Coherence is the quality of forming a logically connected and understandable whole. Common combinations include paragraph coherence, coherence of argument and improve coherence. Academic nouns often fail in writing not because students have never seen them, but because several nearby nouns feel interchangeable. They are not. The contrast pairs below are designed as decision rules. Each pair asks a different question. When the difference becomes automatic, students stop reaching for vague nouns such as thing, point, idea and problem.
1. Evidence vs example
An example makes an idea concrete. Evidence changes how strongly a claim should be believed. A story about one student may illustrate a difficulty but may not be enough evidence for a claim about all students. Maren asks, “Does this information merely show what the idea could look like, or does it actually support the conclusion?” If it only illustrates, call it an example.
2. Claim vs fact
A claim is something asserted. A fact is a proposition treated as established because it can be verified to the relevant standard. “This programme improves learning” is a claim until evidence supports it. Calling something a claim does not imply it is false; it identifies its argumentative role.
3. Argument vs opinion
An opinion is a view. An argument is a view supported by reasons and evidence arranged toward a conclusion. “Uniforms are better” is an opinion. “Uniforms reduce visible income differences and simplify dress expectations, therefore they can reduce some social pressure” is an argument. The difference is structure and support.
4. Premise vs assumption
A premise is functioning as a starting proposition in an argument. An assumption is something accepted without full proof, often silently. A premise can be stated openly: “All participants had equal training.” The same proposition becomes an assumption if the writer relies on it without stating or testing it.
5. Inference vs implication
An implication is what information suggests or what follows from it. An inference is the conclusion a reader or thinker draws. Texts imply; readers infer. Results can have practical implications; researchers infer explanations from evidence. Keeping the direction straight prevents a common comprehension error.
6. Conclusion vs summary
A summary compresses what has already been said. A conclusion states what the reasoning or evidence warrants. A report summary may list the methods and findings. Its conclusion may state that the intervention appears effective only under specific conditions. A conclusion should not merely repeat the introduction.
7. Criterion vs constraint
A criterion is a standard used to judge options. A constraint limits which options are possible. If cost, fairness and reliability are criteria, a deadline and fixed budget may be constraints. Leonie uses the distinction in planning: first identify what good looks like; then identify what cannot be changed.
8. Validity vs reliability
Reliability concerns consistency. Validity concerns whether the right thing is being measured or whether the inference is warranted. A test can give the same score every time and still be invalid if it measures memorisation when the target is reasoning. Consistency is not enough.
9. Credibility vs reliability
Credibility is broader trustworthiness. Reliability usually stresses consistent dependability. A source may be credible because its author, evidence and method are transparent. A measuring instrument may be reliable because it produces stable results. Use credibility more often for trust in people, sources and accounts; reliability for repeatable dependability.
10. Relevance vs significance
Relevance asks whether information connects to the question. Significance asks whether it matters and how much. A statistic can be highly significant in a different debate yet irrelevant to the question being answered. First test relevance; then assess significance.
11. Limitation vs failure
A limitation narrows what a method or conclusion can do. A failure means the intended function or objective was not achieved. A small sample limits generalisation but does not make the entire study a failure. Naming limitations accurately produces more mature evaluation than dismissing work wholesale.
12. Uncertainty vs ambiguity
Uncertainty is incomplete confidence or knowledge. Ambiguity is the presence of more than one reasonable meaning. “The estimate may be between 30 and 40” expresses uncertainty. “Bank” could mean a financial institution or a river edge; that is ambiguity. One concerns confidence, the other meaning.

