Voynich and Padua | The Production Path Hypothesis: What If the Manuscript Has More Than One Geography?

The oldest localisation question in Voynich research is usually asked in the singular.

Where was the manuscript made?

Padua?

Venice?

Prague?

Vienna?

Germany?

Northern Italy?

That formulation may be too simple.

The recent object-level work in the Voynich and Padua programme has produced a more difficult possibility: the manuscript may have a production path rather than one historical coordinate.

This does not mean we are claiming the Voynich was assembled in several countries. We do not have that evidence.

It means the comparator field now demonstrates that medieval books can separate several things modern readers instinctively collapse:

  • where an intellectual tradition originated;
  • where a text was composed;
  • where a scribe was trained;
  • where a codicological unit was copied;
  • where images were added;
  • where separate units were assembled;
  • where the book was bound or rebound;
  • where it was first owned;
  • where later readers received it.

The Production Path Hypothesis does not say the Voynich has multiple proven geographies. It says localisation should be modelled as a sequence of possible coordinates until the physical object proves that they collapse to one place.


Why the Single-Dot Model Became Uncomfortable

Several recent controls forced this change.

Pal. lat. 1265 is catalogued to Padua and southern Germany in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. The manuscript itself therefore resists a clean one-city description.

Pal. lat. 1268 is a Viennese manuscript from 1434 containing Paduan-linked medical authorities including members of the Santasofia network. Paduan intellectual content can therefore live inside a non-Paduan host.

Pal. lat. 1284 contains Niccolò Santasofia’s Receptarium, yet the catalogue heading does not give the whole object a single Paduan production coordinate.

And Pal. lat. 1221 is a German receiver manuscript containing Montagnana, Cermisone and Marsilio Santasofia.

These are not exceptions to be explained away.

They are evidence that medieval medical knowledge travelled through physical books, copied texts, students, teachers, collectors and later compilers.

Codicology Already Has the Language for This

Modern codicology distinguishes between a multiple-text manuscript planned as one production unit and a composite manuscript formed by formerly independent codicological units brought together later. The distinction matters because several texts in one binding do not guarantee that the parts were produced at one time, in one place or by one scribe.

The Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures describes multiple-text manuscripts as planned production units, while composites can consist of independent codicological units joined later. Malachi Beit-Arié’s codicological framework likewise emphasises the archaeology of the codex: the surviving book can contain strata produced independently in different places or periods.

This is not a Voynich-specific trick.

It is normal manuscript method.

The Production Path Has Several Coordinates

For the Voynich, we can define a neutral path without assuming that every stage is different.

In a simple manuscript, P0 through P6 may cluster tightly.

In another manuscript, they may not.

The point of the model is not to multiply places unnecessarily. It is to stop us from assuming equality before the evidence demonstrates it.

The Five-Scribe Result Makes This More Than a Philosophical Exercise

Lisa Fagin Davis’s palaeographical study identified five scribal hands in the Voynich Manuscript. Her analysis also found collaborative patterns across bifolia rather than a simple one-scribe-per-section structure.

This does not prove five workshops or five regions.

Quite the opposite: collaboration may point toward a coordinated production environment.

But once several hands are present, scribal identity becomes a separate variable from codex identity.

We should ask whether all hands share:

  • the same training conventions;
  • the same ink preparation;
  • the same page-planning habits;
  • the same parchment units;
  • the same textual dialect;
  • the same production sequence.

If yes, a single workshop becomes stronger.

If not, the path model becomes more interesting.

A Bifolium Is a Better Production Unit Than a Folio Number

The modern reader encounters folio 1, folio 2, folio 3.

The maker handled folded skins.

That difference matters.

Our earlier Bifolium as a Production Unit work already showed why bifolia, not current page order, should anchor production reconstruction.

The path model extends that principle outward.

Instead of asking where “the Voynich” was made as if the codex arrived whole, ask where each coherent production unit was prepared, written, illustrated and assembled.

Only after those unit-level answers converge should we compress them into one geography.

