Central-European technical manuscript could use human imagery for structured non-narrative information.
The Water-Conduit Instructions Are Almost Unfair
KdiH records technological and chemical-alchemical recipes and instructions in M I 36, including material concerning pump and water-conduit construction.
This is an extraordinary control because Voynich’s tubes and channels are often used to support balneological or hydraulic interpretations.
Laubach 1425 demonstrates that technical water-conduit knowledge can coexist in the same manuscript universe as astrology, medicine and plants.
But the correct inference is not:
Voynich tubes are German pumps.
It is:
tubes + medicine + astrology + plants is not a uniquely Paduan feature bundle.
The Plant Catalogue Changes the Herbal Comparison
M I 36 includes a substantial plant catalogue.
Handschriftencensus records the plant material as using Italian, Latin and German.
This matters because plant knowledge itself travels across linguistic interfaces.
A northern manuscript can preserve Italian plant terminology.
Therefore an Italian-looking plant name in a future decipherment would not automatically localise production to Italy.
Language can be imported with knowledge.
The Nature Prints Are a Radical Comparator
Handschriftencensus records 84 nature prints in M I 36.
These are not ordinary drawn herbal images.
Plant material itself was impressed to create visual records.
This is important because it reveals another solution to the plant-representation problem.
A medieval technical reader does not have one universal visual convention for a plant.
Plant knowledge can be represented by:
- stylised drawing;
- naturalistic drawing;
- diagram;
- label;
- description;
- physical impression.
This makes visual style an even weaker proxy for geography unless the tradition is tightly controlled.
The Macer and Ortolf Layers Show Textual Inheritance
Handschriftencensus identifies an excerpt from Ortolf von Baierland’s medical work and a German prose adaptation of the Macer herbal tradition.
These are inherited textual systems being selected and reassembled into a local compilation.
The manuscript therefore demonstrates:
older authority → vernacular adaptation → excerpt → personal compilation.
This is precisely the transformation model we have been using for Paduan receptaria and medical networks.
Again, the operation is not local to Padua.
The Women’s-Health Material Adds Another Voynich-Relevant Domain
M I 36 includes a German Secreta mulierum tradition and other related material.
This matters because Voynich’s many female-presenting human figures have often encouraged gynaecological interpretations.
Laubach 1425 proves only the broad possibility:
a medical-astrological miscellany can include specialised material concerning women.
It does not identify Voynich’s figures as obstetrical or gynaecological.
The Manuscript Is Materially Mixed Too
M I 36 uses both parchment and paper.
Its layout changes across the codex.
There are multiple hands and later additions.
This makes the codex itself an evolving object.
That is a useful control for Voynich’s quire disruptions, multiple hands and section differences.
The correct test is not whether both books have “mixed content”.
It is whether the material boundaries and content boundaries behave similarly.
Laubach Is Not Prague or Vienna
The manuscript was written in Laubach/Wetterau, in Hesse.
It is now preserved in Salzburg.
This distinction matters because current repository is not production place.
It also broadens the Central-European control beyond university capitals.
Technical-medical compilation can happen outside Padua, Prague or Vienna.
The manuscript ecology is more distributed than a city-centred theory suggests.
The Feature-Bundle Audit
Now compare the broad categories often invoked for Voynich:
- plants: yes, strong plant catalogue;
- medicine: yes;
- astrology: yes;
- astronomy: yes;
- human-body diagram: yes, palmistry;
- prognostics: yes;
- technical water systems: yes, conduit/pump instructions;

This is a brutal result for low-resolution localisation.
Almost the entire thematic bundle can occur in a German manuscript dated 1425.
What Still Makes Voynich Different?
Now the comparison becomes genuinely useful.
M I 36 is readable.
Its source traditions can be identified.
Its languages can be classified.
Its contents are heterogeneous but retrievable.
Voynich remains different in the exact places that now deserve priority:
- unknown script;
- unusual repetition and word structure;
- opaque retrieval system;
- distinctive image grammar;
- foldout architecture;
- absence of obvious familiar numerals and headings;
- lack of secure textual ancestry.
Those are the high-information differences.
What Laubach 1425 Can Legitimately Support
- Astronomy, astrology, medicine, plants and technical instruction could coexist in one German codex inside the Voynich window.
- Specialist manuscripts could be multilingual.
- Human-body diagrams could encode planetary and prognostic relationships.
- Technical water-conduit knowledge could coexist with medicine and astrology.
- Plant representation could be radically experimental.
- Working compilations could combine inherited texts, vernacular adaptation, recipes and later additions.
What It Cannot Support
- that Voynich is German;
- that Voynich was produced in Hesse;
- that its tubes are pumps;
- that its women are palmistry or gynaecology figures;
- that its plants derive from Macer;
- that its script conceals German.
What Padua Must Beat Now
After M I 36, Padua cannot win on subject bundle.
It cannot win on mixed disciplines.
It cannot win on plants plus astrology.
It cannot win on tubes plus medicine.
It must win on things harder to copy across geography:
- script;
- codicology;
- local parameters;
- specific textual descent;
- production technique;
- provenance.
Laubach 1425 moves the contest from “what subjects are present?” to “what exact historical system produced this object?” That is a major improvement.

M I 36 is the control the Padua hypothesis needed.
It does not make Padua wrong.
It makes weak reasons for Padua unusable.
A German physician’s 1425 miscellany can hold astronomy, astrology, medicine, prognostics, women’s health, plants, diagrams, recipes and water-conduit instructions. The Voynich problem is therefore not the existence of an unusual subject combination. The problem is the peculiar representation system that binds Beinecke MS 408 together.