14. Cause vs factor
A factor contributes to a situation. A cause makes a stronger claim about production of an effect. Sleep, motivation and prior knowledge may all be factors in performance. Showing that one factor causes a change requires stronger evidence. Use factor when causal certainty is not established.
15. Cause vs mechanism
A cause identifies what produces or contributes to an outcome. A mechanism explains how the cause produces the effect. “Reduced sleep contributes to poor recall” names a causal relation. “Reduced sleep disrupts consolidation, leaving memory traces less stable” proposes a mechanism. Mechanism deepens explanation.
16. Correlation vs causation
Correlation means variables change together. Causation means change in one contributes to producing change in another. Ice-cream sales and sunburn may correlate because hot weather affects both. The correlation does not mean ice cream causes sunburn. This distinction is one of the most valuable nouns in evidence-based reasoning.
17. Variable vs factor
A variable is defined so it can take different values in analysis or measurement. A factor is a broader contributing element. “Study time in minutes” is a variable. “Family support” may be treated as a factor until it is operationalised into a measurable variable.
18. Outcome vs consequence
An outcome is any result of a process and is often neutral. A consequence emphasises what follows from an action or condition and can carry stronger evaluative weight. “Exam score” may be the outcome measure. “Reduced course access” may be an unintended consequence of a policy.
19. Trend vs pattern
A trend has direction across time or ordered observations. A pattern is any recurring regularity. An upward trend is a pattern, but alternating high-low values are a pattern without a simple upward or downward trend. Use trend when direction is central.
20. Variation vs distribution
Variation describes differences among values or cases. Distribution describes how those values are spread. Saying scores vary tells us there are differences. Showing that most scores cluster near 70 while a few are very low describes the distribution. Distribution gives shape to variation.
21. Magnitude vs significance
Magnitude is size or strength. Significance can mean importance or a statistical threshold. A tiny effect can be statistically significant in a very large sample. A large effect can be practically significant even before formal testing. Do not use significance as a vague synonym for size.
22. Frequency vs rate
Frequency counts how often something occurs. Rate relates occurrence to time, population or another denominator. Twenty errors is a frequency. Twenty errors in 100 attempts is a 20% error rate. Rates make comparisons fairer when exposure differs.
23. Method vs methodology
A method is a procedure. Methodology is the organised rationale and system governing method choice. “Interviewing 20 students” is a method. Explaining why interviews are suitable, how participants are selected and how responses will be analysed belongs to methodology.
24. Data vs evidence
Data are recorded observations or measurements. They become evidence when used in relation to a claim. A table of temperatures is data. The same table becomes evidence if it is used to support a claim about climate or experimental conditions. Evidence is a role, not just a format.
25. Model vs framework
A model represents how something works, behaves or relates. A framework organises categories, principles or criteria for analysis or action. A traffic-flow model predicts movement. A transport-evaluation framework might compare cost, access, emissions and reliability.
26. Interpretation vs explanation
An interpretation assigns meaning or significance. Transfer Lab 1: English comprehension — evidence, inference, implication, context
Iona reads a passage in which a character checks the clock six times, gives short answers and repeatedly asks whether the door is locked. The actions are evidence. The reader’s judgement that the character is anxious is an inference. If that anxiety changes how the later decision is understood, that is an implication. The surrounding conversation supplies the context that determines whether the actions signal fear, impatience or secrecy.
A strong comprehension response therefore has an internal chain: evidence → inference → implication → context check. The nouns help students avoid a common error: jumping directly from one detail to a confident interpretation without showing the reasoning bridge.
Transfer Lab 2: argumentative writing — claim, premise, assumption, justification
Maren writes a paragraph arguing that public transport should receive greater investment. The claim is the position. The premise might be that transport policy should maximise access. An unstated belief that increased funding will actually improve service could be an assumption. The evidence connecting investment to access becomes part of the justification.
When students name these parts, revision becomes easier. A weak paragraph may have a claim but no evidence, a premise but no justification, or an assumption that has never been tested. Academic nouns turn “this paragraph feels weak” into a diagnosable problem.
Transfer Lab 3: Science — variable, condition, method, validity
A Science investigation changes the amount of light given to plants. Light exposure is a variable. The bright and dim groups are experimental conditions. The procedure used to grow and measure the plants is the method. If temperature differs between groups, the validity of a causal conclusion becomes weaker.
Leonie uses a compact checklist: What varies? What conditions are compared? What method produces the data? What threatens validity? The nouns organise the experiment before they appear in the written answer.
Transfer Lab 4: Mathematics — estimate, probability, rate, magnitude
A rough calculation before solving is an estimate. The likelihood of an event is a probability. Errors per hundred attempts form a rate. The size of a change is its magnitude. These nouns prevent vague number commentary such as “it went up a lot” or “it probably happens”.
Maren might write: “The estimate places the answer near 500. The exact calculation gives 487. The error rate falls from 12% to 7%, a reduction of moderate magnitude.” Each noun specifies a different mathematical object.

