The Voynich Manuscript was not written by one hand.
Lisa Fagin Davis’s 2020 digital-palaeographic study identified five distinct scribal hands across Beinecke MS 408.
That is one of the strongest object-level results in modern Voynich research.
It is also easy to misuse.
Five scribes tell us that several trained writers participated. Five scribes do not tell us that the manuscript was written in Padua, Venice, Prague, Vienna or any other particular place.

The Five-Scribe Result Changes the Production Model
A single anonymous author can be imagined almost anywhere.
Five scribes imply organisation.
Several people had access to the same script system.
They wrote different portions of the manuscript.
They were sufficiently coordinated for the codex to behave as one production project.
This makes some production models less likely.
- A purely private one-person notebook becomes harder to sustain.
- A last-minute personal cipher becomes harder to sustain.
- A collaborative workshop, household, institutional or commissioned project becomes more plausible.
But collaboration still does not localise geography.
The Script Is Invented, So Glyph Shape Is a Dangerous Localiser
Davis describes the Voynich glyph system as carefully written and without obvious precedent or model.
This is crucial.
If the script were ordinary Gothic cursive, humanistic minuscule or another known script, palaeographers could compare standard letter forms directly across regions and dates.
Voynich removes that easy route.
An invented glyph can be shaped however its designer chooses.
Therefore:
glyph resemblance is weaker than scribal habit.
What Scribal Habit Can Preserve
Even when letters are invented, scribes remain trained bodies.
They hold pens in learned ways.
They manage lines, margins and spacing according to familiar habits.
They may import conventions unconsciously.
- stroke direction;
- pen angle;
- ligature habits;
- word spacing;
- line filling;
- paragraph opening;
- abbreviation-like compression;
- baseline behaviour;
- placement around drawings.
Those features may carry regional information even when the glyph inventory does not.
The Correct Palaeographic Sequence
The weak sequence is:
this glyph resembles an Italian abbreviation → therefore northern Italy → therefore Padua.
The stronger sequence is:
identify hand → reconstruct ductus → identify stable scribal behaviours → compare against dated control populations → measure regional discrimination → only then ask whether Padua survives.
Five Hands Are Five Independent Opportunities
The multiple-scribe result actually improves localisation potential.
If all five hands independently show habits clustering with one regional scribal culture, the evidence becomes stronger.
If the hands divide geographically, the production story becomes more complex.
For example:
- three hands could look northern Italian;
- two could look transalpine;
- one hand could be the script designer while others are trained copyists.
That would suggest a collaborative environment with mixed training backgrounds.
Five Scribes Do Not Mean Five Authors
Writing hand and intellectual authorship are different.
A scribe can copy someone else’s text.
Several scribes can copy one author.
One compiler can coordinate several scribes.
A workshop can divide labour by quire or section.
Therefore the five-hand result should not be translated into “five authors” or “five experts” without additional evidence.
The Hand–Section Relationship Is One of the Highest-Value Tests
If scribes map cleanly onto content regions, the production system may have been modular.
If the same hand crosses herbal, pharmaceutical and technical sections, the intellectual divisions may be less rigid than modern labels suggest.
Existing hand assignments already show some scribes crossing conventional section boundaries.
This is important because it implies the scribal production map and the modern subject map are not identical.
Could Padua Support Five Scribes?
Of course.
Padua had court, university, monastic and professional manuscript environments capable of collaborative book production.
But so did Venice, Bologna, Pavia, Prague and Vienna.
Therefore the collaboration scale has almost no localising value on its own.
The question is whether the scribes’ habits point to a particular production ecology.
Northern Italy Is a Hypothesis Level, Not Padua
Recent Yale University Press synthesis frames the manuscript as an early-fifteenth-century northern-Italian production involving five scribes.
That is useful as a current scholarly orientation.
It still leaves enormous geographic space.
- Padua;
- Venice;
- Bologna;
- Ferrara;
- Lombardy;
- other north-Italian centres and mobile workshops.
The Padua hypothesis must descend several resolution levels below “northern Italy”.
Central Europe Still Must Remain in the Control Set
Our matched-control cycle has shown strong medical and astronomical manuscript environments in Prague, Vienna, Klosterneuburg and the German-speaking lands.
Therefore an Italian-oriented palaeographic hypothesis needs actual discriminators.
It cannot rely on content bundle.
If scribal behaviour proves transalpine, the Padua production hypothesis should weaken sharply even if Paduan intellectual influence remains possible.
The Script-Geography Test
- Use Davis’s five-hand segmentation as the starting control.
- Reconstruct ductus separately for each hand.
- Catalogue non-glyph habits: spacing, line management, punctuation-like signs and abbreviation-like compression.
- Build dated palaeographic control sets from Padua, Venice, Bologna, Lombardy, Austria, Bohemia and southern Germany.
- Blind the content labels during comparison.
- Measure whether all five hands cluster in one region.
- Separate script design from scribal execution.
- Keep intellectual ancestry independent from physical writing location.
What the Five-Scribe Result Can Legitimately Support
- The manuscript was a collaborative scribal production.
- The script system was shared by several writers.
- Hand-level analysis can provide independent production clues.
- The production architecture is more organised than a one-person improvisation model suggests.
What It Cannot Support
- that the five scribes were five authors;
- that they were university professors;
- that they were Paduan;
- that glyph shape alone localises northern Italy;
- that a northern-Italian hypothesis identifies Padua specifically.

They are five new instruments.
If all five hands independently point toward the same scribal ecology, geography will sharpen. Until then, “five scribes” tells us how the manuscript was made—not where.