Binding Is a Separate Historical Event

A book can be rebound.

Units can be reordered.

Independent booklets can be joined.

A new owner can impose a new physical sequence on older material.

This is why the Binding Problem and the Original-Order Problem sit inside provenance rather than outside it.

The place where the current codex was assembled need not be the place where every constituent unit originated.

Ownership Is Not Production Either

Manuscript description standards routinely distinguish origin from provenance. The Stanford manuscript-description principles explicitly separate evidence of origin from evidence of provenance; TEI manuscript encoding similarly separates production circumstances from later provenance and acquisition.

This matters because the Voynich’s later central-European custody cannot simply be projected backwards into its place of manufacture.

Likewise, if we eventually find a fifteenth-century owner in Padua, that would not automatically prove the manuscript was produced there.

Ownership would be a major bridge.

But it would still be one coordinate in the path.

The Path Model Changes How Padua Competes With Vienna and Germany

Before the recent object work, localisation was easy to frame as competition:

Padua versus Vienna versus Prague versus Germany.

The production-path model allows a different possibility.

A text can be Paduan-linked and copied in Vienna.

A scribe trained north of the Alps can work in northern Italy.

A medical booklet can be copied in Padua and assembled later with a German unit.

A finished book can then enter a central-European collection.

These are hypotheses, not facts about Voynich.

But they are historically legitimate state spaces that a localisation method should not rule out by assumption.

The Model Becomes Useful Only If It Can Be Falsified

A flexible path can explain anything unless we constrain it.

So the Production Path Hypothesis needs explicit failure conditions.

  • If all scribal hands share one local palaeographical profile, multiple scribal-training coordinates become less necessary.
  • If parchment preparation and ruling are uniform across the manuscript, multiple material-production sites become less likely.
  • If ink composition and writing sequence are homogeneous across hands, one coordinated workshop becomes stronger.
  • If quire construction shows the manuscript was planned as one integrated production unit, later assembly of independent booklets becomes weaker.
  • If image underdrawing and text consistently interact across bifolia, separate text/image production phases become less likely.
  • If a documentary record securely identifies production in one workshop, the path collapses substantially.

The path model should shrink whenever evidence permits.

Its purpose is to prevent premature compression, not to preserve complexity for its own sake.

The eduKate Production-Path Test

  1. Use bifolia and codicological units as the first physical partition.
  2. Assign scribal hands independently of semantic sections.
  3. Record parchment-side pattern, ruling, pricking, damage and repairs per unit.
  4. Record ink and pigment sequence where technical analysis permits.
  5. Record visual-program transitions independently of text clusters.
  6. Map each unit against dated regional comparators.
  7. Estimate whether one region explains all units without special pleading.
  8. If not, allow a path model and specify the minimum number of production coordinates required.
  9. Penalise every extra coordinate unless it explains independent evidence.
  10. Collapse coordinates whenever new evidence shows they are the same.
  11. Keep later ownership and reception as separate path stages.

What This Does to the Padua Hypothesis

It makes Padua both stronger and weaker.

Stronger, because a Paduan contribution no longer has to explain every later-looking or transalpine feature in the manuscript.

Weaker, because finding one Paduan-looking layer no longer entitles us to label the entire codex Paduan.

The hypothesis becomes more exact:

Which Voynich production layers, if any, require Padua—and which can be explained as inherited, mobile, imported or later?

What the Production Path Hypothesis Does Not Claim

  • It does not claim the Voynich was made in several countries.
  • It does not claim the five scribes came from five regions.
  • It does not claim the manuscript is a later composite volume.
  • It does not claim Padua is one confirmed stage in the path.
  • It does not turn mixed comparators into mixed Voynich provenance.
  • It does not fill the missing fifteenth-century ownership bridge.

The old localisation question wants one answer:

Where was the Voynich made?

The object may eventually allow that simplification.

Until it does, the more disciplined question is:

What sequence of places, people, materials and production events is minimally required to explain the surviving codex—and which of those coordinates can the evidence actually name?