A map may show the distribution of hospitals across a region. Data across years may show a trend toward urban concentration. The policy question may concern access: can people actually reach and use the service? Essay architecture: nouns that tell you what each sentence is doing
One reason academic nouns matter is that they can label the parts of a paragraph. If a student can identify the claim, evidence, reasoning, qualification and conclusion, the paragraph becomes editable. Without those labels, revision often becomes cosmetic.
The five-part analytical paragraph
- Claim: state the position or interpretive point.
- Evidence: provide information that bears on the claim.
- Reasoning: explain the relationship between evidence and claim.
- Qualification: limit the claim to what the evidence actually supports.
- Conclusion: state what follows and why it matters.
Example: “Public transport investment can improve employment access in poorly connected districts. Travel-time data show that residents near new rail links reach major employment centres more quickly. This evidence matters because reduced travel time enlarges the practical set of jobs a resident can reach. However, the effect depends on fare affordability and feeder connectivity. The strongest conclusion is therefore that infrastructure can improve access when supporting conditions are present.”
Maren can label that paragraph without changing a word: first sentence = claim; second = evidence; third = reasoning; fourth = qualification; fifth = conclusion. If one part is missing, revision has a target.
The counterargument paragraph
Counterargument writing becomes clearer when students can name four nouns: concession, counterclaim, rebuttal and qualification. A concession acknowledges a valid part of the opposing position. The counterclaim states the opposing case. The rebuttal answers it. The qualification prevents the writer from overcorrecting.
Example: “A legitimate concern is that the programme increases short-term cost. That concession should not be ignored. However, the counterclaim that the programme is therefore financially unsound assumes that only first-year spending matters. The rebuttal is that lower maintenance cost reduces total expenditure over five years. The appropriate qualification is that the financial advantage appears only if the programme remains in use long enough for those savings to accumulate.”
Noun-phrase grammar: why academic nouns can make sentences dense
Academic writing often packs information into noun phrases. Compare “The policy failed because people could not access the service” with “The policy’s failure reflected unequal service access.” The second sentence is shorter, but its noun phrase is denser. Students need to learn when this compression improves clarity and when it creates fog.
A useful noun phrase often contains a head noun plus controlled modifiers: source credibility, measurement validity, long-term policy effectiveness, regional income distribution, student motivation, evidence quality. Each modifier narrows the noun. Problems begin when too many abstract nouns are stacked together without a clear relationship.
Compare “the implementation effectiveness evaluation framework” with “a framework for evaluating implementation effectiveness”. The second version is longer but clearer because the relationships are explicit. Maren uses a readability rule: if the reader must reverse-engineer more than two or three noun-to-noun relationships, unpack the phrase.

Nominalisation: useful compression without turning prose into concrete
Many academic nouns come from verbs or adjectives: evaluate → evaluation, implement → implementation, reliable → reliability, valid → validity, adapt → adaptation, significant → significance. Turning an action or quality into a noun is called nominalisation.
Nominalisation is useful when the concept itself becomes the topic. “We evaluated the programme” focuses on the action. “The evaluation revealed three limitations” makes the evaluation an object that can now be discussed. “The policy was implemented slowly” becomes “Slow implementation reduced effectiveness.” The noun form lets the writer connect complex ideas compactly.
But too much nominalisation makes writing heavy. “The implementation of the regulation resulted in the reduction of participation” is grammatically acceptable but less direct than “Implementing the regulation reduced participation.” Maren chooses the noun form when the concept needs to become a topic, not simply because it sounds formal.
Ten mini case studies: choose the noun that changes the analysis
Case 1: A dramatic headline
A headline says a food “doubles risk”. Iona asks for the source, the baseline rate, the magnitude of the absolute change and the uncertainty around the estimate. Four nouns turn an emotional headline into an evidence problem.
Case 2: A school rule
A school bans phones during lessons. The policy states the direction, the specific regulation defines prohibited use, school leaders hold authority to enforce it, and appeal procedures create accountability. The nouns reveal the institution behind the rule.
Case 3: A weak experiment
An experiment finds higher scores in one group, but the groups began at different levels. The starting difference is a limitation. It creates a threat to validity. Group membership may be a confounding factor. The result is therefore evidence for a relationship, not yet a secure causal conclusion.
Case 4: A transport project
A new station reduces travel time but serves mostly wealthy districts. The project may improve efficiency while raising an equity concern. Its long-term sustainability depends on operating cost, and its effectiveness depends on whether actual access improves.

