Written in the Worcestershire area in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, the manuscript contains a contents list recording 129 recipes and then the recipe collection itself. The entries address practical ailments and treatments, and the book uses conspicuous coloured decoration around catchwords and section transitions.
This is exactly the sort of control the Voynich starred and recipe-like pages need.
MS.5262 shows what large-scale medical retrieval looks like when the recipe function is known: a list, repeated entry architecture, navigational cues and a body of practical instructions. Voynich must be tested against that structure, not merely called a recipe book because its final pages look list-like.

The most important feature of MS.5262 is not any one remedy.
It is the fact that the manuscript explicitly builds a map of its own contents.
A user does not need to read every recipe sequentially.

The distinction matters for Voynich because the manuscript appears to lack a secure readable index, title or contents apparatus.

Before interpreting them symbolically, ask whether they perform retrieval or continuity work.

The contents section ends with a coloured drawing of a swaddled baby in a cradle.
Elsewhere the manuscript includes saints and animals in decorative contexts.
This is another useful control.
Not every image in a medical book is a literal medical diagram.
Some images decorate, mark sections, aid memory or reflect devotional culture.
A Voynich theory that assigns technical meaning to every star, creature or flourish may therefore over-read the visual layer.

One hundred and twenty-nine indexed recipes are enough to study recurring grammar.
We can measure:

- ingredient density;

If the Voynich section is truly recipe-based, it should resemble functional recipe corpora more closely than arbitrary short-paragraph prose.
The Recipe System Is Not the Same Thing as the Pharmaceutical Image System

One section may identify substances visually.
Another may provide written preparations.
A third may index conditions.
Known medical manuscripts often distribute those jobs across different textual modules.
Therefore the absence of jars beside every recipe is not evidence against a medical workflow.

MS.5262 belongs to the Worcestershire area.
Its recipe architecture is therefore not Paduan.