A prototype works well for twenty users. That shows some effectiveness, but not necessarily feasibility at school scale or resilience under heavy demand. The useful new feature may count as innovation, but novelty alone is not enough.

A student rereads for three hours and feels fluent. Leonie identifies the intended outcome as delayed retrieval, questions the effectiveness of rereading for that outcome, introduces retrieval practice as an intervention, and monitors the error rate. Retrieval diagnostic: can you produce the academic noun from the idea?
Recognition is not enough for writing. A student may understand criterion when reading it and still fail to retrieve the word when trying to express “a standard used for judgement”. The prompts below reverse the normal dictionary direction. Cover the answer, read the meaning, and produce the noun. Mark three outcomes separately: correct and immediate, correct but hesitant, and incorrect. Hesitation matters because timed writing depends on retrieval speed as well as knowledge.

Seven levels of academic-noun mastery
Level 1 — Recognition: the learner recognises the noun in a sentence and has a rough sense of its meaning. This is a starting point, not active mastery.
Level 2 — Definition: the learner can explain the noun in plain language. “A criterion is a standard used for judgement.”
Level 3 — Collocation: the learner can produce natural phrases such as supporting evidence, evaluation criterion, selection bias, causal mechanism or policy implementation.
Level 4 — Discrimination: the learner can separate near-neighbours: evidence versus example, cause versus factor, method versus methodology, validity versus reliability, equity versus equality.
Level 5 — Production: the learner can use the noun naturally in an original sentence where it adds a real conceptual distinction.
Level 6 — Delayed retrieval: the learner can produce the noun from a meaning cue after hours or days, without seeing the word first.

The levels reveal why a student can “know” a word and still fail to use it. Recognition is not retrieval. Definition is not discrimination. Production in a homework sentence is not transfer under time pressure. Diagnose the level that breaks before adding more words.
Teacher use: turn the noun list into a reasoning curriculum
Teach nouns through contrasts. Put evidence beside example, factor beside cause, model beside framework, and equity beside equality. Ask students to choose the noun that fits a scenario and justify why the alternative is weaker. The justification exposes whether the concept boundary is secure.
Use noun labels in writing feedback. Paragraph writing checks integration. Cross-subject scenarios check transfer. A balanced vocabulary assessment should not rely only on multiple-choice recognition.
Parent use: build precision through ordinary conversation
Parents do not need to conduct formal vocabulary lessons. One useful question is, “What kind of thing is that?” If a child says “this thing proves the writer is angry”, ask whether the “thing” is evidence, an example, an inference or an interpretation. If a child says “this caused the result”, ask whether it is truly a cause, merely a factor, or a condition that made the result possible.
When the exact noun is unavailable, let the child paraphrase first. “The rule that tells us how to judge” can be rescued into criterion. “How likely it is” can be rescued into probability. “The way the values are spread” can be rescued into distribution. Paraphrase keeps communication alive while the shorter academic label is being retrieved.
Ask for one contrast rather than five definitions. “What is the difference between evidence and example?” “Why is reliability not validity?” “How is equity different from equality?” These conversations strengthen boundaries and make later retrieval easier.

Are these nouns an official Grade 9 curriculum list?
No single international Grade 9 curriculum uses exactly this list. “Grade 9” here identifies a broadly comparable stage of secondary education and a common search phrase. The nouns were selected for high utility across reading, essays, evidence, research, data, Humanities, Science and general academic reasoning.
Are these supposed to be “advanced” or difficult words?
The priority is usefulness, not rarity. Some nouns such as evidence, source and trend are common because students need them constantly.
